Dayton C Miller Musical Iconography Collection at the Library of Congress

This collection holds about 850 prints related to mostly wind instruments. The
Dayton C Miller collection also includes

several images of keyboard, string and

other types of instruments from the fifteenth to the twentieth century. Each print or
picture provides information about the artist, approximate date created (century),
text inscriptions within the item as well as many other important details.
This collection allows the user to browser content by instrument, century, artist
nationality and name. Researchers may need to consult this collection to find
features (size, color, design, etc.) of instruments from a specific time-period,
different settings in which they were performed and possible technical aspects
based on the posture of the performer depicted in each image. Finally, this
collection enables users to look at the images online anywhere in the world.

Iconography Database at the Eastman School of Music

This database enables users to search all iconography materials located within five
different image collections at Eastman School of Music. The first collection is the
Eastman School Photo Archive. Per its description, this collection holds the images
of individuals including faculty, staff, students, administration, alumni, and
prominent visitors to the school. In addition, the Iconography Archive holds several
hundred images unrelated to the Eastman School, but which have been donated to
the Sibley Music Library. Those photographs date back to the mid-nineteenth
century and include many performers and composers.
The second collection is the Print Collection. Per its description, this collection
constitutes a teaching resource of several hundred graphic prints from the
sixteenth-century to the present. All major types of print process are represented.
Almost all the prints relate to music or musical subjects. The third collection is the
Postcard Collection; this collection includes about 300 post cards from the late

nineteenth century to the present. Most this items are photographic reproductions
of composers and performers, specially, famous opera singers.

The fourth collection is known as the Alexander Leventon collection. As indicated in

the name, this collection is exclusively dedicated to the works of laureated
photographer Alexander Leventon. Interestingly, this photographer used to be the
concertmaster of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra before pursuing a career in
photography. This collection includes pictures of both nationally and locally
(Rochester, NY) recognized musicians. The fifth and last collection is known as the
Louis Ouzer Collection, this collection exclusively holds photographs by Louis Ouzer.
Most of these are pictures of famous American and International artists.
Given that this database and all the materials are held at the Sibley Music Library,
which is part of a private institution (University of Rochester) serving the Eastman
School of Music, the only way to access this collection is on-site during operating
hours under supervision by a staff member. Researches are encouraged to register
as guest users at the circulation desk but that does not grant access to any
collection or permission to document or make duplciations. Researches may need to
consult these resources to find exclusive photographic material of performers,
composers and miscellaneous archives of historical significance that can only be
found within these collections.
