College of Nursing
NUR4948L Preceptorship Evaluation
As the semester comes to an end we value your input as the clinical preceptor and will use
your comments in the students final semester evaluation. If you can take a minute to write
a brief narrative addressing these headings we will incorporate into the final evaluation.
CLINICAL PRECEPTOR EVALUATION OF STUDENT:
Student Name: Jessica Jean Louis
Clinical Preceptor Name: Holley Nordman
Date: November 17, 2016
Motivation to Learn:
Throughout Jessicas preceptorship she continued to have incredible motivation to learn. I felt
like I could see the wheels in her brain quickly spinning taking in all the information she was
experiencing in order to put the pieces of the academic and clinical nursing puzzle together. She
actively sought out opportunities for new experiences and overcame her insecurities to challenge
herself.
Patient Assessment
Jessica has very thorough assessment skills. On a few occasions, she noticed unusual aspects of
patients assessments that previous RNs had not noticed. I was consistently impressed with
Jessicas assessment skills.

Communication
I saw a positive change in Jessicas communication skills throughout her preceptorship. Initially
she was reserved with both me and the patients. As her confidence and familiarity with the unit
grew, she blossomed. She developed a beautiful way of connecting with the patients. She shows
great maturity and is able to communicate with people of various backgrounds, ages and
conditions.

Skills:
Just like all new nurses, Jessica will continue to grow over time in mastering her nursing skills.
Some of her skills though she has already mastered. She inserted a number of foley/straight
catheters, removed IVs, did dressing changes, hung IV meds, programmed IV pumps, She was
always open to trying new skills or watching and learning how something was done.
Safety

Initially, I was concerned with the way Jessica was administered injections such as insulin and
heparin. The needles we have at the hospital are self-retractable and I dont know that she was
familiar with how to properly use them. Over the first few weeks of her preceptorship, we
continued to practice and perfect her injection administration skills to protect herself and her
patient for any unintended needle sticks. We often talked about why certain practices happen as
it related to safety and developing healthy habits.
Documentation
Jessica was thorough and accurate in her documentation skills.
Professionalism
Jessica consistently demonstrated the highest levels of professionalism in all of her interactions
with me, my colleagues and our patients. She was always on time, prepared and ready to work
and learn.
