Description
A decorative ceiling-mounted light
fixture. Chandeliers are often
ornate, and normally use lamps.
Crystal chandeliers have more or
less complex arrays of crystal
prisms to illuminate a room with
refracted light. Chandeliers are
often located in hallways, living
rooms, and recently in bathrooms.
Chandeliers are a great source of
general illumination, and the use
of a dimmer switch (look for the
special controls needed for nonincandescent bulbs) can create
just the mood and atmosphere
you are looking for whether it's
a gentle cascade of light over a
romantic dinner party or a bright
and lively glow for a family dinner.

Application
A chandelier can add a striking
visual effect to unexpected
spaces and can serve as the
main source of light in any
room. From the dining room
to the entry foyer, chandeliers
can create a grand welcome
or an intimate atmosphere.
Many chandeliers are also
designed with a downlight so
they also work great as task
lighting for activities such as
doing homework or paying
bills at the table.
Chandeliers are available in a
wide variety of styles that
includes, round, rectangular, li
near, multi-tier and much
more from simple modern
chandeliers to more ornate
traditional chandeliers.

Shades - Pendant light
shades come in glass,
fabric and metal.
Finishes - Pendant lights
come in a variety finishes.
Take a cue from the
existing finishes in your
home. If the door handles
and cabinet hardware are
all in brushed nickel,
choose lighting fixtures in
a complementary finish.

A pendant light, sometimes called

a drop or suspender is a lone light
fixture that hangs from the ceiling
usually suspended by a cord,
chain, or metal rod. Many modern
pendants are energy-saving low
voltage models and some use
halogen or fluorescent bulbs.
Fabric pendant lights give off a
softer glow, because of the
diffused light through the fabric
shades. Use fabric pendant lights
over dining room tables and
kitchen islands where you want a
softer glow for eating and
entertaining. Glass shade
pendants utilize glass or acrylic to
maximize the light output and
emit a concentrated light, for
specific tasks, like at a desk or
work surface.
Pendant lights offer the versatility
of being able to see clearly what is
at hand for safety and clarity of
the task. In areas where ambiance
is wanted along with task lighting,
add a dimmer onto your pendant
lights for versatility of controlling
the light output.

Pendant lights are often used

in multiples, hung in a straight
line over kitchen countertops
and dinette sets or sometimes
in bathrooms.
A pendant can enhance the
decorative style of a room.
Pendants can provide ambient
or task lighting.
Since pendant lights are
typically smaller and placed in
sets, it is important to follow
general lighting rules to avoid
creating poor lighting. An odd
number of pendants are
preferable to an even amount.
Typically, 60-75 watt
equivalent lights are needed
for every 20 inches of counter
space. Regarding height,
pendants should be placed
high enough to allow an
unobstructed view while
either sitting or standing.
Pendants should be placed 2838 inches above a counter top,
or 72 inches above the floor.

A sconce is a type of light fixture

affixed to a wall in such a way that
it uses only the wall for support,
and the light is usually directed
upwards, but not always. It does
not have a base on the ground.
For this reason, lighting fixtures
will need an electrical box to be
installed. The word applies both to
traditional forms of torch, candle
or gas lighting, but also to modern
electric light sources affixed in the
same way. Modern fittings are
more often called wall lights or
similar terms, especially if the light
source is wholly covered by glass.
Surface-mounted to the wall,
sconces can direct light upwards
or downwards, and their covers or
shades can add a stylistic touch to
a room.

Wall sconces provide ambient

or task lighting.
Chan C Bros Inc
Modern electric light fixture
sconces are often used in
hallways or corridors to
provide both lighting and a
point of interest in a long
passage. Sconce height in a
passageway is generally 3/4 of
the distance up the wall as
measured from the floor to
the ceiling, and the distance
between sconces on the wall
is generally equal to the
distance of the sconces from
the floor, often alternating
sides of the passageway.
Sconces are typically installed
in pairs or other multiple units
to provide balance. They can
be used to frame doorways or
line a hallway. Swing arm
sconces are often placed next
to a bed to provide task
lighting for reading.

Linear Track Lights

Shades - Many track

heads, such as linear track
heads, are metal and
designed to match the
track rail. Flexible and
fixed track lights are more
decorative
and
are
available in glass shades.

Mounted or suspended from the

ceiling, track lighting consists of a
linear housing containing several
heads that can be positioned
anywhere along a track; the
direction of the heads is
adjustable also.
Track lighting is a method of
lighting where light fixtures are
attached
anywhere
on
a
continuous track device which
contains electrical conductors.
This is as opposed to the routing
of electrical wiring to individual
light positions. Tracks can be
mounted to ceilings or walls,
lengthwise down beams, or
crosswise across rafters or joists.
They can also be hung with rods
from especially high places like
vaulted ceilings.
Track light systems range from
three lights to six lights.

Track lighting is often used for

task or accent lighting.
Typical systems have line
voltage running through a
recessed track. The track may
have more than one live
conductor, so that multiple
switched circuits can be used
to control different fittings on
the same track. This is
selected by placing the tab of
the connector on the fixture
to one side or the other when
attaching it to the track.
There are three standard
types of tracks. They are often
termed "H", "J", and "L" track,
after the names of the
manufacturers
that
established the standards,
Halo, Juno, and Lightolier. To
identify a track fixture, you
may use the following two
rules:
1. If it has three contacts, it is
probably "H" type.
2. If the contact-tips are 1 inch
apart, it is probably "J" type, if
they are 7/8 inch apart, it is
probably "L" type.

Under-cabinet
lighting
Types
1. Incandescent easily found;
inexpensive to buy
and are easy to
replace
2. Fluorescent - have
good light color,
turn on instantly,
and do not flicker.
They have high
efficacy, long life,
and bright,
uniform lighting
3. LED - can last
longer than 10
years and do not
typically burn out.
Styles
1. Puck lights - round
or oval and are
good for cabinet
and display
lighting.
2. Linear lights - can
come as a light
strip or as a linear
fixture or light bar.

Under-cabinet lighting is typically

added under a cabinet, shelf, or
similar surface in order to produce
localized lighting on a work
surface. Under-cabinet lighting
can also double as a night light.
Illumination on the backsplash
creates a bright surface that
enhances the appearance of the
kitchen. In some instances, under
cabinet lighting also doubles as a
night light, especially if the light is
dimmable or if the fixture has a
low light level for this purpose.
Under kitchen cabinet lighting can
also be a nice accent to your
decorating scheme.
Regardless of the lighting scheme
you choose, under-cabinet lights
come with three installation
choices: plug-in, battery and
hardwire. Plug-in lights and
battery-operated lights are DIYfriendly for easy installation and
instant gratification. Hardwire
lights require a skilled electrician.

Under -cabinet lighting is

often added to kitchen and
pantry cabinets to provide
task
lighting
on
the
countertops
that
is
complementary to the general
lighting of the room. The
underside of cabinets provides
an ideal location for task
lighting because the light
source is near the task and can
be easily concealed to avoid
glare.
Under-cabinet lighting also
can reduce shadows cast by
the cabinets from the
overhead lighting.
However, they are not just for
kitchen countertop lighting.
The
bright,
focused
illumination from an under
cabinet light's slim profile is
also ideal for offices, work
stations in hospitals or
doctor's offices, bookcases,
shelving, and more. Basically,
it excels as an application in
any area where you need task
lighting and want the look to
be contemporary and subtle.

Emergency
Lighting
1. Exit Signs - usually
positioned above
the nearest exits
in the building.
2. Egress Pathways floor-mounted
lighting that glows
in the dark to
provide an escape
route for
individuals during
a blackout.
3. Standby Lighting Temporary
lighting that
would allow for
activities to be
maintained in the
dark.

An emergency light is a batterybacked lighting device that

switches on automatically when a
building experiences a power
outage. Emergency lights are
standard in new commercial and
high
occupancy
residential
buildings,
such
as
college
dormitories. Most building codes
require that they be installed in
older buildings as well.
By the nature of the device, an
emergency light is designed to
come on when the power goes
out. Every model, therefore,
requires some sort of a battery or
generator system that could
provide electricity to the lights
during a blackout.
The modern emergency floodlight
provides a high-lumen, widecoverage light that can illuminate
an area quite well. Some lights are
halogen, and provide a light
source and intensity similar to that
of an automobile headlight.

Modern emergency lighting is

installed in virtually every
commercial and high
occupancy residential
building. The lights consist of
one or more incandescent
bulbs or one or more clusters
of high-intensity light-emitting
diodes (LED.
This can either be in the form
of a plastic cover over the
fixture, or a reflector placed
behind the light source.
Most individual light sources
can be rotated and aimed for
where light is needed most in
an emergency, such as toward
fire exits.
Emergency lights are used in
commercial buildings as a
safety precaution to power
outages, so that people will be
able to find their way out of a
building. Exit signs are often
used in conjunction with
emergency lighting.

High-Bay and
Low- Bay
Lighting

High bays are designed to be used

in very high areas (approximately
8m and greater) to provide well
distributed and uniform light for
open areas. The key element of
the fitting which will help
guarantee the correct light output
is the reflectors and optics used by
the
fitting.
A
particular
consideration for use with a high
bay is if it can light vertical
surfaces as well as it can
illuminate the floor, or working
plane. Lighting of verticals is
particularly
important
when
dealing with warehouses where
items are required to be picked
from a shelf. High Technology
lightings preferred high bay
solution is the Insignia INV.
Low bays work in much the same
way as a high bay, but will be best
suited to lower mounting heights.
The main differences will be in the
lamp types selected and the types
of reflectors and optics used. An
example of a low bay fitting is the
Insignia INM

Typically, a low bay light is

used where the ceiling height
is between 15 and 25 feet.
High bay lights are used with
ceiling heights of 20 to 40 feet
. The illumination of light will
differ between high bays and
low bays and it is always
important to choose the right
one.
Most notably, a low bay light
usually features some type of
diffuser on the bottom of the
light to spread the light in a
manner reflective of the lower
ceiling height. High bay lights
typically have an aluminum
reflector which allows a beam
of light to reflect downwards
to the floor area. Other types
of high bay lights have a
prismatic reflector which
illuminates shelving, etc. from
the floor to the ceiling.
Whether you are using low
bay lights or high bay lights,
metal halide type lighting
overwhelming allows users to
illuminate large areas with
very few lights, making it the
energy savings choice for
buildings of all sizes.

Desk, Floor and

Table Lamps

Made in a wide range of sizes and

styles, lamps are extremely
versatile and portable sources of
light in a room. Most lamps direct
light
downward,
with
the
exception of a torchiere, which is
a floor lamp that directs its light
upward.
Lamps are an opportunity to add
something extra to a space
whether it's shine, color, art or
abstraction.
Table and floor lamps, which
typically fall under the task
lighting category, are especially
important because they play both
a functional and decorative role in
your home. Size, shape and style
all need to be taken into account
when selecting lamps to suit both
your lighting needs and taste in
home decor.

Lamps are often used as task

lights, particularly for reading,
but can also provide ambient
light.
These lamps come in many
shapes and styles. Lamps
should fit with the style of
your room and existing
furniture.
Select a strong, good quality
floor lamp and you will keep it
for life. Get the scale right. If
your furniture is over sized,
dont choose thin, spindly
floor lamps, theyll be
swallowed up. Neutral spaces
can use warm, wooden lamps
to make them feel cozy.
Rooms feel more layered and
interesting with a few
mismatched lamps in different
colors. As long as your floor,
desk or table lamp is tied to
the overall color scheme, it
should also have a distinct
purpose.

Downlights

A recessed light or downlight is a

light fixture that is installed into a
hollow opening in a ceiling. When
installed it appears to have light
shining from a hole in the ceiling,
concentrating the light in a
downward direction as a broad
floodlight or narrow spotlight.
There are three parts to a
recessed lighting fixture: housing,
trim and bulb. The trim is the
visible portion of the light. It is the
insert that is seen when looking
up into the fixture, and also
includes the thin lining around the
edge of the light. The housing is
the fixture itself that is installed
inside the ceiling and contains the
lamp holder. There are many
different types of bulbs that can
be inserted into recessed lighting
fixtures, with the amount of heat
generated by the bulb being a
unique consideration.

Recessed lighting offers the

advantages of being a hidden
light source and energy
efficiency.
The housings come in various
sizes based on the diameter of
the circular opening where the
lamp is installed. The most
commonly used sizes are 4, 5
and 6 inches in diameter, with
4 inch IC New Construction
units less readily available at
present. Smaller housings (2
and 3 inch) are also available
for specialized uses.
There are two types of bulbs
for recessed lighting:
directional and diffuse.
Directional lamps (R,
BR, PAR, and MR)
contain reflectors that direct
and control the light. Diffuse
lamps (A, S, PS, G) control light
distribution through their
omnidirectional light.

Fluorescent
Lamp

A fluorescent lamp or a
fluorescent tube is a low
pressure mercury-vapor
gas-discharge lamp that
uses
fluorescence
to
produce visible light. A
fluorescent lamp converts
electrical energy into
useful light much more
efficiently
than
incandescent lamps. The
typical luminous efficacy
of fluorescent lighting
systems is 50100 lumens
per watt, several times
the
efficacy
of
incandescent bulbs with
comparable light output,
but less than that of a
typical LED bulb.
Fluorescent lamp fixtures
are more costly than
incandescent
lamps
because they require a
ballast to regulate the
current through the lamp,
but the lower energy cost
typically offsets the higher
initial cost.

T4 fluorescent tubes are compact and

easy to install, making them the ideal
way to light-up kitchen counters and
worktops.
T5 fluorescent tubes are cost effective
way of lighting large spaces because
they typically last up to 20,000 hours
and have low mercury content,
ensuring that they have a minimal
environmental impact.
T8 fluorescent lights are some of the
most widely used. Theyre also
extremely energy efficient, lasting up
to 15,000 hours, and even longer in
some cases. They require minimal
maintenance and come in a choice of
straight and U-shaped designs.

A swiveling spout means that despite the

large design users will still have access and
full control of their sink whenever they
need it. Rubber nozzles on the head
prevent hard water build up and allows
the unit to easily cleaned and maintained
over the years.
It still uses a single lever, but the lever
simply goes up and down, with the further
down it going making the water hotter.
The design is so perfect and simple that
users will wonder how they have been
operating without it up to this point.

Requirements for installation is a

single hole of 1.375 inches with a
supported maximum deck thickness of
1.75 inches.

Single basin sinks are usually available in

compact sizes, making them ideal for
situations where space is at a premium.
And the basin of a single bowl sink is
obviously going to be bigger than a double
bowl sink designed to fit into the same
space. A larger basin can make cleaning
large dishes such as pots, oven trays, and
slow cooker crocks much easier.
The majority of modern kitchen sinks
feature two bowls. In most cases, a double
basin arrangement is idea because of the
flexibility it affords the user. However, if
you do a lot of cooking that involves larger
dishes, youll need to make sure that the
basins of your sink are big enough to
comfortable wash them.

Cleaning a single bowl kitchen sink is

going a be a bit faster due to reduced
amount of corners and edges, and
single bowl models are typically
cheaper than equivalent two or three
bowl varieties.

The spray head itself feels comfortable

in hands of all sizes, while the braided
hose keeps traveling water whisper
quiet while contouring to your specific
needs.

Double bowl sinks come in a wide

array of configurations two equallysized bowls of the same depth, two
equal bowls of different depths,
unequal size bowls, etc. The right
setup for you will depend on what you
do in your kitchen, so take some time
to consider your options before
making a purchase.

Farmhouse kitchen sinks (also known as

apron sinks) are often the choice of folks
looking a traditional or country-style
design, although there are a number of
stainless steel and composite models
available that are designed with an eye
towards the modern kitchen.
Providing a clean, modern look, this
feature makes for less work when cleaning
because debris can be wiped straight into
the sink. Unlike a top mount sink,
undermount models dont have grooves
and crevices where food can accumulate.

Farmhouse sinks are available in single

and double basin varieties, although
single bowl sinks are the most
common.
The defining characteristic of a
farmhouse sink is a large forwardfacing section that replaces a section
of the counter.
An undermount sink is mounted
underneath the counter. There is no
lip or rim, which means that the edge
of counter drops off directly into the
sink basin.

Top mount sinksalso known as drop-in

sinksare relatively easy and inexpensive
to install. The lip of the sink reduces the
need for an internal support system under
the counter, making this type of sink a
good choice for do-it-yourselfers or people
on a budget.

This style of kitchen sink is designed to

be dropped into a hole in your counter
top. Top mount kitchen sinks almost
always have a rim or lip that hold the
sink in place and creates a finished
look.

The most popular type of cabinet

hardware is
the knob. Decorative or simple in style, a
cabinet
knob is attached to a cabinet door or
drawer with a single screw.
Commonly referred to as cabinet handles
or drawer pulls, a cabinet pull serves the
same function as a knob but is larger. They
are typically attached to a cabinet or

Knobs come in various materials such

as brass, stainless steel, glass, stone,
zinc, and even ceramic. The most
common size is 1-1/4 inches in
diameter.
Similar to cabinet knobs, pulls are
available in a variety of finishes such
as oil rubbed bronze, antique copper,
iron, polished chrome and nickel. The

most popular sizes are 3 to 4 inches in

length.

Granite's beautiful mottling and the host

of colors and patterns found in nature
make each piece one of a kind. It stands
up well to splashes, knife nicks, heat and
other wear and tear.
Made primarily from acrylic and polyester,
solid surfacing first was sold under the
brand name Corian, which is often
(erroneously) used as a generic term for it.
Today, it's made by a host of
manufacturers and has enjoyed steady
popularity over the years.
Crafted of resin and quartz chips tinted
with color, quartz surfacing (also called
engineered quartz or engineered stone) is
a good compromise between the beauty
of stone and the easy care of solid
surfacing.
Marble is very susceptible to stains, even
with sealing. For that reason, it's not often
used throughout an entire kitchen most
homeowners limit it to one or two small
areas. It can also scratch and chip.

Like most stone, granite must be

sealed every so often to avoid stains.
And its heaviness means you'll need
very sturdy cabinet boxes to support
the weight.
Because solid surfacing is nonporous,
it's virtually maintenance free no
sealing or special cleaning required.

Modular and inexpensive, ceramic and

porcelain tile offers nearly limitless
options for colors and designs. Tile works
with almost any kitchen style, from
country to majestic Old World.

Quartz surfacing has the same

advantages as solid surfacing with
regard to maintenance. As an
engineered product, it's available in a
far greater range of colors and
patterns than natural stone.
Nothing beats marble for sheer
elegance. It stands up to heat well,
and because it remains perennially
cool, it's a traditional choice for pastry
and baking stations (read: Dough
won't get too soft).
It holds its own against heat and sharp
blades, and resists stains. If one or two
tiles chip or crack, they're fairly easy
to replace.

Stainless Steel
counter tops

Once found mostly in commercial

kitchens, stainless steel has slipped into
vogue within the past two decades. These
countertops are custom made to fit your
kitchen, so you're guaranteed a tailored
look.

There's a reason stainless steel is used

in restaurants and other high-traffic
kitchens: It's nearly indestructible, and
it resists heat and bacteria. It also
provides a very distinctive look that
feels appropriate in contemporary and
industrial-style kitchens.
