Measurement

Measurement is an important part of our daily life. Nearly all elements touching on
the welfare of mankind revolve around precise markings and dimensions. Our
houses, clothes, shoes, and even furniture in our homes are designed using
measurements. You have to know your body size so that you can shop for clothes
that fit you perfectly, and you also need to know the dimensions of your living space
to enable you pick the right furniture for your home. Therefore, measurement is part
and parcel of the innovation process and without it; we cannot manage to do even
the most basic of tasks.
The calculated dimension of any object is referred to as the length, and it is used to
measure distances. For example, the distance from America to the United Kingdom
is approximately 4,200 miles. There are several units used in measuring length.
However, you have to note that America has its own measuring units and applies
miles as the standard measure for length, while the international system of units
uses the meter as the basic unit of length, which is then broken down into the
commonly used measurement units of inches, centimeters, and millimeters.

The History of Inches and CM Scales

Historically, an inch was the width of an adults thumb, and was applied as the
imperial measure of length. This unit of measurement has been used since the
medieval times and it traces its history back to 1324 following King Edward II decree
that equated an inch to the total length of 3 barley corns placed end-to-end. During
that time, to measure an inch, you had to place 3 barley corns end-to-end as
decreed by the King, as this was used as the standard measure of length.
However, today, the measurement procedure has been improved in terms of
accuracy and now the legal measure of an inch is equal to exactly 2.54 centimeters.
Simply put, 2.54 centimeters of length is equal to 1 inch.

Converting measurements into different units

In order for you to record measurements accurately, it is important that you
understand how to convert and represent measurements into different units.
For example, given that the distance from America to the UK is represented as
4,200 miles, this measurement can be represented in other units of measurements
such as kilometers, meter, inches or centimeters. It is not a complex process as it
sounds. In fact, it is quite easy because the standard unit of measurement is always
constant. That is to say, if 1 inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters, there will always be
2.54 centimeters for every inch computed in a meter, a kilometer, or even a mile.
However, to be able to do this, you need to understand the values for each basic
unit and how they equate with other standard units. For example, you need to know

how many inches there are in one meter, how many meters make a kilometer, and
so forth, and this basically requires a bit of mathematical skills.

Converting inches into centimeters

As mentioned earlier, the standard unit of measurement is always constant.
Therefore, for every 1 inch of measurement, there will be 2.54 centimeters
measured in the same distance. This concept is not hard to grasp. Here is how to
convert inches into centimeters
If 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters,
Then 2 inches = (2 inches multiplied by 2.54 centimeters) then divide the result by
1 inch,
Giving you a total of 5.08 centimeters
This means that 2 inches converts to 5.08 centimeters

Converting centimeters into inches

A similar approach is used when converting centimeters into inches. The following
computation highlights it clearly.

The formula for this is

centimeters =(
result by 2.54 centimeters

x multiplied by 1 inch) then divide the

For example, if you want to know how many inches there are in 25 centimeters, you
apply the formula as follows:
If 2.54 centimeters = 1 inch
Then 25 centimeters = (25 centimeters multiplied by 1 inch), then divide the result
by the standard measure, which is 2.54 centimeters
Giving you a total of 9.84 inches
This means 25 centimeters converts to 9.84 inches
Basically, it boils down to understanding the standard measure of each unit against
other units of measure and applying the right formula to calculate the exact value.
This way, you will be able to express any distance using different units of measure
correctly.
