ABSTRACT.
The main aim of this research proposal is to establish the impact of drug abuse in Kenya
certificate of secondary education (K.C.S.E) of boys in Yakanek location, Bomet County.
The specific objectives will be, to find out the effects of drug abuse in relation to K.C.S.E
performance of boys, to determine the causes of drug abuse among secondary students, to
investigate the remedies to the problem.

Chapter one
1.0 Introduction:
With the increasing quantity and variety of pharmaceuticals available today in both
developed and developing countries, their potential inappropriate use is a growing concern.
Not only had the health risks associated with the inappropriate drug prescription but also the
economic cost to facilities and patients must be considered. As a result, strategies to identify,
resolve and prevent inappropriate pharmaceutical use have been the topic of numerous
articles, conferences and studies. This chapter then sets out the research agenda through the
following.

1.1 Background of the study.

Since the early 1980s, strategies throughout Africa for sustaining failing
government-sponsored health care systems have included the institution of drug
and user fees. In 1989, in Cameroon, when the budget of the ministry of health
was reduced from 5.2% of the national budget to 4.4 %, drug and user fees were
implemented to recover recurrent costs in public health care facilities. In addition,
public health facilities were to be responsible for the purchase, provision and
management of their own pharmaceutical supply. Given the environment in which
pharmaceuticals are prescribed and dispensed or otherwise obtained, the
prescription of medicines is feared to be increasingly inappropriate. One result has
been a perceived decrease in the quality of health care provided in public health
care facilities.
Drug addicts are often seen as morally flawed or lacking in willpower. These
views have shaped societys responses to drug abuse, treating it as moral failing
rather than a health problem. This has led to an emphasis on punishment rather
than preventive and rehabilitative actions.

1.2 Statement of the problem.

In the years, it has been noticed that most students especially boys are becoming drug
addicts and result in poor performance as they graduate their fourth year examinations
of secondary schools. Most of them are influenced by peers in secondary level and
majority are attracted to drug abuse because they view it as version to take those
drugs and substances.
In addition to poor performance, academically, the affected individuals are affected
health wise and may result to ill problems thereafter. This therefore has drawn
concern on how these individuals could be assisted in order to eradicate the behaviour
for the betterment of their lives in future.

1.3 Specific objectives.

To find out the effects of drug abuse in relation to K.C.S.E. performance of boys.
To determine the causes of drug abuse among secondary students.
To investigate the remedies to the research problem

1.4 Research Questions

What are the causes of drug abuse among secondary students?
What are the effects of drug abuse among secondary students?

1.5 Significance of the study.

In any educational institutions, there has been the problem of drug abuse and the
addicted individuals eventually perform poorly in their academics resulting to
deteriorating of production in the society. Therefore the study is a significant
because for an output to be efficient of any product, the input should be grounded
and well catered for and so the manpower is the key here. For instance, in order to
get quality grades in form, a healthy environment contributes a lot leading to
valuable persons in life hence provision of good services towards the economic
growth of the society and the country at large.

1.6 Limitation of the study.

The study might face lots of challenges depending on the method of data
collection for my case, questionnaires which are structured as a quantitative
research will be used. This method at times has limitations as follows:
They are sharply limited by the fact that respondents must be able to read and
respond to the questionnaires.
The standardised answers may frustrate users and may avoid using and responding
to questionnaires.
Low rate of return of the duly filled in questionnaires bias due to no response is
often indeterminate.

1.7 Assumptions of the study.

It is assumed that:
The main causes of drug abuse among students are poverty.
Drug and substance abuse cause poor performance in K.C.S.E. among students.
Drug abuse also leads to depressions and frustration.
