This project is a humble attempt at socio legal research in context of contemporary dalit issue

Rights and goes on to present the solution of the pervading issue rampant in India.
Various findings have been included from authentic sources and an honest attempt has been
made to resolve the detestable issue that has maliced the worlds largest democracy. All mistakes

The research methodology adopted in this project is doctrinal legal research. Primary as well a
secondary sources are referred for data collection, such as, books, legislations, cases or
judgments, reports and newspaper articles along with journals and e-resources. This project
involves non-empirical study.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM AND LIMITATION
The project attempts to bring to light the following problems:
1. Recent atrocities against Dalits in India and their Victimisation
2. Rights of Dalits from national and international perspectives
3. Legal context of the Dalit issue
The project limits itself to the above problems and does not go beyond that to include identity
crisis of Dalits, conversion movement of Dalits and various other aspects of the Dalit issue.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1. How and to what extent have Dalits been victimised in the recent past?
2. What are the rights of Dalits as mentioned in the constitution and what other laws have
been implemented in this direction?
3. How useful are such laws in preventing atrocities and how far are they effective?
4. What are the possible remedies to this Rampant issue?

LITERATURE REVIEW

Most of the material referred to in this project has been taken taken from newspaper articles and
online resources. The journals and books referred are mentioned below:
1. Thorat, Sukhadeo, and Katherine S. Newman, Blocked by Caste: Economic
Discrimination in Modern India.
The book is a vivid and sad description of the plight of Dalits from 2002 to 2010. It gives
authentic statiscal data to support its claim that despite all the chaos and efforts, nothing has been
done since independence for the improvement of condition of Dalits.
2. Gaiha, Raghav, Ganesh Thapa, Katsushi Imai, and Vani S. Kulkarni. 2008. "Has
Anything Changed? Deprivation, Disparity, and Discrimination in Rural India."
Brown Journal of World Affairs
Just like the above book, this article presents an international perspective on how things have
remained at a steadfast since times immemorial.
3. Ninian, Alex. 2008. "Indias Untouchables: The Dalits." Contemporary Review
This journal gives some factual details on how the practice of untouchability has maimed and
crippled the Dalits. More so, the constitution or any other law hasnt been able to bring any
positive change in this regard. Various overwhelming cases and accounts have been cited which
are very unnerving to begin with.
