Title:
Your Coach is Watching: Can a High School Regulate its Student-Athletes' Use of
Social Media?
Author:
Lauren
E.
Rosenbaum
This
article
goes
into
depth
on
the
ethics
of
Social
Media
privacy
within
high
school
sports.
The
author
starts
out
by
asking
the
audience
how
they
would
feel
if
their
coach
were
to
be
with
them
at
every
after
school
social
event,
every
sleep
over,
or
every
dinner
with
friends.
Would
you
and
your
group
of
friends
still
act
the
same?
Would
you
and
your
friends
still
talk
about
the
same
things?
In
the
article,
debates
over
social
media
and
privacy
take
place.
The
big
argument
is
whether
or
not
it
is
legally
right
for
coaches
to
be
able
to
police
their
players
social
media
accounts.
Certain
rules
and
regulations
limit
the
ability
of
coaches
and
school
officials
to
supervise
these
social
media
accounts.
For
instance,
a
public
school
can
oversee
what
is
being
said
if
it
is
happening
at
school,
or
if
it
is
taking
place
off
campus
but
is
a
distraction
to
the
rest
of
the
school
population.
For
example,
high
school
students
were
suspended
for
wearing
armbands
to
school
to
show
their
disapproval
of
the
Vietnam
conflict.
The
school
viewed
the
students
as
being
a
distraction.
This
action
was
then
taken
to
court
in
which
the
court
ruled
that
the
display
was
not
actually
or
potentially
disruptive.
The
court
then
ruled
that
with
the
absence
of
an
appropriate
reason
for
policing
the
students
speech,
the
students
must
be
granted
access
to
the
first
amendment
due
to
the
fact
the
school
is
a
marketplace
for
ideas.
This
too
speaks
for
Social
Media,
and
any
other
form
of
student
communication.
The
article
then
goes
on
to
talk
about
the
development
of
free
speech
within
schools
and
also
gives
specific
cases
where
violations
have
occurred.
