b) explaining how the issues of states rights and slavery increased
sectional tensions;
c) identifying on a map the states that seceded from the Union and those
that remained in the Union;
e) using maps to explain critical developments in the war, including
major battles;

e) evaluate and discuss issues orally and in writing;
f) analyze and interpret maps to explain relationships among landforms,
water features, climatic characteristics, and historical events;

D: recreate their own map of crucial war events and explain how that map
relates to issues that divided the nation, issues of states rights, and explain
main events of the war.

There are many reasons why the Civil War was fought. Today, we are going to
look at some maps that describe the land at the time and see if we can draw

Civil War
- Crayons/markers
- Map of America
(several for every
student)

conclusions about the reasons for the start of the war. We will also be recreating
our own maps for our own reference.

Detailed Steps
Show the maps to the class. Give them time to discuss with a partner.
What does this map show us?, What did we learn from looking at this map?
Encourage the students to keep their own list of possible reasons for the start of
the war. (this will help with their diary assignment)
The students will them recreate a map. They will explain it to a partner.
Additionally, they must draw conclusions from their own map and use it as a
justification to their partner.

Accommodations and Modifications:
Maps will be displayed both on the computer and in front of the students so they
will not have to work from memory
Map will have the names of the states as to not confuse the students during the
activity
