Activity Design Plan
Activity Objective
The students will comprehend the basic calculation techniques by reviewing the general
understanding of the middle school mathematics.
Description of Activity
The game called Mathematics Feud is created as a novel way to review the general
understanding of the middle school mathematics. The students will compete against each other in
an organized, structured activity that will resurface previous learning from the mathematics class.
Motivation
For the extrinsic motivation, the students who answer correctly will get the candies as the award.
Intrinsically, by reviewing the concepts of the basic knowledge, the students can check and
improve the calculation skills for future. In addition, because the activity requires the speed for
the students as well, they can calculate faster.
Directions
1. Contestants will be drawn randomly using popsicle sticks.
2. First contestant to ring in answers question.
3. You may not ring in before the question is completely read.
4. Once you ring in, you will have 8 seconds to answer.
5. You may not consult anyone at any time.
6. Once the question is answered, if the response given is incorrect, the other contestant

will have 8 seconds to answer, again you may not consult anyone.
7. Contestants may not use a review sheet at the podium.
8. If a member of the audience shouts out the answer, the question is dead.
9. If there is more than one correct answer, only the top three out of 100 will be accepted.
Understanding of the directions will be checked by asking randomly selected students the
following set of questions:

How will contestants be chosen?

Which contestant will be the first to answer the question?
When may you ring the bell?
How long do you get to answer the question?
Are you allowed to ask another person for help in answering the question?
What happens if the answer is incorrect?
Are contestants allowed to use a review sheet when competing?
What happens if someone shouts out the answer?
If there is more than one correct answer, which answers will be accepted?
Summarize the directions of the game.

About selecting the students, they will be chosen by throwing a soft toy around the room.
Active Participation
All students will be involved through random selection by using popsicle sticks, tossing a soft
toy around the room and using the technique of Ask-Pause-Call when checking for

understanding. Students will need to be active listeners so that they hear the correct responses to
solidify important concepts and to actively compete when an incorrect response is given.
On-task behavior will be maximized by using a timer to precisely time the response time of each
question. By using the popsicle sticks, contestants will be quickly chosen. Students will be
consistently engaged throughout the activity. All electronic devices will be turned off and laptops
will be closed.
Transitioning times will be minimized by strictly adhering to the precise time restrictions
identified in the directions.
Expectations of Students Behavior
Students will be respectful of their colleagues by being quiet during the asking of the questions
and the contestants response. A moderate level of noise will be expected as the others cheer for
the winning contestant. Blurting answers will result in the question being dead. The signal times
up, hands up will be used to modulate the noise level in case students get too loud or directions
need to be resurfaced. Movement will be smooth and fluid. When chosen, students will take their
respective places by the ringers and face me as I read the question. The winner of the round will
get the candy and return to his/her seat. The remaining contender will return to the seat. If one of
the audience answers a question that has not been responded to by either one of the contestants,
he/she will get the candy and directly go back to the seat.

Modeling
A practice round will be played with two students randomly chosen from the audience. Each step
will be labeled as they go through the process of playing the game. Once the correct performance
is both shown and the criteria labeled and any steps are clarified, the game will begin.
*Note: The creation of this game comes from the television game show, Family Feud.
