My topic will be 3 Common Sports Injuries in which I will be researching the cause,
treatment and rehabilitation of sprained ankles, concussions, and injured ACLs. I
chose this topic because whenever around sports, you will always see injuries.
These 3 injuries are very common, so I thought it would be interesting to see what
causes them to be so common.

- Occurs when the ligaments in the ankle are stretched too much

What is an injured ACL?

- The stretching or tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament

Causes of injured ACLs

- Occurs when your knee is hit hard, over extending of the knee, or quickly stopping
and changing directions
Different types of ACL injuries

- Partial or complete tears in different parts of the ligament

Symptoms- a popping sound when the injury occurs, swelling, pain when you put weight on

your knee

Treatment-

- If treatment is needed it is usually surgery, depending on the extent of the injury.

Prevention- Some college programs are now putting their athletes through ACL prevention

programs

- Building strength in your knee/leg will help

-Women are more likely to receive ACL tears than men

- Most tears occur in the middle of the ligament

- The Meniscus and MCL are often effected when the ACL is injured
- Basketball, Football, Soccer, and Skiing are the sports that see the most ACL

injuries

What is a concussion?

- Your brain hitting the inner sides of your skull

Causes of a concussion- strong blows to the head
Symptoms-

- feeling of pressure in the head, vomiting, slurred speech, dazed, fatigue, nausea,

ringing in ears, sensitive to light, confusion, headache, and amnesia

Delayed Symptoms-

- depression, personality changes, irritability, sleep problems, concentration

problems, disorders in taste and smell

Treatment- There is no treatment for concussions, must let it go away on its own

Rehabilitation-

- Different types of therapy can be used depending on the parts of the brain
effected, not always needed.

- Most concussions come from contact sports (football and womens soccer)
- Can lead to epilepsy

- Rarely causes brain bleeding, but can be fatal if they do

- Athletes are not allowed to return to sports while still having symptoms
- Usually only causes temporary problems
- Classified as a traumatic brain injury
- People are often not aware when they have a concussion

Throughout the semester I learned a lot from Coach Blinka. I learned more than just
sports. I learned social skills and how to handle problems in a professional manner.
Almost every day a girl would come to her about a problem or an issue and I always
watched new ways how she handled each one. She knows a lot about sports so it
really helped me with parts of my project.

Special thanks to Coach Blinka, Mrs. Click, my

mother and father, my brother, as well as the
graders. Thank you so much!
