(B-3) Objective: To observe connections between learning language and learning to read
and write.
Directions: Observe how the teacher makes the connections between learning language and
learning to read and write.
1. What concepts about written language are students learning?
That words represent things.
That stories are told with pictures and words on paper.
That letters represent sounds.
Concepts of print.
That stories have a title, are written by authors and are illustrated by illustrators.
That stories have characters (people and animals) and settings (where things happen).
2. Describe how the teacher makes connections between learning language and
learning to read and write.
Song/video with letter, sound and a word starting with that sound, repeated daily.
Before reading a book: Talks about the topic. Asks questions to activate background knowledge.
While reading a book: Points to the picture and gets students to name the subject (e.g., the
animal) before reading about it on the page.
Models looking at the first letter of a word and using the picture for clues.
Talks about the words: E.g., for text She is eating. Crunch, crunch crunch! she said, The
words are to make the sound of her eating (crunch).
For students who cannot yet write their names independently she writes the name with
highlighter for the child to trace over with a pencil.
For writing activities: She says, Tell me a story using pictures or pictures and words.
3. Describe how the teacher makes connections between learning language and
learning to read and write for students whose first language is not English.
These students are more reliant on the pictures, so she emphasizes that.
