Abortion Is a Boon or a Curse in Disguise
Abortion has been subjected to various controversies and ideologies since many decades.
In this century where women are being given rights equivalent to men, abortion is still dealt with,
without giving regards to the personal interests of women. Though our society has come a long
way and women enjoy more freedom than they used to, few decades ago, but still there are
certain issues like abortion which still plague the mindset of our society. Abortion seems to be a
good choice or solution at a superficial level but it can be understood that this practice is
unethical and it does more harm than good, as we delve deeper into its various aspects in this
paper.
According to the ethical theory of consequentialism, abortion is deemed an evil practice
due to various problems it leads to, instantly and often later on. This theory discourages the
practice of abortion since it can be a cause of various complications in terms of health of the
woman undergoing abortion, loss of human life in a murderous way, uncivilized conduct as a
human being and disrespect to human life. According to the principle of Value of Life, every life
has its value and nobody should take control over it. (Marquis 183) This is in conformance with
the human nature which is naturally in favor of motherly love and propagation of human life.

Abortion should not be perceived as a medium of contraception, as it is a very risky

procedure leading to many critical health issues. Women lack information about the
complications that are often ensued after abortion. It is a too risky method as it involves the risk
to life of the mother and the unborn child both. The available statistics show that a considerable
percentage of women undergoing abortion develop the chances of contracting ectopic
complications, and the risks of developing inflammatory disease of the pelvis. It also leads to
occasional miscarriage later on in life. (Tietze 97) These critical health factors need to be kept in
mind along with the morals associated with killing an unborn child much before thinking about
abortion as a feasible option.
In few cases abortion is left as the only viable solution whereas the benefits surpass the
drawbacks. These situations comprise of incidents such as incest or rape, where a woman is
forcefully made pregnant without her approval which contributes to more psychological harm for
the victim or in the case of teenagers where their future prospects are diminished. In such
circumstances, the concept of abortion cannot be challenged because it will seem to be the only
feasible option available for woman. (Steinberg 483) It will not be feasible for ethicists to
discourage this remedy which is meant to help her get rid of the traumatic stage which usually
follows after such tragedies.
Abortion is a controversial topic because of the very reason that it serves as a boon for
some women while it proves to be a curse for others. As discussed in this paper, an ethical and
moral conduct is expected from every individual, being a responsible entity of the society. Every
life deserves to be nurtured and harnessed to its full potential. Apparently, the disadvantages
outweigh the benefits in most of the cases and that is why this practice needs to be reduced if not
abolished. Abortion should be looked at as a last alternative keeping in mind certain severe cases;

it should not be treated as a luxury or amenity but should be discouraged as much as possible.
Also, this deduction is in the best interest of women and the society when one delves deep into it.
