24-00 - ELECTRICAL POWER - GENERAL

A. Generation
Each of the 4 engines drives an Integrated Drive Generator (IDG) providing alternating current power.
The APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) drives a fifth generator (APU GEN) which can supply all the aircraft network
on ground or replace a main generator in flight.
Two Transformer Rectifiers (TR) utilize the alternating current to supply the main direct current network.
Another transformer rectifier (ESS TR) supplies the essential direct current network.
Two batteries supply also direct current in some configurations. The APU TR or/and a battery (APU BAT)
power supply the APU starter, depending on the aircraft configuration.
In case of major failure, a constant speed hydraulic motor drives an emergency generator: both equipment
form an assembly called Constant Speed Motor/Generator (CSM/G).
The function of the CSM/G is to supply the systems necessary to the aircraft control.
B. General Arrangement of the Distribution Network
(1)
AC distribution network
There are four distribution networks:
networks 1 and 2 associated to left side (side 1) generators (respectively IDG 1 and 2),
networks 3 and 4 associated to right side (side 2) generators (respectively IDG 3 and 4).
In normal flight configuration each IDG supplies its own distribution network via its line contactor (GLC).
The four IDGs are never electrically coupled.
The distribution network 1 consists of:
the alternating current bus 1XP1 (AC BUS 1-1),
the alternating current essential bus 9XP (AC ESS BUS),
the alternating current sheddable essential bus 4XP (AC SHED ESS BUS).
The distribution network 2 consists of:
the alternating current bus 1XP2 (AC BUS 1-2).
The distribution network 3 consists of:
the alternating current bus 2XP3 (AC BUS 2-3).
The distribution network 4 consists of:
the alternating current bus 2XP4 (AC BUS 2-4).
(2)
DC Distribution Network
The TR1 powered from the AC BUS 1-2 supplies through its contactor:
the direct current bus 1PP (DC BUS 1),
the direct current bus 3PP (DC BAT BUS).
The TR2 powered from the AC BUS 2-3 supplies through its contactor:
the direct current bus 2PP (DC BUS 2),
the direct current service bus 6PP (DC SERVICE BUS).
The ESS TR powered from AC BUS 1-1 supplies through its contactor:
the direct current essential bus 4PP (DC ESS BUS),
the direct current sheddable essential bus 8PP (DC SHED ESS BUS).
Two batteries are associated with the DC BAT BUS through their own contactor. They can also supply
the static inverter during particular configurations.
(3)

Particular configurations
The AC ESS BUS and the AC SHED ESS BUS plus, via the ESS TR, the DC ESS BUS and the DC
SHED ESS BUS can be supplied by:
the AC BUS 2-4 in case of loss of the AC BUS 1-1,

A. AC Generation
(1)
Main generator and APU generator drive
(Ref. 24-21-00 and 24-23-00)
The engine HP compressor drives each main generator via the accessory gearbox and via an integrated
hydromechanical speed regulator which transforms the engine variable speed into constant speed for
the generator.
In case of unsuccessful attempt to disconnect the IDG, if the IDG oil inlet temperature reaches 199
deg.C (390.2 deg.F), the IDG is automatically disconnected.
If there is a mechanical failure, the IDG pushbutton switch protected by a guard and located on the
overhead ELEC control panel serves to disconnect the IDG.
Reset of the disconnection mechanism is possible on the ground only with the engine shut down.
The APU directly drives the APU GEN at constant speed. This maintains the generator frequency
constant.
(2)
Main Generator, APU GEN, Generator Control Unit (GCU) and Ground and Auxiliary Power
Control Unit (GAPCU)
(Ref. 24-22-00 and 24-23-00)
The GEN pushbutton switch located on the ELEC control panel on the cockpit overhead panel serves to
control each generator via a GCU (IDG) and the GAPCU (APU GEN).
(a)
Main functions of the GCU (IDG) and the GAPCU (APU GEN)
to control the generator frequency (IDG only),
to control the generator voltage by regulation of the field current,
to protect the network and the generator by control of the associated GLC and the generator field
current,
to provide BITE information to the CMC(s) through the GAPCU,
to control the warnings associated with the corresponding channel,
to provide capability to perform interrupt free power transfer on ground (NBPT).
Each GCU and the GAPCU include a BITE and self monitoring system which:
analyses most of the faults that affect the channel,
memorizes the corresponding data in a non-volatile memory.
NOTE: In addition the SD receives the electrical parameters and warnings dealing with the channel
concerned. The GAPCU is also involved in the AC external power control supply (see para.
C).
(3)

Constant speed motor/generator (CSM/G) and CSM/G control unit

(Ref. AMM D/O 24-24-00-00)
When emergency conditions prevail, a hydraulic motor (CSM) controlled by a servo-valve speed
regulator drives a generator (motor and generator form an assembly called CSM/G).
The regulator transforms the flow of the Green hydraulic system into constant speed for the generator.
In electrical emergency condition following the loss of the four generators, two main hydraulic pumps
driven by engines 1 and 4 supply the Green hydraulic system.
In emergency condition following the loss of all the engines (the engines 1 and 4 + the engines 2 and
3) , the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) pump supplies the Green hydraulic system.
Loss of the AC BUS 1-1, AC BUS 1-2, AC BUS 2-3, and AC BUS 2-4 generates the automatic control of
the CSM/G.

24-00 - ELECTRICAL POWER - GENERAL

The MAN ON guarded pushbutton switch located on the EMER ELEC control panel on the cockpit
overhead panel serves to manually control the CSM/G.
The CSM/G control unit enables full control of the CSM/G.
(4)
Galley Control
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-26-00-00) , (Ref. AMM D/O 24-29-00-00) and (Ref. AMM D/O 24-54-00-00)
The galley assembly is divided in two parts :
the forward/middle area,
the aft area.
The ELMS manages shedding and restoration of the loads related to the galley.
If the ELMU is de-activated , the galley supply control circuit controls the galley RCCBs via the two
ECMUs. The ECMUs manage the automatic opening and closure of the RCCBs galley according to
the aircraft configuration. The galley can be shed completly by pushing the COMMERCIAL pushbutton
switch or the GALLEY pushbutton switch.
(5)
Static inverter
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-28-00-00)
A static inverter transforms the direct current voltage from the batteries into a single phase, 115
VAC/400 Hz, alternating current voltage.
The static inverter is automatically activated only in battery configuration (i.e. AC BUS 1-1, AC BUS 1-2,
AC BUS 2-3, AC BUS 2-4 are not supplied and the CSM/G unavailable).
(6)
Electrical Contactor Management Unit (ECMU)
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-29-00-00)
The system consists of two separate equipment called ECMU1 and ECMU2.
Their functions are similar but the ECMU1 manages only side 1 contactors and ECMU2 manages only
side 2 contactors.
Each ECMU receives the following signals:
orders from the GCUs and the GAPCU,
status of the main AC and DC generation contactors,
voltage of the main AC and DC busbars.
The two main functions of the ECMU are:
(a)
Operational function:
control of the AC/DC main contactors,
control of the galley shedding,
on ground, control of the transfer between the various electrical power sources (IDG, APU, EXT
PWR) in order to avoid any break of power (NBPT),
control of AC/DC ground service busses,
control of Inadvertent Paralleling Trip (IPT).
(b)
BITE function
monitor and test the ECMU together with its peripheral circuits,
collect the failures and store the corresponding fault code in the Non Volatile Memory (NVM),
transmit the failure message to the Central Maintenance Computer(s) (CMC(s)) through an ARINC
429 bus.
In addition, in case of ECMU failure, a fault warning message is generated to the Engine/Warning
Display (EWD).

(7)

Electrical Load Management Unit (ELMU)

(Ref. AMM D/O 24-54-00-00)
The system consists of one equipment called ELMU.
The two main functions of the ELMU are:
(a)

Operational function:
The Electrical Load Management System (ELMS) sheds or restores electrical loads to the
commercial systems. The ELMU monitors the power output from each of the AC generators. When
there is an overload, it sheds electrical loads, in a sequence of priority, and when the available
capacity of the generator is sufficient again, it restores the loads, again in a sequence of priority.

(b)

(8)

BITE function
monitors the condition of the ELMU and associated inputs,
analyses and confirms the faults,
stores the faults in a Non-Volatile Memory (NVM).
Transfer circuit

(Ref. AMM D/O 24-22-00-00)

The Bus Transfer Contactors (BTC)s and the System Isolation Contactor (SIC) are automatically
controlled by the ECMUs. They enable supply of all the aircraft electrical network or half of it.
The supply only depends on the availability of one of the power sources: GENx, APU GEN, EXT PWR x.
The control of the BTCs also depends on the availability of these sources and the correct condition of
each network.
(9)
No Break Power Transfer (NBPT)
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-29-00-00)
This function is managed by the ECMUs. It prevents busbar power interruption due to electrical power
supply source transfer on ground in normal configuration.
The ECMU receives information from the main AC contactors, each GCU and the GAPCU, to perform
this function.
No break power transfer occurrences are permitted between:
any external power and the APU generator,
any IDG and any external power,
any IDG and the APU generator,
any IDG of the same side of the aircraft.
B. AC Distribution
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-50-00-00)
The alternating current distribution network comprises four independent sections.
(1)
Network 1
Network 1 mainly includes the AC BUS 1-1, the AC ESS BUS and the AC SHED ESS BUS which are
three-phase, 115 VAC/400 Hz busses.
The AC BUS 1-1 supplies the essential busses in parallel. The AC ESS BUS also delivers 26 VAC/400
Hz power supply through a 115/26 VAC transformer.

In the event of AC BUS 1-1 loss, the AC ESS BUS and AC SHED ESS BUS are automatically restored
by the direct transfer of power supply from the AC BUS 2-4.
In case of loss of the AC essential busses, FAULT legend on the AC ESS FEED pushbutton switch
comes on : this P/BSW enables to transfer the AC essential busses supply from AC BUS 1-1 to AC BUS
2-4, in particular when the loss of the AC essential busses normal supply does not result from AC BUS
1-1 loss.
If there is loss of AC BUS 1-1, AC BUS 1-2, AC BUS 2-3 and AC BUS 2-4 (emergency configuration),
the AC ESS BUS and AC SHED ESS BUS are restored via the CSM/G driven by the Green hydraulic
power. In case of RAT operation, the AC SHED ESS BUS is automatically shed.
(2)
Network 2
Network 2 comprises the AC BUS 1-2 which is a three-phase, 115 VAC/400 Hz bus.

24-00 - ELECTRICAL POWER - GENERAL

(1)

DC power sources
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-30-00-00)
The power sources for the direct current are:
three identical Transformer Rectifiers (TR1, TR2 and ESS TR) and two identical batteries (BAT1 and
BAT2),
In normal configurations, the 3 TRs provide direct current.
The batteries provide direct current in particular configurations only.
a third battery (APU BAT), identical to the others, provides DC current for the APU starting.
a fourth TR (APU TR), identical to the others, provides DC current for the APU BAT charge and the
APU starting.
(a)
TR
(Ref. 24-32-00, 24-34-00)
Each TR transforms the three-phase alternating current into direct current (28 VDC).
Upon energization, the TR operates and supplies the DC network via a contactor controlled by the
internal TR logic.
In case of failure, the TR generates a FAULT signal to the CMS and SDAC for maintenance
purposes.
It is possible to reset the TR from the CMS or through a pushbutton switch located on the TR front
face.
In addition, the TR generates proper electrical parameters to the SD.
(b)
APU TR
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-32-00-00)
The APU TR is used to:
charge the APU battery,
start the APU alone or coupled with the APU battery.
(c)
Batteries
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-38-00-00)
Each of the two main batteries has a nominal capacity of 50 Ah and a nominal voltage of 24 VDC.
The main function of the main batteries is to supply the DC network in some configurations.
A dedicated APU battery identical to the main batteries is used to start the APU.
A Battery Charge Limiter (BCL) serves to control each battery contactor when the BAT pushbutton
switch is in the AUTO configuration.

In addition, each BCL includes a BITE and self monitoring system which analyzes the faults of the
internal or peripheral information. Initiation of the test is possible via the CMS or at each power up
(on ground).
Each BCL delivers electrical parameters and warning concerning each battery to the SD.

the ESS TR supplies them.

(4)

The AC BUS 1-1 supplies the ESS TR.

Configuration in the event of TR loss
(a)
TR1
If there is loss of the TR1, the TR2 automatically restores supply to the DC BUS 1 and the DC BAT
BUS.
(b)
TR2

(c)

TR2 loss leads to the symmetrical recovery of DC BUS 2 from the TR1.
ESS TR

In the event of ESS TR loss and if the TR 2 is available, the DC ESS BUS and DC SHED ESS BUS
are automatically recovered by the TR1 through the DC BAT BUS and the DC BUS 1.
If the TR 2 is not available, the DC ESS BUS and the DC SHED ESS BUS are no longer supplied
and the bus 2PP is supplied by the TR 1.
(d)
TR1 and TR2

(5)

In the event of TR1 and TR2 loss, the DC ESS BUS and DC SHED ESS BUS remain supplied by
the ESS TR.

E. Power Supply Via the External Power Receptacle
(1)
AC external power control supply
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-41-00-00)
(a)
Ground power unit
An external power receptacle located aft of the nose landing gear well enables power supply of the
aircraft network. This is performed by means of a three-phase, 400 Hz 115/200 VAC ground power
unit.
A second external power receptacle can be used with the three-phase, 400 Hz, 115/200 VAC ground
power unit.
External power supply is controlled from the ELEC control panel on the cockpit overhead panel and
via the GAPCU.
(b)

Ground and Auxiliary Power Control Unit (GAPCU)

The GAPCU includes a BITE and self monitoring system which analyzes most of the faults which
may affect the channel. The system memorizes the corresponding information in a non-volatile
memory.
The GAPCU supplies the CMC(s) with the full fault information from the GCU (related to all the
channels). The GAPCU is a letter box for the BITE of the GCUs.
The test is initialized:
either on the ground by the CMS
or automatically at each power-up.

(2)

Then each IDG receives the test request.

Ground service bus control
(Ref. 24-42-00, 24-43-00)
It is possible to supply a part of the aircraft electrical network as follows, directly from the external power
receptacle, to carry out ground service operations:
supply of part of the AC network: AC SERVICE BUS (210XP, 212XP, 214XP, 216XP, 111XP, 113XP
and 115XP),

supply of part of the DC network: DC SERVICE BUS (6PP), without energization of the whole aircraft
electrical network.
The GROUND SELECT CONTROL switch located on the forward attendant panel serves to control the
supply of the ground service network.
F. Circuit Breaker Monitoring
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-53-00-00)
The circuit breakers are located in the avionics compartment underneath the cockpit and in the bulk cargo
compartment. This is why monitoring means are required to enable the crew to check if circuit breakers are:
open, on the ground,
tripped, in flight.
The circuit breakers are monitored individually by the CBMU (Circuit Breaker Monitoring Unit) which is
linked to each circuit breaker auxiliary contact.
The principal functions of the CBMU are:
acquisition of the circuit breaker position,
monitoring of the circuit breaker,
circuit breaker identification and transmission to the ECAM to build C/B page display,
BITE function.
In case of circuit breaker tripping, a warning signal is generated to the EWD.
The crew can then call up the circuit breaker tripped list on the SD.
In addition, in case of CBMU failure, a fault message is generated to the EWD.
The BITE functions are:
to monitor and test the CBMU and the associated inputs,
to collect the failures and store the corresponding fault codes in the non volatile memory (NVM),
to transmit the failure message to the CMC(s) through an ARINC bus 429.
4. Operation/Control and Indicating
Controls and indications related to the electrical generation and distribution are on:
the ELEC control panels (235VU and 211VU),
ECAM displays (EWD and SD),
the forward Cabin Attendant Panel (5001VU),
the Centralized Maintenance System (CMS).
A. ELEC Control Panels
(Ref. Fig. Control and Indicating - Component Location)
They are two electrical control panels:
the EMER ELEC control panel (211VU) located on the overhead panel in the cockpit,
the ELEC control panel (235VU) located on the overhead panel in the cockpit.
B. Engine/Warning Display (EWD) and System Display (SD)

The electrical generation system block diagram is displayed on the SD on two separated pages :
the ELEC AC page (Ref. AMM D/O 24-27-00-00) ,
the ELEC DC page (Ref. AMM D/O 24-37-00-00) .
The warnings concerning the electrical system are displayed on the EWD.
C. Forward Cabin Attendant Panel
The GND SELECT CTL switch is located on the forward Cabin Attendant Panel. It controls the power supply
to the ground/flight service network.

24-00 - ELECTRICAL POWER - GENERAL

The purpose of the CMS is to give a centralized maintenance aid to the maintenance personnel.
5. BITE Test
A. Purpose
Line maintenance of the electronic systems is based on the use of the Centralized Maintenance System
(CMS).
The CMS enables intervention at system or sub-system level from the MCDU's located in the cockpit.
B. Utilization with the MCDU's
From the MCDU it is possible:
to read the maintenance information,
to initiate various tests.
C. Connected Electrical Equipment
The electrical equipment connected to CMS are:
the GAPCU,
the BCLs,
the emergency GCU,
the TRs,
the CBMU,
the ECMUs,
the ELMU.
D. Communication Between the Equipment and the CMS(s)
The GAPCU, BCLs, CBMU and ECMUs can memorize fault codes and communicate with the CMC(s) via
ARINC 429 busses.
The emergency GCU and the four TRs are connected to the CMC(s) by a discrete link. Thus it is only
possible to know the status of these items of equipment (OK or faulty during SYSTEM REPORT/TEST
sequence).
NOTE: The GCU1, GCU2, GCU3, GCU4 are continuously monitored by the GAPCU. The GAPCU can then
transmit to the CMCs all the failure messages corresponding to the failure codes recorded by these
GCUs and the GAPCU. The static inverter is connected to the SDACs by a discrete link; the SDACs
transmit static inverter fault information to the CMC(s) via the ARINC 429 bus.
