Time: 9:38 to 10:51
Duration: 73 Minutes
Location: C249

Course: Science and Technology

Cycle/Year: 2/2

Objectives
(SWBAT)

By the end of this class, students will be able to individually answer a question
asking them to calculate the concentration of a solution and convert between the
different units of concentration.

Big Idea

Concentration is a ratio used to compare solutions.

Subject Specific
Competencies

Understands the scientific principles underlying the issue.

Progression of
Learning Topics

3. Properties of Solutions
b. Solute Recognizes the solute in a given aqueous solution.
c. Solvent Recognizes the solvent in a given aqueous solution.
d. Concentration
i. Defines the concept of the concentration of a solution
ii. Describes the effect of variations in the quantity of solute or
solvent on a solutions concentration.
iv. Determines the concentration of an aqueous solution (g/L,
percentage or ppm.)

Materials needed

Concentration Worksheet.

Context

This is a topic that we started last class. Many of the vocabulary terms were
covered in the first class and we did a couple of practice questions together
before the students had a chance to try some questions on their own. I gave a
two question assessment at the end of class that I picked up to see where they
were struggling with the topic. From that assessment, I know that I need to reexplain how to use the concentration formula (C=m/v) and emphasize that when
converting concentrations into other units, they must change the given variables
into g/mL first.

Vocabulary

Concentration: The amount of a dissolved substance in a given volume of

solvent.
Solute: The minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent.
Solvent: The liquid in which a solute is dissolved to form a solution.

Go over Agenda
Learning Activity #1: Concept Review using Phet Simulation
Recall to previous class discussion solvent, solute and solutions.
Ask questions:
What is the solute in this situation?
What is the solvent in this situation?
What is the solution in this situation?
How could we increase the concentration of the solution?
How could we decrease the concentration of the solution?
What will happen to the concentration if I open the drain at the bottom?
Depending on class participation I may have to ask more leading questions such
as: How will the concentration change if I add more water?
Learning Activity #2: Review Notes and Practice Problems as a Class
Before continuing with the notes/practice problems, I will review the two areas
where students seemed to struggle on the assessment from last class.
1) Setting up a problem using the C=m/v formula.
a. Mass is in g and on the top, volume is in mL or L and is on the
bottom.
2) Converting concentrations.
a. Change your concentration into g/mL
We will then continue the notes by completing the practice problems on the
smartboard. These problems are similar to what will be on the solutions quiz.
The last few problems are old exam questions. The students should expect to
see something similar on their final exam.
Learning Activity #3: Concentration Worksheet (Done in pairs)
Students will continue working on their concentration worksheet. They will be
allowed to work in pairs or listen to music if they stay productive and try to work
through the questions.
I will put the answers to the questions they were supposed to complete for
homework up on the board so they can see if they are on the right track. I will
then circulate the classroom to make sure they are staying on task and answer
any questions they have. During this time, I will also hand back their assessment
from last class so that they can answer todays questions on the same sheet.
Assessment: Short Answer Question
At 10:45 I will stop the class and ask them to put away their notes and take out
the paper they answered the assessment questions from last class on. I will then
project the following question on the board for them to answer:
Which of the following solutions is the most concentrated?
1) A solution with a concentration of 25%
2) A solution with a total volume of 350mL with 45g of solute.
3) A solution with a concentration of 50 g/L
Homework: No homework. We will be doing a pre-quiz next class. The
solutions quiz will tentatively be set for Thursday, Sept. 29th

Differentiation

Students will write notes, listen to explanations and be shown a visual simulation
of a solution.
Students will have the opportunity to work in pairs on the worksheet.
