What is HCI Human Computer Interaction?

HCI is the study of how human interact with their computers. Designers and programmers
always have to think about HCI when making new software and products, because if they
invent a new piece of equipment that is revolutionary but near impossible to use then there
would be no point of them inventing it in the first place. This is why people have to consider
HCI because their products have to be easy to use by everyday people. HCI consists of 3
parts:

The User

The Computer

The Way They Work Together

If all of these 3 parts dont come together in a new software or product then a successful
human computer interaction wont happen. HCI also has many fields these are:
1.

Psychology

2.

Computer Science

3.

Language

4.

Sociology

5.

Ethnography

6.

Semiotics and Branding

7.

HCI related developments

In this task I will be look at recent HCI development, the HCI stand for human computer
interaction and of the years there have been many different type of HCI like ATMs, laptops and
mobile phones but for this I will talk about different HCI developments.

Touch Screen
The first one that I will talk about is Touch Screen now touch screen has been implement on
many different devices such as phones, laptops, TVs and cameras but there much more than
the nowadays but how it is used it very simple basic any device that has the technology in it
allows the users to touch the item to go on the internet, listen to music and look at files and
other thing all by touching which for many user this is just an easier way of interacting with a
device rather the physical doing the scrolling you move your finger up and down the devices
screen to move up and down.

Voice Commands
The second one that I will talk about is Voice Commands and again the has been implemented
in a few thing such as phones and PCs and I think even more thing in the passing years but it
like touch screen technologies really as it requires a users do soothing to navigate around the
device in question but it isnt touch it is speck, as you say a command to device will do the
exact thing you said e.g. you said play music the device will play music which for many user
this is just an easier way of interacting with a device because instead of actually doing all you
do is said a command to the device a it will do exactly what you said.

Tablets
The third HCI development that I will be talking about is Tablets and no not the medical kind
the tech kind so tablets have become a big thing nowadays as many business use them and
many people around the world uses or owns one as they are very popular and many
companies makes tablets such as Apple, Amazon, Samsung, Acer and many more, they are
used like a laptop but are far more portable and can be used on the move as well making them
really practical for business people as well as other who are always on the move.

Ultrasound fingerprint scanner

The fourth HCI development is Ultrasound fingerprint scanner which hasnt been implemented
into many devices mainly mobile phones security and computer security, this example of
fingerprint scanning is more modern than the original fingerprint scanning tech and this
scanner uses ultrasound or ultrasonic to scan the fingerprint by bouncing the sonic waves
against the finger from the print reading chip that the finger is placed on and turn it into
electrical signals, the ultrasonic can sense the depth of the ridges and valleys and then it
creates a 3D print, this in mainly use on both mobile phones and computers as a way to
heighten the user's security on these devices ensuring that these device are secure for any
unwanted users.

Curved display
The fifth and final HCI development that I will be talking about is Cured which mainly have
been implement in to mobile phones as Samsung Galaxy s6 Edge uses the curved display and
the display has also been used by companies such as Samsung and LG and many others, the
curved display which is mainly used on phone is used for displaying notification, text
messages, weather information while on a edge of a surface as one side of the phone curves to
lock on to the edge which is just make it more convenience of the users to get the phone or
even for the users to glance at the as the phone will hold in position.

Principle of HCI design

HCI is the way we communicate with the technology. For example: when we use ATM machine,
Deposit machine, TV, PC, IPOD. HCI has a big effect on the society. HCI also helps us to save
time. For example: when we use self-check- out machines in stores. It allows you to pay
quickly for the stuff you buy from the store rather than lining up. Self- checkout also helps the
customers to save time, for example on a self-checkout machines you can just scan your
product then it will display an option saying finish and pay, if you click on the button it will
give you the option to pay by cash or card, and if you choose card it will tell you to insert your
card into the chip-in devise. It also shows the name on of product you scanned and displays a
picture of the product, which makes it easier for the clients to use. Some people might not
know how to read but the image will help them.

What is perception?
Perception is when you look at something and come up with a response. For example, when
you see the color green you will straight away think of something which has the color green,
you might think of tree, grass and green lights.

Why is it needed?
Its used for to feel or see something, basically its used for to make an illusion. For example,
when you see a red cross in a white circle, you will know that it means stop sign. When you
see a red circle with a red line in the middle than you will eventually know it means no entry
sign. Red is mostly used within the sign to represent danger. So basically

The pop-out effect

The pop-out effect is when you are allowed to make one image stand out more than the other
images around it by using a different shape or color. It gives the illusion that something is
exploding out of the screen.
Whenever developers make an Interface they always take notes and thinks how to make a
user friendly for the client. So to make sure that its easy to use they draw up sketches, color
charts and with different types of background color and text. Its always important to make
sure that the interface is suitable for the user. As we know the left side of humans brain reacts
faster so this means that it will be a good idea to put the start-up menu on the left.

Behavior model
When we are interacting with a computer system, examining the mental actions of the user
and how they interact with the computer system.

Predictive models
Fitts law
Fitts Law is a model of human behavior which allows the estimate of human movement and
human motion based on time, aimed movement other than drawing or writing. In HCI Fitts law
is a suitable guide in interface design.

Information Processing
Information processing is basically how humans brain processes information.
First it will take the information in then it will process it. After the information is processed it
basically stores the information temporarily. It then acknowledges the information and makes
a decision. Before it takes any actions it basically processes the information first.

Page

Batch-11
Myat Sett Aung
Computer processes information kind of the same way. But one good thing about computer is
it can process information 24 hours and not require any sleep. A computer is able to do more
than one task at the same time, but a human can only do one task at a time. But still it needs
a person to give instruction to the computer. For example, if you want the system to open up
Microsoft word it wont open up, it will need a human being to click on the specific software
than it will follow the instruction. So basically whenever you click on something, within the
system some sort of coding goes in within the system.
Its scientifically proven that left side of the humans brain works faster. This means that if a
button is placed on the left side of the website then humans brain process it faster. This is why
windows placed their start button on the left side of the screen, so the users will find it easier
to find. For example, when you visit a website, you will see the logo and the home page
button on the left side. Whenever we look at something we always look at the left side, this
shows that left side of our brain picks up information faster than the right side. The left side of
our brain actually picks up the information and then the right side of our brain does all the
thinking.
Thats why on a keyboard most of the important keys are placed on the left side of the screen.
For example, Shift, caps lock and esc are placed on the left side of the keyboard. It actually
made it easier for the users to recognize keys by placing it on the left side.

What is ATM?
Automated Teller Machine ATM is a machine that you can put your credit/debit card into the
ATM machine it will ask for your pin and after you have entered your pin it will give different
option to choose from, on the system it will display options like check balance, change pin ,
cash. The text that appears on the screen thats what makes people life easier, you dont have
to be an IT specialist to use it. Its easy to use because you can select everything manually.

KBZ Banks ATM Machine

KBZ bank use red and blue color to mention their logo and ATMs.
Red actually triggers the pituitary gland and speeds up the heart rate, hence causing the
person seeing it to breathe more rapidly. This instinctive response makes red aggressive, lively,
stimulating and attention grabbing. So if one wants to induce a passionate response, the color

red is always a safe bet. One word of caution though red is also associated with danger and
indebtedness.
Blue is the color of the heavens and oceans and brings to mind peace and serenity. It implies
trust, devotion, confidence, intelligence, intellect, faith and truth. It is commonly used among
financial institutions because it is perceived as trustworthy, dependable, secure and fiscally
responsible. Another property commonly associated with blue is cleanliness and hence it is also
often used to advertise products or services which want to portray this feature such as water
related products and cleaning liquids.

Blue brings to mind the skies and the seas. Hence, some airlines, airports, and companies
operating in the shipping industry tend to adopt this color in their brands. Another sector
where the blue color is implemented is the high tech and computing industries due to the fact
that blue is linked to intellect and knowledge. Light shades of blue are often associated with
well-being, health, peace and meditation and hence can be found when looking at spas, clinics,
yoga and fitness centers.

KBZs ATM machine is a machine which allows user to withdraw money with KBZs ATM cards.
Welcome page show their products advertisement to show user. This is the easiest way and
cheaper to advertise your products. You need to KBZs ATM card to put into card reader to
start transaction process.

After you put your ATM card, ATM machine show user to choose language which is their
traditional language to make user to understand and use ATM machine easily. KBZ GUI is
based on blue color. So user can easily know that ATM is KBZs ATM machine easily. Text color
is white. It can see on blue color but it too light.

After you put your card into card reader, ATM show user to input pin code with text and image.
So its make user to use ATM easily. Image show user to press on numbers and make green on

enter, red on cancel and orange on clear which can easily understand the user to use. Green is
allow to press, red is not want to do which you can easily see at traffic light.

After press enter, ATM show user to choose transaction. Withdraw button and Balance button.
This ATM can only make to check balance and withdraw money only.

If you press on withdraw button, you will enter into withdraw page. User have to select the
amount which they want to withdraw. This ATM make user to easy way to input withdraw
amount (example-50000, 100000, 150000, etc...). If you want to input the other amount
which is not show at ATM GUI, you can press on Other button to input your amount.

After you input amount and press enter this page will show user to take receipt and user can
get money from ATM.

If you want to check your balance, you can go by press on balance button and make user to
get receipt by press print button

At card input, They highlight the card holder with green color to notice put card and getting out
card.
Green is a color which is generally linked to nature, peace, well-being and freshness. Different
shades of green however can evoke different emotions. Deeper greens are linked to wealth
and prestige whereas lighter shades of green are mostly calming and peaceful. As opposed to
red, green means safety and it can be used to advertise environment-friendly products or
medical products.

AYA bank's ATM Machine

AYA bank use Red and white color to notice their logo and ATM machine.
White has always been the color which brings to mind cleanliness, purity and simplicity. It is
also associated with light, goodness, positivity, peace, humility and innocence. White can
represent success or new beginnings like birth or marriages in the western cultures.

It is often used in advertising since the human eye sees it as a brilliant color and it helps in
delivering a clear and clean message. Since it has connotations with safety and purity it is
commonly found on medical and sterile products. Thus, it is quite commonly found in hospitals,
clinics, laboratories and also worn by their personnel such as doctors, nurses, surgeons and
scientists. In branding and product design it is often used with infants because of their
innocence and simplicity, medicine and medical equipment, weight loss, diet management and
dairy products as well as technology.

AYA banks use white and black color in GUI. When you put card into machine, ATM machine let
the user to choose language which they want to use and mention Nation Flags for user to be
easy.

After selecting language, let user to input pin number at text box. Text box is showing with
white color to be notice easily for user.

After inputting pin, they wanted user to choose process which they want to do. They bold
buttons to know easy by the users and mark the return card button with red color to warn the
user .

They mark the button for doing process with green color to notice the user . Green is a color
which is generally linked to nature, peace, well-being and freshness. Different shades of green
however can evoke different emotions. Deeper greens are linked to wealth and prestige
whereas lighter shades of green are mostly calming and peaceful. As opposed to red, green
means safety and it can be used to advertise environment-friendly products or medical

The Impact of HCI on Workplace by using ATM card

The impact of HCI on Society
HCI has a huge impact on our society. It made peoples life easier and it also helped us to save
time. It made life easier for the people who are not IT literate. You dont have to know
everything about IT. It makes it easier to use by adding large text and images.
When you put your credit/debit card into the ATM machine it will ask for your pin and after you
have entered your pin it will give different option to choose from, on the system it will display
options like check balance, change pin , cash. The text that appears on the screen thats what
makes people life easier, you dont have to be an IT specialist to use it. Its easy to use
because you can select everything manually.
Deposit machine allows the user to put your cash into your account. It saves time for the client
by letting them do their banking using ATM and deposit machines. If the bank didnt provide
this facility then all the clients will make to line up in the queue and then do their banking. The
screen allows the user to see what they are typing in within the system, on the screen it shows
how much money you have put in and it also shows how many notes you have put in, and if
you think its the wrong amount then it will be allow you to cancel the process.
Self- checkout also helps the customers to save time, for example on a self-checkout machines
you can just scan your product then it will display an option saying finish and pay, if you click
on the button it will give you the option to pay by cash or card, and if you choose card it will
tell you to insert your card into the chip-in devise. It also shows the name on of product you
scanned and displays a picture of the product, which makes it easier for the clients to use.
Some people might not know how to read but the image will help them.

The Impact of HCI on the Economy

HCI has not only effected our everyday lives it has also effected the economy of the world and
how people can make money. In the last few decades technology has changed businesses
drastically. For example 25 years ago shoe makers would have to make their products by hand
and it could take days for them to make one pair. But in these days a shoe maker would only
have to press a few buttons and robots with mechanical arms can make hundreds or maybe
even thousands of shoes a day. However people still do make shoes by hand so the business is
not completely gone unlike some other businesses where the industry has completely changed.
Such as industrial chocolate making, which has changed forever. A few years back workers
would make chocolate and package it by hand but now they use robots to do all of that for
them. Only a few people now need to be making them because all they have to do is work the
computers. With companies using this method it saves them a lot of money because they dont

Page
16

Batch-11
Myat Sett Aung
have to have a huge work force; instead they only need a few workers, it is also easier for the
workers. This is good for the companies but not good for the employees because thousands of
workers are made redundant every year.
ATM also impact on economy. It can make customer to get their money without going to bank
and

Impact of HCI in workplace

Computers are able to increase a users productivity by allowing them to complete task quicker
and more easily. Software can provide the user with tools to accelerate their work process, the
Wizard is a good example of this. The Wizard allows the user to do complex task, quickly and
reliably by following a series of simple steps, whether this is creating a database, collecting
data from a spreadsheet to create a graph or installing programs. Because of the increase in
users (looking for a simple way to use their device) and the number of professionals with the
skills and knowledge to develop HCI's/interfaces, has led to increased competitive cost, as it
takes time to produce an effective user-friendly interface.
When a HCI is being developed, the developer needs to work out how to reduce the amount of
user input that is required. To simplify the amount of effort and knowledge that the user needs
to operate the HCI, by making features easier to access (i.e. less clicks or just one click) to
maintain the users focus and a simple file system to find and open programs, reduces required
user knowledge. Automation is becoming ever more common as users dont need as many
skills to complete their work, but is also cheaper than having skilled employees to do the same
roles or tasks.
One of the main impacts of HCI in the workplace I think is the loss of social interaction
between people outside (customer) of the bank so what I am saying is before of the modern
tech that we have now a business staffs from a bank would has meet face to face with their
customer or client so they would have got and lot of social interaction but now because of all
the modern technologies that we have at our disposal technologies such as video chart where
the staff doesn't actually have to talk face to face with the customer he can talk through the
computer to the customer which is why the workplace loss this social interaction but most
companies use these video chats now because they there are just so much more easier than
actual meet a customer in which you have to set up a meeting time and place in the whole
video chat make life easier for people in workplace who talk to customers.

Page
17

Batch-11

Myat Sett Aung

The Second HCI impact in a workplace that I can think of is trust and yes it does somewhat
link in the loss of social interaction but it is still an impact so what I means in when meeting a
customer face to face for some social interaction you also get a feel for if this person is
trustworthy but not of you will be so will the customer about you and the trust will develop
with these face to face meeting but now with the modern age of technologies emerging you
can use emails and video chat to talk to your customers so starting with video chat yes you do
see them on the computer screen but you just don't feel that same sense of trust through the
video chat like you do when you are face to face next is email well you don't see the person at
all with emails so straight away there's really no sense of that trust you get with being face to
face and this is why less trust in the workplace.

The last impact that HCI has in a workplace is the reduction of cooperation between
professionals yes this does link with face to face and is still an impacts so what I means is
traditional companies work with different professionals with different skill making it easy for
the companies employers to do the thing they can do and not have to worry about the skills
they don't as the different professional would have those skills but nowadays companies that
cooperate with different professionals has been reduced but you might not think this is much
of an impact but as they reduces the increase of concentration for employer goes up and loss
the professional with their skills means the company's employee will have to do what they
were doing in the company and learn that skill if they haven't already in turn this will create
stress for that employee or other employee who have to take up the skill of the professional so
the impact is the reduction of professional cooptation and the increase of stress as employers
take up a professional's skills.
