youtube while they work. Ecology by Mr. Parr or it starts with the producers by
Mr Parr.

Procedure

Good morning 4th graders!!! Today we are going to look at some life
requirements of plants and animals but we are going to mainly focus on
animals because we went over plant requirements in second grade.
Wait I might not have had everyone in second grade so lets review.
Plants need What to survive ( write on board)
plants need air, water, light , and and those three things help them make
food through the process of photosynthesis . Plants use food as a
source of energy and as a source for growth and repair. (3min)
Now animals are just about the same. They need air, food and water to
survive. Animals use the food as a source of energy and as a source for
growth and repair. (2min)
So now that we know what animals and plants need for survival. Lets
dive into what characteristics some animals have to help them survive.
Let's name some good characteristics to have for survival. Sharp
teeth size, claws, size, quick they are, if they can fly or swim etc (4min)
How about if they were the same species quickness, old vs young,

part of a family or alone, injured or blind, (4 min)

Ok now we are going to play a game to help solidify what we just

learned. This game is called Survival of the fittest est est.
Explain the game
The game would consist of these rules and playing pieces. There is a
pile of food (building blocs or some other easily picked up object) placed
in the center of the playing area. A big enough area is necessary for this
game and maybe played outside. Your goal is to gather food and bring it
back to your starting point. The starting points can vary with what space
you have . Every person is given a card that tells them what certain
characteristic they have to to have while the game is played. The
different ones are (1) blind- blindfolded, (2) injured- jump on one foot (3)
normal (4) family- they have to hold hands (5) old have to walk toe to
heel. You can divvy those up to however many you want pers class size.
You will also have a certain amount of scavengers that will go around
and steal food from the others if they are not guarding their own food
pile. The scavengers will bring the stolen food back to the teacher, so
the teacher can replenish the food pile in the middle. (instruct and play
the game-15min)
Get students back into their seats (1min)
After the game set up for a little independent work and play the song
from youtube (8 min)
Assessment(s)

The teacher will use the class discussions and personal observations to
assess learners understanding of each objective. The teacher will also
evaluate the independent worksheet for competency and completion.
