nnovation is the key to advancement and its all been poured into the
2017 Acura MDX, which represents
next-generation technologies to continue
to drive the SUV as a leader in the industry.
Upping the performance pedigree of
the MDX with bold styling, our exclusive
Sport Hybrid powertrain and the standard application of AcuraWatch technologies that many in the industry refer to as
semi-autonomous, represents a major injection of Acuras Precision Crafted Performance DNA, said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda

rugged capabilities

In other words, this is a vehicle that can

fit all needs while still being sporty enough
to look good zipping about town or filled
with fly-fishing buddies heading to the
nearest river. Just as importantly, with 3.5-liter direct-injected i-VTEC 24-valve V-6
engine, the Acura MDX has the power the
navigate city streets and interstates, while
also being rugged enough to climb a mountain or ford a stream.

The engine boasts 290-peak horsepower and 267 pound-per-feet peak torque
through a direct-injection system, delivering gas directly into each combustion chamber for robust combustion and efficiency. It
uses a variable pressure control injector operation via a multi-hole injector for a unique
fuel delivery system unlike conventional
port fuel injection designs. This works by
creating the ideal stoichiometric fuel/air
mixture in the cylinders for good emissions
control; meaning there is ample air to completely burn the available fuel, reducing
emissions significantly.
Once the engine is fully warmed up for
maximum power and fuel efficiency, fuel is

Tires

otorists spend hours behind

the wheel and spend lots
of money on maintenance
to ensure their vehicles are in top working order. But tires are one area of maintenance that often goes unchecked, even
by the most diligent automobile owners.
Tires undergo a lot of wear and tear,
which only highlights the importance of
proper tire maintenance. But many drivers
do not give tires a passing thought until

there is a problem, such as a flat or excessive

wear. Also, some drivers think that all tires
are the same, failing to realize that the kind
of tires vehicles need depends on various
factors. In addition to the size and type of
vehicle, drivers should consider the type of
driving they do and the driving conditions
they routinely encounter before choosing
tires for their vehicles.
Many vehicles come off the lot with allseason passenger tires because these tires

are among the most versatile. However, if

you live in a particular climate or do a lot
of driving that requires specific traction or
maneuverability, all-season tires may not be
the best bet. The following are descriptions
of common tire types and the conditions in
which they might make the best fit.

injected during the intake stroke,

helping ignite the stoichiometric
process, which is further helped
by the innovative high-tumble intake port design. This improves
volumetric efficiency, and the cooling effect of the incoming fuel improves anti-knock performance.

impressive gas mileage

Couple that with a frictionreducing crossflow, magnesiumintake manifold, the intake ports,
piston-crown shapes and an elevated 11.5:1 compression ratio
all of which allow the Acura MDX
to regularly bypass fuel stops with
gas mileage of 20 miles per gallon
in the city and 27 on the open road.
The MDX model with optional Super Handling All-Wheel Drive is
rated at 19 miles per gallon in the
city and 26 highway.
Whats more, the Acura MDX
even meets the rigorous ULEV-125
California Air Resources Board
and EPA Tier 3/BIN 125 emissions
standards. This is all accomplished
through Acuras i-VTEC (intelligent Variable Valve Timing and
Lift Electronic Control) system for
the intake valves, which is combined with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) in the MDX.
VCM technology matches the
engine output with the current
needs. For instance, during highpower instances like startup, quick
acceleration situations or climbing hills the 3.5-liter engine that
can create up 6,200 revolutions
per minute kicks in all six cylinders. When cruising and at low or
moderate engine loads, the system
throttles back to the front bank of

three cylinders.
Based on the operating conditions, the direct-injection system
alters its function for best performance. Upon cold engine startup,
fuel is injected into the cylinders
on the compression stroke. This
creates a weak stratified charge
effect that improves engine startup and reduces exhaust emissions before a normal operating
temperature is reached.

designed for
comfortable ride

Riding in the Acura MDX is unlike standard SUVs due to the comfortable and smooth ride. This is no
accident as it was designed with
that comfort at the forefront, both
in the engine and its housing. The
60-degree, V-angle engine is compact and die-cast with lightweight
aluminum alloy block and cast-inplace iron cylinder liners. Its made
with a centrifugal, spin-casting
process and the thin-wall liners are
still ultra strong, with low porosity.
The block uses a deep-skirt design
with four bolts per bearing cap for
rigid crankshaft support, reduced
noise and vibration through the
steel, high-strength, low-weight

crankshaft.
An engineering marvel, the
engine cylinders are surrounded
by a cooling-control spacer positioned in the water jacket, helping control warm-up and operating cylinder liner temperatures,
reducing friction. This two-stage
machining mechanism uses two
grinding processes instead of the
more conventional single-stage
honing process, which further reduces long-term wear.

Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) is one

of Acuras enticing options and
progressively distributes optimum torque not only between
the front and rear axles, but also
between the left and right rear
wheels. Complemented by the
Agile Handling Assist anti-lock
brake system, it will individually brake either the left or right
front wheel to reduce yaw delay,
improving balance and handling
ability through turns.

improved drivability
and optimized engine
response

fresh look with

premium connectivity

The Acura MDX also introduces the Drive-by-Wire Throttle system, replacing the conventional
throttle cable with smart electronics connecting the accelerator
pedal to a throttle valve inside
the throttle body. This generates
a more dynamic and clean underhood situation and less weight,
while boosting the throttle actuation. The byproduct is a programmed gain rate between the
throttle pedal and engine offers
for improved drivability and optimized engine response.
The Super Handling All-

the acura mdx has the power

the navigate city streets and
interstates, while also being
rugged enough to climb a
mountain or ford a stream.

The Acura MDX also features a fresh, modern look with

a diamond pentagon grille incorporated into a sculpted hood
with aerodynamic front fenders. LED fog lights and restyled
Jewel Eye headlights are part
of a full complement of bright,
efficient LED lighting which
enhances the overall look of the
SUV. Inside is no different as the
Acura MDX offers a plush look
and feel that cradles riders in
comfort and safety.
Whats more, the latest in connectivity is available with cloudbased AcuraLink system. This
delivers audio and information
components that run both off the
embedded system as well as a
smart phone. Were raising the
Acura MDXs game for 2017 with
premium new features and technologies that luxury SUV buyers want, said Jon Ikeda, vice
president and general manager,
Acura Division, complemented
by bold, new styling we know
theyre going to love.

lack of focus can even

river
distractions
have grown over the
previous decade. In
addition to cell phones, in-vehicle entertainment systems have
grown more popular. The threat
posed by drivers using their cell
phones while behind the wheel
has been widely documented,
but drivers also can lose focus
on the road when music is blaring or passengers are watching
DVDs in their vehicles. Lack of
focus can even occur when drivers are alone in their vehicles and
their minds begin to wander. The
following are a handful of ways
drivers can maintain their focus

on the road and reduce their risk

of being in an accident.

take different routes

Familiarity with certain roadways, such as the route you might

drive to the office, can lead to a
lack of focus. While its good to be
familiar with roads to reduce surprises, taking the same route every
day can make it easy for your mind
to wander. Losing focus or taking
your eyes off the road, even if for
just a moment, can cause an accident. If possible, spice up your
daily driving routine by taking different routes every so often.

can be dependable tires and offer light

snow traction as well. All-season tires
provide adequate protection in many
conditions, but do not offer specific
benefits in any one area.
Theyre likely to be satisfactory for a
vast array of drivers. All-season tires are
typically offered in touring and passenger types. Touring will provide lower
road noise and better handling, while
passenger varieties offer a smooth ride
and longevity.

summer tires

Summer tires are designed to offer

traction and maneuverability in warm
weather. Orbital grooves and complex
treads maximize traction in hot, humid
weather. If you live in an area where the
temperature is consistently steamy, summer tires may be a good investment.

Safe driving

winter tires

For many people who live where

conditions often include snow, ice and
cold weather winter tires can be lifesavers. These tires are designed using
several different types of rubber, and
feature tread designs that maximize
traction during inclement conditions.

drivers should stay up to date on

acceptable practices for everyone s safety

riving today is different

than it might have been
when many motorists first
earned their drivers licenses. As a result,
safe driving techniques have changed.
Learning these changes and adjusting
driving habits can keep motorists and
their passengers safe.

watch the clock

Older guidelines indicated keeping

hands on the steering wheel at the positions of 10 and 2 if you were imagining it
as a clock. New information indicates this
can be dangerous to the arms and hands
should the air bag deploy in a crash. The
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and AAA now say you should grip
the wheel at the 9 and 3 positions, which
safely allows drivers to maintain control
of their vehicles.

change your turns

Air bag safety also comes into play when

making turns. Rather than the formerly
taught way of hand-over-hand turning,
drivers should push with one hand and pull
with the other to steer the wheel safely
keeping their hands away from the plastic
casing and the possible release of heat and
pressure from an exploding air bag.

use hazard lights sparingly

Some people are very generous in

their use of hazard lights, turning them
on when double-parking, in bad weather or when they are carrying a heavy
load. Be careful to only use them in the
case of a real hazard. Various states and
areas have specific laws governing the
use of hazard lights, including when
and when not to use them. Hazard lights
may inadvertently put drivers in danger
because they can override turn signals.
Some other drivers have become so ac-

customed to seeing hazard lights that

they may not take them seriously. Esurance suggests checking local laws to determine which situations warrant using
hazard lights.

dont block the fast lane

The far-left lane has long been considered the passing lane. Although some police departments have become more lenient
in allowing drivers to actually stay in the
left lane, its still courteous to use it as infrequently as possible. When you do find
yourself in the left lane, recognize that you
should maintain highway speed or accelerate slightly to get around the car you need
to pass. Driving slowly in the left lane can
compromise your own safety and that of
your passengers and fellow drivers.

anticipate road conditions

There are differences between driving

on rural roads, paved roads and heavily trafficked highways, especially during
inclement weather or when encountering adverse conditions. Theres no magic
speed or technique that is ideal all of the
time. Drivers need to learn to adapt to the
conditions to facilitate safe passage. Keep
in mind that it can be difficult to stop on
gravel, wet roadways or those covered
with leaves.

Winter tires also come in various subcategories. Studdable winter tires provide the extra security of added studs
to enhance traction on ice. Performance
winter tires offer better dry-road handling, but traction on snow and ice may
be compromised.

performance tires

Performance tires offer a sports car

feel. These are meant for drivers who
want to feel the road and increase lowspeed traction. The higher the level of
performance, the increased level of handling and stability at high speeds.

truck tires

Trucks, pickups and SUVs also

have a variety of tire types. There are
off-road varieties, which will offer an
aggressive tread design for off-road
traction and other obstacles. Light
truck tires help provide durability
and traction. Specially designed SUV
tires may be large, but can still offer
comfort-focused applications designed
for on-road driving. Drivers looking
for better performance from their tires
should speak with a tire retailer about
the options available to them.

Gifting

giving the gift of a car

to another person or as a
charitable donation requires
navigating the proper channels
of paperwork and procedure.

gifting/donating
automobiles
tips to help you through the process of changing ownership

espite what the holiday commercials will have you believe,

very few people can afford to wrap
up a brand new car with a big bow, park it in
the driveway and wait for the surprised recipient to ooh and ahh over the gift. While
that type of auto gifting is fairly rare, people
do give cars on a regular basis. Usually it is an
older car that they are donating or giving to a
friend or family member.
There are certain things you need to know
when giving a car away; this includes potential tax-related issues and the proper way to go
about signing over the car to another person,
which could vary depending on where you live.
A trip to the motor vehicle department could
shed some light on where you need to begin.
The first step often begins with a bill of sale.

standard requirements
and taxes

A bill of sale is usually required for any transfer of your car that is not to a direct family member. In some cases, a hand-written sales note
may be adequate. In other cases a more formal
bill of sale is generally needed, which will also
require some other things: a recent appraisal of

the vehicle to determine its value, the original

title of the car, the price you would be asking for
the car that is being waived, an indication of the
mileage and any other requirements dictated by
your state. The same process applies for donating a car to a charity, and a copy of the bill of sale
can be used to deduct the gift properly when it
comes time to file your taxes.
When filling out the bill of sale, expressly indicate that the car is granted as a gift. Keep in
mind that the car buyer, the person to whom
you are donating the vehicle, may still have to
pay sales tax on the car. The sales tax varies by
state or province, or the DMV may exclude the
tax or charge a straight tax based on the Kelly
Blue Book value of the car. While a bill of sale is
usually required, its also likely that, when donating a car to charity, you need to sign the back
of the title and give that title to a representative
of the charity. Again, this is something that is
best verified by the DMV to ensure you are doing it correctly.

assuming payments

Though not a donation or gift, assuming the

payments on another persons car also comes
with some guidelines. Assuming payments of-

ten occurs because the existing owner can no

longer afford the vehicle payments or are looking for a new car and simply want to help out
another person in the process. There are situations where people take over the payments of
a car from another, assuming the lease or loan.
While not a gift in the traditional sense, it is a
way to help a person out who may not be able
to afford a new car in another manner.
Before beginning, the person who will be assuming the payments will need to contact the
financing company to find out if they will agree
to this scenario. A down payment may be necessary. A credit check and verification of a credit
score is usually on the list of things that will
be verified. As with a regular loan, the financing company may require an approval period,
which could take some time. If the recipient is
approved, the existing owner will have to sign
paperwork that transfers the car lien into the recipients name.
Giving the gift of a car to another person or
as a charitable donation requires navigating the
proper channels of paperwork and procedure.
The best resource is to speak to someone who
works at the Department of Motor Vehicles directly to guide you through the process.

What to look for in a teens first car

consider several
factors with teen s
first vehicle

any
parents
contribute
money toward the purchase
of their teenagers first
car. But even those who dont help kids finance the purchase of their first vehicle may
still want to offer some advice as their teens
start to look for the car they will no doubt
remember for the rest of their lives.
Different drivers need different things
out of their vehicles, so a car that might be
perfect for adults will not necessarily be the
best fit for teen drivers without much experience traversing the nations roadways. The
following are a few factors to consider when
helping teens find their first car.

size

Teenagers have little to no experience

behind the wheel, so its best that they not
drive cars that are especially small or large
right away. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), young drivers between the ages of 16
and 17 are significantly overrepresented in
fatal crashes. The NHTSA suggests such
drivers immaturity and inexperience plays
a significant role in that overrepresentation.
So parents likely do not want their
children in the smallest car possible, as

such vehicles may not protect teens as adequately as slightly larger vehicles in the
case of an accident. In addition, very large
cars, such as pickup trucks or SUVs, can
be difficult to control and are best suited
to older drivers who already have years
of driving experience under their belts. A
mid-size sedan is big enough to protect
teens and their passengers in the case of
an accident, and such vehicles are small
enough to handle easily.

passenger capacity

Another factor to consider when shopping for cars for teenagers is passenger capacity. The more seats there are in a car, the
more friends teens can pack into their vehicles. Numerous teenagers in a car at once
can prove distracting to the driver, and that
distraction can pave the way for an auto accident. Steer clear of minivans, SUVs or other vehicles that feature a third row of seats,
as teens may be unable to stay focused on
the road with so many passengers in tow.

under the hood

Few teens would not light up at the

sight of a muscle car awaiting them in the
driveway. But cars that accelerate quickly

and those with substantial horsepower

and high-performance engines may tempt
teens to speed or spark the development
of poor driving habits. Look for a vehicle
with modest acceleration instead of an imported sports car that teens may be too immature and inexperienced to handle.

wear and tear

Teens first cars are often preowned vehicles, and such cars may have significant
wear and tear on some important safety features. Wear and tear may not be a reason to
avoid purchasing a preowned vehicle, but
parents may want to replace the brake pads
and tires on recently purchased preowned
vehicles. Brake pads in strong condition
may prove the difference between avoiding
an accident or getting into one. In addition,
poorly inflated or worn down tires pose a
safety risk to teens and their passengers. If
such features seem to be worn down, replace them before letting teens hit the open
road on their own.
Teens will remember their first cars for
the rest of their lives. Parents can ensure
those memories are positive by finding a
car that teens can handle comfortably and
operate safely.

Like learning to drive on the highway,

learning to drive at various times of
the day is a valuable lesson that kids
should learn with their parents in tow
and not on their own after they have
received their drivers license.

Teaching teens to drive

tips to help teens feel comfortable driving

ew parents look forward

to the day when they must
teach their teenager to
drive a car. Handing over the keys to a
teenager and then riding shotgun as he or
she learns the basics is hardly a recipe for
a stress-free afternoon, but its a part of life
many parents must endure sooner or later,
and its a rite of passage for their children.
While its likely your son or daughter will
not be a great driver from the get-go, there
are ways parents can make the process of
teaching their teen to drive less stressful
and more likely to be a success.

utilize an empty parking lot

Empty parking lots are great places to

teach teens to drive. In an empty parking lot,
teens can practice skills like turning or braking without the risk of running into another
driver. This gives kids the feel of a vehicle
and an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the vehicles controls, including
those for turn signals and headlights. Find
an empty parking lot that is large, such as
one outside a closed grocery store or a nearby school when school is not in session.

find a less-traveled road

to practice on

Once your teen has become familiar

with the vehicle, a good next step is to find
a back road or a road without heavy traffic where he or she can learn more subtle
driving skills that might be difficult to
learn in a parking lot. Coming to a stop,
maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, accelerating and decelerating on
roadways and learning to share the road
with pedestrians and/or cyclists are all
valuable lessons that can be learned on a
back road without heavy traffic.

get them on the freeway

Some skills, including changing lanes

and merging into traffic, are best learned on

the freeway or highway. Teens will eventually take to the highway once they get their
drivers license, so its best to teach them
how to handle using on and off ramps and
learning to yield when entering a highway
so theyre comfortable with such driving
and dont have to teach themselves.

awareness of other drivers

Anticipating other drivers is a lesson

even some veteran adult drivers must
learn, much less teen drivers with little
or no experience driving. When teaching
teenagers to drive, emphasize how difficult it can be to anticipate other drivers
maneuvers and how defensive driving
techniques are designed to help drivers
predict what other drivers will do in order
to protect themselves from drivers who
might be unpredictable.
Teach teens to keep an eye out for drivers routinely switching lanes without signaling and tell them to be mindful of other
drivers when they pull up to a stop sign.
Teens who will become good drivers will
eventually find such techniques are second nature, but initially parents should
instruct them in the ways to anticipate the
behavior of other drivers so the teens can
stay safe on the road.

practice at different
times of the day

Taking teens out to drive at different

times of the day can teach them that road
conditions, even when the weather is nice,
vary depending on the amount of light.
Driving at dusk and dawn, for instance, can
be difficult because glare from the sun can
decrease visibility and headlights might
not provide much help. Like learning to
drive on the highway, learning to drive at
various times of the day is a valuable lesson
that kids should learn with their parents in
tow and not on their own after they have
received their drivers license.

Much like familiarity with a certain

route can lull you into a false sense of
security, so can a familiarity with your
vehicle. Driving the same vehicle every
day has its advantages, but its easy to
become distracted in an automobile you
spend hours driving each week. Switch
cars with your spouse once or a twice a
week if possible. You might find driving
another vehicle every so often is fun, and
a new vehicle might break up the monotony of a daily commute while increasing
your alertness.

Its easy to lose focus on the road if

youre running late and hurrying to get
somewhere on time. When you hurry, your
focus is largely on getting to your destination on time and not on getting to your
destination safely. Giving yourself enough
time to arrive at your destination makes
drivers more alert. If you are running late,
call ahead to your destination before leaving and let them know you will be a few
minutes late. Doing so will calm you down

Travel

While many vehicles have towing

capabilities, not all of those vehicles
are necessarily right for the job.

Tow cargo, vehicles with safety considerations

take heed when
towing during
winter months

or some, travel is on the horizon,

and people from all over are preparing their vehicles for a season of
road trips. In addition to packing the interior cargo areas full of equipment and luggage, many road-trippers also haul gear and
recreational accessories with them. Theres
more to towing than hitching a trailer and
hitting the open road. A number of factors
come into play when towing cargo or another vehicle, including the towing capacity of
the vehicle doing the hauling. The following
are some safety tips for road trippers hitting
the road with trailer in tow.

tow vehicles

While many vehicles have towing capabilities, not all of those vehicles are necessarily
right for the job. Review the towing capacities
of various vehicles depending on the type of
trailer that will be towed. A larger, more powerful vehicle may be necessary if you will be
towing something large and heavy, such as a
boat or a recreational vehicle. You may need
more horsepower to maintain a safe driving
speed when towing especially heavy cargo.

equipment

Different manufacturers offer towing

packages equipped to work in concert with
your vehicle. Towing packages may include
certain types of hitches, batteries, flasher
systems, extended-view side mirrors, and
even special axles and tires. In many areas,
a trailer with a loaded weight of more than
1,500 pounds requires a separate braking system and a breakaway switch located on the
tongue of the trailer that activates the trailer
brakes in the event it separates from the tow
vehicle. Having the right equipment can
mean the difference between safely towing
cargo and getting in an accident.

ability

Having a lot of power and the right

equipment is not enough to safely tow cargo. Recklessness on the road, which includes
driving over the speed limit, is a recipe for
an accident. It typically takes time and some
practice for drivers to grow accustomed to
driving while towing cargo. Driving while
towing cargo requires that drivers maneuver
their vehicles differently than they would

in more typical conditions, and that they

drive at slower speeds while leaving room
for a larger turning radius. In addition, drivers must accommodate for the extra weight
when braking.

vehicle check

Verifying that the trailer hitch is secure is

not the only inspection drivers must conduct
before hitting the open road. The vehicle doing the towing should be serviced, and any
repairs should be made. Check fluid levels,
particularly the transmission fluid. In addition, make sure the water level in the battery
is acceptable and have the motor oil changed
if it is nearing its mileage limit. Its also a
good idea to replace the air filter, examine the
tires for adequate tread and test the brakes.
The size and weight of a trailer, plus the
cargo its towing, must be considered before
embarking on a trip; do your research and
play it safe when towing gear. When the
trip begins, give your vehicle and the hitch
a once-over to double-check that everything
is in working order. This can be done during
service station stops along the trip.

THREE YEARS IN A ROW!

(2014, 2015, 2016)

reacting when met with wildlife crossings

n the summer of 2015, a video

of dozens of cars swerving to
avoid a family of ducks crossing
a busy Minnesota freeway went viral.
While no people or ducks were injured
in that incident, impromptu animal crossings are a potential hazard on roadways.
In the wake of the video, state officials
urged drivers not to stop for animals because of the hazards posed by stopping
suddenly.
Drivers may have mixed feelings on
whether or not to put their lives in jeopardy to save an errant animal, but sometimes there is little time to make a decision.
As more neighborhoods and roadways
infringe on natural habitats, incidents of
animals on the roadways increase. Deer,
moose, elk and smaller animals can wander out onto busy roads and theres no
foolproof way to prevent it.
According to State Farm Insurance,
roughly 1.5 million animal-car accidents
occur each year, resulting in 10,000 injuries,
150 deaths and $2,500 in property damage
on average. Knowing what to do when encountering animals on the road can help
drivers avoid accidents and injuries.

remain in your lane

Experts advise drivers to remain in

their lanes and to attempt to slow down

as quickly as possible when encountering animals on the road. Move slowly
in the direction the animal was coming
from if its safe, as animal instinct is to
dart out in the direction it was going.

Scan the edges of the road to see if animals are present. Dawn and dusk are key
times for animals to be on the move looking for food. Autumn is both hunting and
mating season for deer, and they tend to
travel a lot during this time of year. Also
obey speed limits and take signs warning
of animal crossing hotspots seriously.

do not approach
injured animal

Should you hit an animal, do not exit

the car and approach it. Injured animals
can be dangerous, with pain driving
them to flail, kick or bite. Sharing roadways with animals is tricky. Remaining
alert, slowing down in highly populated
wildlife areas and avoiding swerving can
reduce risk of accident or injury.
These tips should help you stay safe
and decrease danger for yourself and
wildlife on the road.

Maintenance / Winter

Protect your
vehicle from
winter weather

thursday, november 24, 2016

Maintenance / Winter

headlights:

care for your

investment during
colder months

inter can be an
unforgiving season. Freezing temperatures coupled with snow
and ice can take its toll on people who live in climates where
cold weather is a fact of winter life. While winter can test
peoples patience, it also can be
harsh on cars and trucks. Understanding what components
of a vehicle can be compromised
by dropping temperatures and
snowy roads can help drivers
take action to safeguard their
automotive investments.
While the Canadian Automobile Association notes that
winter can wreak havoc on just
about every part of a vehicle,
there are some parts that seem
to bear the brunt of Old Man
Winters abuse. Properly servicing and caring for a car or truck
can help.
Drivers should take their
vehicles for a tuneup and inspection before wintry weather
arrives. A mechanic will examine the car battery and check
antifreeze levels and make sure
that the thermostat, defroster,
brakes and wiper blades are
working effectively. Have the
tires inspected for adequate
tread, which can make navigating roads safer. If the treads are
worn, replace the tires. In addition to visiting their mechanics,
drivers can perform some inspections and fixes themselves.

lights

Check that all of the vehicles

lights are operational so your car
can be easily seen during inclement weather. Exchange your existing windshield washer fluid
with one that will not freeze in
cold conditions. Check the nozzles on the windshield-washer
system routinely and clear out
any blockages of ice or debris.
While addressing windshield
washer fluid, also replace worn
out windshield wiper blades
with ones that can withstand
snow and icy weather.

wax

A new coating of wax can

serve as a shield against road
salt, snow, sleet and rain. Try a
polymer wax to protect the paint.
Whenever possible, rinse off salt
and grime so it does not dry on
the car and gradually wear away
at the paint. Some drivers mistakenly believe that salt stops
being a problem once it dries
simply because moisture is the
active ingredient for a corrosive
reaction. But humidity in the air
is enough to keep the salt eating
away at the cars paint, and that
can contribute to rust. Be sure to
rinse off the undercarriage of the
vehicle as well.

tires

Have your tires alignment

checked toward the end of
winter or early spring. A season of traveling over potholeridden roads or hitting curbs
buried under snow drifts can
affect the alignment. Get everything back on track. Similarly, inspect tires routinely, as
weather changes can affect tire
pressure and strength.
Use a soft snow brush or a
foam brush to clear snow off
of the car. Avoid hard plastic
scrapers you might use on your
windshield, as they can scratch
painted surfaces. Try to park the
vehicle in a garage or under a
carport, each of which can protect cars and trucks from the
often harsh elements of winter.
Vehicles can be affected by the
cold weather. Keep them running efficiently to prevent damage this winter.

maintenance
and
technology

prevent , treat improperly lit headlights

eadlights serve to improve visibility during

nighttime driving conditions and inclement weather. They
help drivers see and be seen by other motorists. When headlights are
dull and cloudy, they can become
a safety hazard on the road. Fortunately, there are ways to restore
headlights to their full effectiveness.
Driving during the day is easier
than driving at night, when vision
is easily compromised. A humans
visual field is much smaller in the
dark, and it can be harder to spot
road hazards, animals or people
when driving at night. An improperly lit driving area can make it
much more difficult to see. It also
impairs others ability to see your
vehicle coming and going. The
National Institute for Traffic and
Highway Safety says the number
one reason for severe nighttime accidents and reduced driving safety
is dim or cloudy and improperly lit
headlights. Also, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has found that
nearly four out of five drivers drive
with improperly lit headlights.

causes of ineffective
headlights

There are a few different reasons

for poor headlight illumination. In
many instances, the headlight lamp
has burned out and the light is no
longer working. Old bulbs may dim
and fail to provide the same level of
illumination as they once did. Oxidized and cloudy headlight coverings are also a known contributor to
diminished headlight function.
Todays headlight lenses are
made from plastic. While it may not
be visible immediately, road debris
and weather conditions can put
small dings and scratches into the
lenses over time. These small damages can add up to covers that look
dingy and dull. Cloudiness also occurs as the result of exposure to ultraviolet light. Although newer cars
have lenses that are supposed to
resist scratching and damage, some
dulling may occur.

owner repair and

maintenance

There are many headlight

cleaning kits on the market that

are quite effective at restoring the

lenses to their original glory. Most
of these kits use a series of buffers
and polishers to gently buff out
scratches and rid the headlights of
oxidation. Because headlight lens
replacement may cost upwards of
$200 per lens, the kits are much
more cost effective.
A car owner can also perform
similar maintenance with just a few
items from the hardware store and
automotive shop. Employ incremental grits of sandpaper to clean
the headlights without causing further damage. In addition, cutting
compounds and surface cleaners
can be applied with electric buffers
to clean the sandpaper grit and any
other debris caught in the headlights. Plastic polishers can further
increase the shine of the headlights
and make them look new.
The key to keeping headlights
looking their best is to be on top of
any damage taking place. Handling
minor cloudiness is much easier
than a complete headlight overhaul. Routinely inspect the headlights and check for damage.

LED lights offer effective, durable

alternative to current technology
mass market auto makers take advantage of luxury tech

t has taken a few years,

but carmakers have mastered the art of integrating
LED headlights into their systems.
From headlights to accent lighting, LEDs are taking over todays
cars. Light-emitting diodes use less
energy, make less heat, last longer
and weigh less providing a triple
threat for both maker and driver.
Luxury models like Audi, Cadillac and Mercedes have used LED
headlamps for years while mass
market makers begin to get onboard.
By 2020, LED headlights will account for 20 percent of headlights
produced globally, according leading lighting supplier Osram.

design purposes

LED headlights are much

smaller than traditional bulbs, so

they allow for more creative car

designs. Many makers use LEDs
to create jewel-like looks for their
lighting structures, redefining
how a light needs to be positioned
and oriented.
Engineers can work around
LED headlights better when forming both the front and back areas of
the car, allowing for more creativity
and sleeker aesthetics.

durability & versatility

They also can last longer and

use much less energy than ordinary bulbs. Osram reports that an
LED headlight uses about 15 watts
compared to 65 from a traditional
halogen bulb.
Many carmakers have started to
incorporate LED lighting into their
headlights, taillights and brake

lights. General Motors has used

LED lighting for daytime running
lights while Ford and Mitsubishi
have utilized them for fog lights.

whats next?

The next evolution in headlight design could be coming

soon from BMW. The German
company has announced it is
working on laser-powered lights
that are even smaller and use less
power than LEDs.
BMW showed off its future lighting capabilities with its M4 Concept
Iconic Lights, showing how the
laser system will be able to project
light up to 650 yards. The lights
will use a fraction of the electricity
of modern headlights and will be
reflected through filters as to not
blind or harm pedestrians.

Cold weather riding tips for bikers

winter changes drivability for motorcycles

he arrival of cooler temperatures means motorcycle

enthusiasts should have a plan
in place for their vehicles. Although fall
sees many riders pack their bikes into
the garage to wait out the winter, many
others see no reason to quit the great
outdoors just because colder weather is
on the way. No matter which path riders
take and when they take it, preparation
is essential when riding motorcycles.
Here are a few pointers for riders to
consider once the leaves have started to
change color.

layer up

Layering clothing is a key component

of riding a motorcycle in colder temperatures. Many people are not very active on
the back of a bike, so they will not generate enough heat on their own. Layering
clothing will take the bite out of frosty
winds and any precipitation that happens to be falling. Layer clothing so that
you will feel comfortable, maybe even
a bit warm when you are just standing
around outdoors. A first layer of thermal
or fleece is a good idea.
Then layer other materials as needed
for comfort. Just do not wear so many
layers that your mobility is compro-

mised. If layers are not keeping you

warm enough, invest in heated clothing.
The outermost layer you wear should be
weather- and wind-resistant. Wind chill
can quickly sap your energy and cut your
ride considerably. Leather clothing will
fit the bill in most cases, but a rain suit or
some other waterproof material also may
be necessary at times.

leaves

Leaves can be a significant hazard to

riders in the fall. Damp leaves can make
a slippery mess of roads, particularly
on turns and curves. Avoid all piles of
leaves, as you do not know what may
be hiding beneath them. Consider wet
leaves as dangerous as black ice, as soggy
leaves can be just as slippery.

salt and sand

Road maintenance crews will use

sand and salt to keep roads clear when
snow and ice forms. Avoid riding on
salty roads because the salt can corrode
chrome and paint. If you choose to do
any winter riding, apply a coat of wax
to all parts of the motorcycle before going for a ride. This will help protect it
and enable any salt to be easily wiped
off after riding.

standing water

If it rains or snows lightly after an

extended period of dryness, oils in the
road can come to the surface, making roads quite slick. In addition, stay
on the lookout for puddles and other
standing water. While motorcycle tires
are good for displacing water, they still
can hydroplane, so stay focused when
riding on wet surfaces.

foraging animals

One potential hazard riders may not

consider is wildlife. Harvested crops reduce easy food sources, so animals may
be on the move looking for food. Deer
can be pushed out of fields by hunters.
A collision with a deer can damage a
car never mind a motorcycle. Always
use caution in rural areas, particularly at
dawn and dusk.

winterizing

If you choose to store your bike when

the weather starts to get cold, remember
to put a fuel stabilizer in the tank, fill the
tank with gas and hook the battery up to
a battery tender. This will ensure the bike
is ready to hit the road when the temperatures warm up.

Some lane-keeping technology works in

conjunction with the on-board cruise control system to help the driver steer and keep
the vehicle on course. These lane-keeping
systems depend on sensors and cameras to
detect cars in the drivers blind spot, monitoring the spots to the left and right rear of
the vehicle the places where its hard for
a driver to see when changing lanes and
will alert you if it senses you might hit a vehicle in the next lane.
In other systems, cameras can recognize
the lines on certain types of roads and help
keep the vehicle within the painted boundaries. Some can even recognize the road structure and control the electronic power steering
based on the cars driving situation.

forward
collision alert

Sometimes you can have an accident

even when youre staying in your lane. One
active safety feature that is rapidly gaining popularity is forward collision alert.
This system uses sensors in the front of the
car to detect when a crash might be imminent, then tries to take steps that will keep
the crash from happening. Some systems
simply alert the driver with bright flashing
lights and an alarm sound, essentially warning the driver to take quick action.
Other systems actually take over the
cars system by priming the brake pedal for
an emergency stop or even trying to stop
the car automatically. Even if the driver isnt
paying attention, this type of system can
help reduce the chances for a dangerous accident, all through the use of technology.

years of age before transitioning to

children and pet

safety in the car
transition a child
to a booster seat

he world health organization

notes that nearly one million
children die each year across the
globe as a result of unintentional accidents.
Car crashes are the leading cause of unintentional accidents, annually causing 260,000
fatalities and around 10 million injuries.
Though invented in 1921, child seats were
rarely used in the ensuing decades. When
child seats were used, their function was
largely one of transportation and not safety.
It wasnt until roughly 40 years later that
child seats became more prevalent and their
focus shifted toward protecting children.
In 1962, Denvers Leonard Rivkin invented
seats aimed at protecting a child. Tennessee
became the first American state to require
their use by law.

confusion about options

Many safety seats on the market today

are designed to keep children safe at different age and weight levels. However, for
many parents this can be misleading, considering the purpose of some seats is to raise
up a child to a height where the child is able
to use the vehicles safety belts in proper
position, as is the case with belt-positioning
booster seats.
A booster seat is designed to sit a child
who is roughly four years old and weighs at
least 40 pounds, though height isnt factored

into the equation. Some children exceed the

weight or height of a convertible or standard five-point-harness seat, but may not be
mature enough or of the age to move into a
booster seat. Parents are often left with questions of how to remedy this situation.
It is important to keep a toddler or preschooler in a forward-facing harnessed seat
as long as possible. Today there are many
safety seat manufacturers that have realized
the health benefits that these seats provide,
including their capacity to prevent injury.
There are seats available that can accommodate children up to 80 or 100 pounds and may
be an option before moving to a booster seat.

options vary depending on

childs demeanor, size

If a child is mature enough, meaning he or

she doesnt try to escape the seat or wriggle
around and slump, the child may be ready
to move into a booster seat. A high-back
booster seat is one that can be used if the car
has low seat backs or no headrests. It helps
to properly align the shoulder strap of a lap/
shoulder strap combination, which may also
prevent slouching. Booster seats may start at
a minimum weight of 30 to 33 pounds.
However, the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration recommends waiting
until the child is 40 pounds and four years
of age before transitioning to a booster seat.

That is unless the child has simply outgrown

the car seat, meaning the straps dont fit
correctly, shoulders are higher than the harnesses, and feet dangle too far over the edge
of the seat.

safety standards

The American Academy of Pediatrics

also says it is best for children to ride in a
seat with a harness as long as possible, at
least to four years of age. If your child outgrows his seat before turning four, consider
using a seat with a harness approved for
higher weights and heights. They also say
that all children whose weight or height
is above the forward-facing limit for their
car safety seat should use a belt-positioning booster seat until the vehicle seat belt
fits properly typically when they have
reached four feet in height and are between
eight and 12 years of age.
In Canada, children under the age of
eight who weigh 18 kg or more but less than
36 kg (40-80 pounds), and who stand less
than 145 cm (57 inches or 4 feet, 9 inches)
must travel in a booster seat that meets the
requirements of Canadian Motor Vehicle
Safety Standards. Understanding safety
seats can be confusing to some parents.
When in doubt, check with a hospital, pediatrician or even a police station for determining the right seat for use.

Strap pets in for safety

protect yourself
and your furry
companion for
safe traveling

ost drivers would not allow a 40-pound unsecured

weight to ricochet around the
interior of their vehicles. Passengers and cargo are typically strapped in for safety. But if
a driver is driving with an unsecured pet in
his or her car, he or she could be putting everyone in the car at risk. The law states that
children and adults should be buckled up
when riding in a car. The same regulations
do not always pertain to pet passengers, although some experts think they should.
According to Christina Selter, the founder of California-based pet advocacy group
Bark Buckle Up, pets can be very dangerous
inside of a vehicle if they are not secured. A
60-pound Golden Retriever can hit you with
2,700 pounds of force in a 35 mile-per-hour
crash. However, thats not the only danger. A
dog or cat that is allowed to roam freely inside a car can pose a distraction to the driver,
potentially impeding a drivers line of vision
or inadvertently bumping into the gear shift.
A small animal could get down into the foot-

well on the drivers side and impede operation of the brakes or accelerator.

a danger to themselves
and passengers

In addition to the passengers and driver

in the car, an unsecured pet poses a danger to itself. A dog or cat that is propelled
through the car in a crash or sudden stop can
risk injury or death. Even simply bumping
noses on the dashboard or a seat can be very
painful to the animal. A belt or tether secures
the animal and prevents it from hanging its
head out of the window, where any small
speck of flying debris can cause a serious injury to the pets eyes or nose. Its important
to keep the pets entire body inside of the
moving vehicle.
A harness will prevent a dog or cat from
physically jumping out of the vehicle. If a
squirrel or other distraction arouses interest
outside, the pet is unable to pursue it. In the
event of an accident, a pet seat belt will keep
the animal contained until emergency work-

ers can assess the situation. A frightened or

injured pet may scratch or bite. Having an
excited animal on the loose can make rescue
dangerous.

ways to secure your pet

When wearing a harness, the pet doesnt

have to work as hard bracing itself while the
car is maneuvering. The harness will keep it
secure. There are many ways to secure pets
in a motor vehicle. An animal crate that is
belted down is one option, and a pet may
be comfortable riding in a familiar crate and
feel more secure as a result.
For smaller dogs or cats, consider a pet
booster seat that straps in with the vehicles
safety belt. Some drivers have used childrens booster seats with a pet harness. Harnesses that work with safety belts are also
available. These can keep the pet in a sitting
or lying-down position. Securing pets in the
car ensures the drivers safety and the safety
of the passengers as well as the health of the
pet going for a ride.
