I collaborated with the ELA department at our weekly
Professional Learning Community meetings to develop a formative
assessment that would accurately assess student understanding at the
end of the first grading period. The point of the assessment was to
assess whether the students grasped and could apply the concepts
that were covered in the first nine weeks curriculum guide developed
by our English Language Arts district department. The assessment
spanned just two passages and eleven questions in order to scaffold
student-testing endurance. All eleven questions were written to be
multiple-choice and in the format they will be encountering on the
state STAAR assessment. We created the exam to assess
approximately 6 ELAR TEKS which were both classified as readiness
and supporting standards. These TEKS were taught exhaustively and
therefore in order to drive instruction we decided to assess student
performance on these TEKS to be able to determine which students
understood and which didnt. We then used the data from the results of
this assessment to drive instruction and regrouped students within our
classes to target the skills they did not show success on.
