(D-10) Objective: To observe approaches teachers use to teach literacy to culturally and
linguistically diverse students.
Directions: Interview a teacher. The questions below are guidelines; you may use them or use
your own. If you use your own, please provide the questions.
1. What do you do in the classroom to meet the literacy needs of culturally and linguistically
diverse students?
Picture support. Shortened directions. Chunking directions.

How do you determine if the action taken meets the needs of students?
If they understand what Im trying to get them to do.

3. What happens if the literacy approaches are not effective?


Try a different approach, more interventions.
4. Are parents involved in the process? Explain.
Not at this point. Toward the end of October the school will have ESL meetings about
expectations and teach parents tasks, e.g., show them how to sound out words with their children.
5. What support do you receive from the following entities for help with literacy instruction?
Ideas could be Teachers, Reading coach, Curriculum leader, Assistant Principal/Principal,
School District, State Department of Public Instruction, Professional organization(s)
An ESL teacher pulls the students out and works with them several times a week. Some of the
students also have support from the speech/language expert.
