Instructional Objective(s)
After watching video clips and participating in class readings and discussions about the
proceedings before and after the Civil War, students will be able to identify the causes and
effects and distinguish the positive and negative outcomes of the war.

Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of
major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in the history of the United
States and New York.
Indicator
This will be evident when students are able to identify the key events that happened
during this time period and its consequences following the war.

Motivation

Students will watch a short BrainPOP video that explains what issues were different
between the North and the South prior to the Civil War.
Developmental Procedures
1. Students will watch a video that describes the reasons why the Union and Confederate
armies went to war. (What were two causes of the Civil War?)
2. Students will listen and take notes as the teacher discusses the causes and effects of the
Civil War using specific examples.
3. Students will team up with their partner where they will name and describe the major

effects of the war and then present the thoughts to the class. (What is one consequence of
the Civil War?)
Instructional Strategies
Direct Instruction: Students will be guided by the teacher through lectures on the topic.
Teacher Demonstration: Students will be given a variety of examples relatable to their life
experiences to help them understand the topic.
Group Discussion: Students will participate in the class discussion in groups of three to discuss
the causes and effects of the Civil War.
Read Aloud: Students will take turns reading paragraphs from the text
Adaptations

Links will be provided of the clips that were viewed in class to all students to be
reviewed on their own time.
For all students that it is necessary for, extra time will be given for all assessments
Differentiation of Instruction

Level 1: Students will be able to name the causes and effects of the Civil War with the help of a
textbook, the teachers PowerPoint and the students own class notes.
Level 2: Students will be able to name the causes and effects of the Civil War with the help of
the students own class notes.
Level 3: Students will be able to name the causes and effects of the Civil War.
Assessment
Students will be given an exit slip with multiple choice questions about the Civil War.
Independent Practice
For homework, students will answer with short answer questions about the Civil War.
Follow-up: Direct Teacher Intervention
The student, under direct intervention with the teacher, will match the causes with the associated
effects of the Civil War using index cards. After, students will check their answers using the
website quizlet.
Follow-up: Academic Enrichment
Students will write their thoughts in their academic journal about how either the North or South
was right to go to war using specific examples used in class.
