multimedia, and create a visual cartoon. Multiple Internet websites are used. A student sample of the quiz and
cartoon can be found below.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
Students will understand David Crocketts significance in early United States history by exploring his life,
military service, and political contributions and displaying their knowledge through a quiz and comic.
Academic language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is part of a larger unit about United States history as stated in the TN social studies standards 2.0.
The research and knowledge we learn about David Crockett will help the students make inferences and relate
his life to other leaders of America and the social structure of the United States.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction (5 min): Class, lets step into our time machine and travel back into time with Davy Crockett. We
are going to visit a log cabin in Tennessee, the bears and raccoons in the woods, battle fields, and Texas before
and after its independence from Mexico. We are going to use our computers to learn about the accomplishments
and life of Davy. We will showcase what we learn by making a comic.
Procedures:
Prior to the Computer (10 min)
Teacher Procedures: After the Introduction, pass out the David Crockett Quiz. Remind the students
about the computer policy and Internet safety. Explain that all the answers on the quiz can be found on
the links provided.
Student Procedures: Students will get out their computers, review the computer policy, and begin to find
the required links using the Internet.
At the Computer (2 hours)
Teacher Procedures: While students begin finding the links, walk around and help anyone who is having
difficulty. This will help them stay engaged and focused on the readings. Explain the importance of note
taking and to take thorough notes because that will be what they use for their comic and presentations.
When multiple students are done reading, write the instructions for the comic on the board. Tell the
students to begin on their comic after they are done reading. The comic will represent facts they have
read about David Crockett. What they do not finish in class will be assigned as homework.
