Coimbatore:OnlycollectiveactioncanachievetheMillenniumDevelopmentGoals,saidTamilNaduUNICEFChiefDr.SatishKumar.The
UnitedNationsMillenniumDevelopmentGoalsincludeeradicatingpoverty,universaleducation,improvinghealthcare,sustainingthe
environmentamongothers.
Dr.KumarwasaddressingtheSuperCongress2009ajamboreeofchildrenfromallovertheworld.HehailedtheSuperCongressbeing
heldinthe20thyearoftheUnitedNationsConventionontheRightsoftheChild.
TheSuperCongresswouldbuildsocialmomentumtoachievethesegoals.Thegovernmentalonecannotdoit.Thatswhythereisanurgent
needtointeractwithNGOsandchildrendirectly,forfreshideas,Dr.KumartoldTheHindu.
Hesaidthatprogrammeslikethesewouldmakechildrenawareofwhattheycandolikegivinginformationtohealthdepartmentsabout
issueslikenonavailabilityofsanitation.
NareshGupta,ChiefElectoralOfficerofthestate,echoedtheviewsofDr.Kumar.Herecalledthehistoryoftherightsofchildrenfromthe
1924DeclarationoftheLeagueofNationstotheUNGeneralAssemblyspecialsessionin2002.Mr.Guptareiteratedtherightstosurvival,
health,education,protectionandparticipationofchildren.
PostmasterGeneral(WesternRegion)V.Rajarajanreleasedthreespecialcoversontheoccasion.Thethemeswere:Youngforaunitedworld,
ChildrenlearningtolivetogetherandMahatmaGandhiunitingchildrenoftheworld.Thesecoversalongwithminiaturesheetsfeaturing
threestampsonthefestivalsofIndiawereonsaleatthePhilatelicBureaucounteratthevenue.
B.K.KrishnarajVanavarayar,thechairpersonofthecommitteeofhostswelcomedtheparticipants.Thethemeoftheculturalperformances
wasthegoldenruledountoothers,asyouwouldbedoneby.Thisethicofreciprocityispresentin21oftheworldsfaithsandistheguiding
