Mood

Font cllassifications help categorize fonts based

on look and style. The classifications that you
choose will afftect the readability, style, hierarchy, & contrast of your text. Knowing the classifications can help you choose the right fonts &
font combinations for you.

Contrast helps a reader understand what is

important, and what is not so important, in a
text. Use varying levels of contrast to emphasize the difference between textual elements,
like headings, subheadings, and body text.

Fonts carry with them different moods much

like people do. Some moods are more appropriate for certain situations than others are.
Think about what sort of mood you want your
font choices to convey. What moods do these
fonts convey? Can you classify them?

Serif

Weight

Serif fonts are characterized by the lines

coming off of the letters in a font, like this
one, for example. Serif fonts are usually
more professional, like Times New Roman,
and are suited for print. They also tend to
be more readable in paragraph or body
text.

Serif

Sans-serif

Sans-serif fonts, as their name suggests,

do not have lines coming off of the characters. These fonts tend to be less formal
than serif fonts, and can be used for larger, shorter text like titles or major headings. Some examples are:

Arial, Helvetica, and

Futura.

Script

Script fonts look like handwriting. These

fonts can be difficult to read in body or
paragraph text, but they are typically
used in event invitations, or more informal, personal projects. Some examples
are:

Edwardian Script and Bradley

Hand.

Decorative

Decorative fonts carry with them a lot of

personality and visual appeal. They tend
to be artistic and very unique from one
to the next. Decorative fonts are not very
readable for body text, but could be used
for headings or titles. Some examples are:

variations of a font or
