Lab 13: Critical Damped Response of Source free

RLC Parallel Circuit
OBJECTIVE:
To find the critically damped response of source free RLC parallel circuit using Pspise.
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

Voltage source
Inductor
Oscilloscope
Different value resistor
Switch
Capacitor

THEORY AND PROCEDURE:

Parallel RLC circuits find many practical applications, notably in communications networks and
filter designs.
Consider the parallel RLC circuit

Applying KCL at the top node gives

By solving these equations we get the following result, the characteristic equation are

A more compact way of expressing the roots is

There are three possible solutions, depending on whether > 0 , = 0, or < 0 . Let us
consider these cases separately
Critically Damped Case ( = 0):
For = , L = 4R2C. The roots are real and equal so that the response is
Vn ( t )=( A 1+ A 2 t ) e t (Critically damped)
PROCEDURE:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

At t<0, inductor is short and capacitor is open circuit to dc.

Then find i(o) and v(0).
At t>o, circuit becomes source free.
Find the roots s1 and s2.
Finally find v(t) for critically damped case across capacitor.
t

V ( t ) = ( A 1+ A 2 t ) e
