Purpose
This manual describes how to create a master inspection characteristic.
Scope
This manual describes the creating a master inspection characteristic only. However, the same
is applicable for creating an inspection characteristic in an inspection plan or routing. The
other basic data assigned to a master inspection characteristic are separately explained. Also
creating a version for a characteristic is separately explained.
Overview
Master inspection characteristic describes what has to be inspected for a material.
These are QM basic data at Plant level.
These inspection characteristics are assigned to inspection plan and routings. The inspection
characteristic can be either a qualitative characteristic (ok/not ok type) or quantitative
characteristic (upper tolerance/target value/lower tolerance type).
The control indicators of these inspection characteristic controls various QM transactions like
result recording control charts, sampling procedure etc.
Event
Whenever you create an inspection plan or modify a routing for inspection, if there is a
requirement for new parameter to be measured, you have to create a new characteristic.

Enter a preset indicator based on which the control indicators for
qualitative/quantitative characteristic are activated. If these preset indicators
are not sufficient, then do as follows:
Choose this if you want to create a quantitative characteristic. Press enter and
choose the indicators required.
Choose this if you want to create a qualitative characteristic (you can not choose
both Quantitative and Qualitative indicators at atime) . Press enter and choose the
indicators required.
Enter a status like not released, released, etc..
Enter a description of the characteristic.
Enter a word based on which you can search this characteristic later.
Enter a weighting for the characteristic like critical, major, minor etc.
Enter the required qualification of the inspector
Enter a code for share calculation procedure. You can fill this field only if you have
pressed enter after choosing the preset indicator or filled the control indicators
manually .In short, the system will allow you to fill a code in this field only after
you have confirmed either as a qualitative or as a quantitative characteristic.

These control indicators in the above screens play an important role in result recording transaction. So be clear before
choosing an indicator. The need to choose the control indicators arises only when the preset indicators are not
sufficient.
However to do this assignment, the inspection method should be existing. Refer Inspection Method Manual.
Press Enter to return to the previous screen.
Press Save.
Now the system gives a number to your inspection characteristic.
