This year we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Sam Sylvia Pro-Am Golf Tournament,
a fundraising event to benefit the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club. The success of this event requires the effort of
many individuals and the generous support of the business community. Looking back, when the tournament was
only the ambitious dream of Sam Sylvia, Frenchie Doucette and Marty Texeira to today, it is remarkable to see this
tournament is now held in the highest regard to the NEPGA and all participants.
We want to thank the Board of Governors and the members of Sankaty Head Golf Club for their continued support;
their generosity is the key to the tournaments existence and future success. With their partnership, we generate
much needed revenue for our annual operating budget. We owe a debt of gratitude to Head Pro Mark Heartfield;
Bob Kuratek, Lee Jay Hurley, Chris Ryder and the entire Club staff.
We also want to thank the event committee and Club staff for their countless hours
of involvement to ensure the tournaments success.
Everyone involved in the tournament can be proud of their contribution to Nantuckets largest youth organization
as it significantly provides for Nantuckets youth and the community.
We appreciate your support and look forward to this years tournament.

how we got started

tournament history
I will never forget the day, 21 years ago, when Sam Sylvia, Frenchie Doucette, Kevin Kalman and I met in the old mens locker
room at Sankaty Head Golf Club to discuss the possibility of having a large Pro-Am at Sankaty Head to help raise money for the
Nantucket Boys & Girls Club. Sam was the voice behind this great idea, and he had dreams of bringing in PGA Tour players and
celebrities to play with club members as well as other Nantucket golfers to raise money for this wonderful charity. Learning that
the expenses involved in flying in pros and celebrities to stay and play on Nantucket were prohibitive, we shifted gears from
PGA Tour players, to PGA club professionals from New England, and the tournament was born.
Sam wanted this event to be the largest Pro-Am in New England, and he wanted to pay the winner more than any other event
in the NEPGA. Frenchie had numerous contacts with celebrities and headed up that end of the event. Kevin Kalman was a
board member of the club at that time, and it was he who came up with the idea of having a live and silent auction to raise
additional funds. And so, in 1994, we welcomed Carlton Fisk, Mike Dunleavy, Bobby Orr and the much beloved Boston sports
anchorman, Bob Lobel, to that first tournament!
Here we are 20 years later and the event still stands as the most popular Pro-Am golf tournament in New England. We are lucky
enough to attract the finest professionals in the NEPGA. We fill the field each year with great amateur golfers who continue to
raise lots of money for the Boys and Girls Club and in 2013, 20 years later, we will once again welcome Bob Lobel to help us
celebrate the tournament and the Boys & Girls Club.
This was the dream that Sam, Frenchie, Kevin and I shared all those years ago in that old locker room, and it is with that
fond memory in my mind that I welcome you to Sankaty Head for our 20th Anniversary Sam Sylvia Pro-Am. Thank you all
for participating and I hope you enjoy this years event.

Greg Yeomans
Greg is entering his tenth season as the Head Golf Professional at the Bay Club where
he manages golf operations including tournaments, merchandising and services.
His philosophy for maintaining a culture of warmth and friendliness among members
and staff alike ensures an enjoyable golf experiences for all players.
In addition to Gregs responsibilities at the Bay Club, is an active member of the
New England PGA governance and is currently is serving his third year as the
Cape Cod PGA Chapter President. As NEPGA Tournament Chair, he reprmembrs the
entire region which includes all the New England states except Connecticut and sits
on the NEPGA Board as well as the Junior Golf and Sponsorship Committees.
Greg is an accomplished player as well, having twice competed in the Professional National
Championship, an event that hosts the best US playing professionals. For the past four years
(2009-2012) he has been the reigning NEPGA Cape Cod Chapter Player of the Year, won two
Stroke Play Championships (2006, 2010) and five Match Play Championships (2005, 2008,
2009, 2010 and 2012) in the Cape Cod Chapter. Greg considers playing in the 2002 Greater
Hartford Open PGA Tour event as his playing career highlight.
Prior to coming to the Bay Club, Greg was Head Golf Professional at Stanley Golf Course in
New Britain, Connecticut, and Assistant Pro at both Sterling Farms in Stamford, Connecticut
and the Black Hall Club in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
