Research has been done in many areas concerning college students and the different
ways they are most successful in learning. People process information and remember
and learn in a variety of different ways. One student may not benefit from information
presented in a certain way that is not best for their mind and personal learning style.
Many people may think of learning styles and only think of the visual, kinesthetic or
auditory categories. These three are the most common. However, there are many
more complex categories that many people may fit into better without even being aware.
Learning styles are made up of multiple dimensions. Even personality can influence the
way a student learns. Someone who is an introvert may learn best studying by
themselves, while an extrovert may learn best discussing and working in a group with
their peers. Some students of the sensation learning style have a focus on observing
and using common sense, while those of intuition like to daydream and considering
different theoretical ideas. Emotional elements such as responsibility, persistence and
motivation can influence the way a student learns new information. Even something as
simple as light can affect learning. Some students prefer to study in a well-lit room while
others may be annoyed by bright light.
A students learning style is one of the many things that make them unique. The article
explains the many different categories and elements that play into the way a student

processes information being taught to them. One suggestion in the article to teachers is
to survey or have students complete a test to determine their personal style of learning.
This way a teacher or professor can focus on students strengths and present
information in a way that will be most successful. This may involve classes using more
than one type of presenting materials or different activities to accommodate for all of the
individual learning styles. It all should start with a conscious effort from the instructor to
make the learning environment as successful as possible.
