The 78th Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) National Convention will be
hosted by the Cagayan de Oro chapter. The event will be on February 22-25, 2017 at
Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Limketkai Drive, Cagayan de Oro City. In behalf of the organizing
team, I am cordially inviting you and your students to participate in the PIChE National

RULES FOR THE CHE QUIZ BOWL 2017

Team Composition:
1. Each participating team shall be composed of a maximum of four members and one faculty coach.
The Dean or Ch.E. Department Chair of the school must endorse the
names of the team members and the faculty coach through a registration form to be submitted
to
the
Contest
Secretariat
prior
to
the
contest
proper.
2. Only currently enrolled undergraduate Chemical Engineering students are allowed to join as team
members. They must present their validated student ID cards and/or registration forms upon registration.
3. Each team must assign a Team Captain. Only the Team Captain or the faculty coach may act
spokesperson
for
the
team
during
the
contest
proper.

4. Only THREE members at a time shall occupy their teams table during the contest proper.
Substitutions shall be allowed only between rounds.

Registration Fee:
PhP 700.00 per team and PhP 350.00 per student member (for food)
Quiz Topics and Question Types:
1. The following topics shall be the scope of the Quiz Bowl:
a) Core ChE Courses: ChE Calculations, Transport Phenomena (Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer
and Fluid Flow), Separation Processes, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Chemical
Reaction Engineering, Plant and Equipment Design, Instrumentation and Process Control,
Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Process Industries and Chemical Engineering Laws,
Contracts and Ethics
b) Allied ChE Courses: Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry,
Environmental Engineering and Biotechnology, and Materials Science and Engineering

2. The following question types shall be given:


a) Identification Type. The team must write the answer to the question clearly. Answers
spelling will not be accepted.

b) Problem Type. The team must write down the numerical answer to the question accurate up
to two decimal places together with the appropriate unit, unless otherwise stated. The point-credit
for each question will be 10, 15 or 20, depending on the level of difficulty of the question/problem.

c) In addition, each question shall be given a time limit for the teams to submit their answers.
3. A total of 30 questions shall be given, divided into three rounds of 10 questions each.

Mechanics of Contest Proper:


1. The official quizmaster reads the Type, Credit Points, and Time Limit of the question. For problem
questions, the quizmaster will ask the watchers to get copies of the question and wait for the
watchers to return to their stations before signaling them to give the copies to the teams.
The quizmaster will then read the question. The question shall be read twice and a slide of the
question shall be projected on the screen. Timing will begin only after the second reading of the
question.
2. Teams must write their answers on their official answer sheet and must submit the sheet to
their official watcher before the time limit expires; otherwise, they shall be considered to have
no answer to the question.
3. The use of calculators shall be allowed only for problem-type questions. All calculators shall be
pre-checked by the organizers prior to use. Programmable calculators shall be allowed only if it is
free of stored programs and library function menu.
4. After all teams have submitted their answers, the correct answer to the question shall be
projected on the screen and read by the quizmaster for the information of the teams and the
audience. An official scorer shall monitor which teams get the correct answer.
5. Any protest or inquiry from the teams regarding the answer must be made prior to the reading of the
next question; otherwise, the Board of Judges will entertain no more protests or inquiries
pertaining to the said question.
6. The decision of the Board of Judges on any protest or inquiry shall be considered final and
not subject to appeal.
7. A round is completed after 10 questions. A short intermission follows; at this point teams may field in
substitutes.
8. The official scorer shall announce a running total of team scores at the end of the first and
second rounds.

9. The teams getting the three highest points after the 30th question shall be declared the official
winners of the PICHE Quiz Bowl National Finals.
10. The top three teams shall also receive trophies, medals and cash prizes.

In case of tie for any place:


The team which got the most number of questions answered correctly after the three rounds shall be
favored.
In case the tie is still not broken by the preceding rule, a series of questions shall be given until the tie
is broken.
11. The Quiz Bowl organizers reserve the right to eject any participant or member of the
audience who they believe is detrimental to the orderly conduct of the contest.

PIChE National Undergraduate Research Contest

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS


Intending authors are invited to submit a one-page abstract (MS Word Format) on topics within the
scope of the convention, stating clearly the purpose of the work, approach and significant results. A
maximum of 5 key words should be included in the abstract. Abstract must be prepared on a single side,
single column with margins set to 3cm (left), 1.75cm (right), 2.5cm (top and bottom), single space
typewritten form and must include the authors address, affiliation, telephone, email and fax numbers. Use
16-point for the title, 10-point for the affiliation and references, and 12-point for the rest of the text. Except
for special symbols and units, Times New Roman font is preferred.
The abstract will be reviewed by the conferences Technical Committee. The authors will then be
required to submit a full paper once the abstract is accepted. The final acceptance will be based on the
content of the full paper. All papers accepted for oral presentation will be incorporated in the conference
proceedings, while papers accepted for poster presentation will be informed of further details on the format
for the posters. The abstract should be submitted online to roseigdon@gmail.com and
csbalagtas@xu.edu.ph. Upon receipt of your submission, you will receive an acknowledgement.
