Standard II: Learner Centered Leadership and Management

Principle 1: Planning: As an advocate for libraries, the librarian leads in the

development and implementation of a library vision, mission, goals, objectives,
and strategic plan that incorporate sound policies and practices.
A. Does not involve students in the leadership and management of the
school library program.
The students are not involved in the leadership and/or management of the school
library program, at least not right now. The library has been neglected because of lack
of human resources (no librarian) and lack of consistency in maintaining the library over
the years. The librarian first needs to get the collection back on track and to collaborate
with the teachers to meet the needs of students in regard to the curriculum before
attempting to include students into the leadership and/or management of the school
library program. Therefore, the rating of below standard was given to Standard II
Principle 1:C. I would like to establish formal channels of communication such as
suggestion box, focus groups, discussion lists, and/or electronic bulletin board on library
issues, but I realize that before all of this can happen I need to start somewhere more
realistic. In the spring semester, I plan on having two class periods with three students
in each period to become junior librarians. I hope that this will be a start in getting
students involved in the leadership and/or management of the school library program.
In the spring of 2017, we will start a junior librarian elective class to assist the
librarian in the daily operations and management of the library program. A total of six
students in the eighth grade will be chosen. The students will be chosen based on
attendance, academic performance, and discipline. Three students will report to the
library during 7th period and three students will report during 8 th period. The junior

librarians will perform tasks to assist in the daily operations of the library programs such
as checking in/checking out books and shelving. The junior librarians will also assist in
the changing of the bulletin boards to reflect how the library program is assisting in the
curriculum and instruction. Occasionally, the junior librarians will be required to read
certain books and prepare book talks for the student body. Throughout the semester,
the junior librarians will meet with the librarian to discuss issues regarding the library
programs, services, and resources. At the end of the semester, the junior librarian
program will be evaluated by librarian and administration as to the effectiveness of the
program. The junior librarians will also be asked to fill out short questionnaire based on
their experience in the junior librarian program.

General Information
Description
The purpose of the junior librarian is to give students the opportunity to contribute to the
daily operations of the middle school library. Under the supervision of the librarian, the
students will perform basic tasks such as checking in/checking out books, shelving, and
putting up promotional reading displays and bulletin boards on a regular basis.
Occasionally the students will also give their opinion and/or input on books that should
be considered to a part of the collection. Students will also be required to read novels
and give book talks on those novels. Inventory will also be completed with assistance
from the students. Students will also participate in student leadership activities.

Expectations and Goals

The "junior librarians" are expected to have excellent attendance and are to arrive at the
library and be ready to learn before the tardy bell rings. They will learn the Dewey
Decimal Classification System so that they will be able to shelve books accurately,
effectively, and efficiently. The students will also learn how to check in/check out books
to the students under the supervision of the librarian. In addition to the daily operations,
the students will be required to read one novel every three weeks and prepare a book
talk report to share with other students. Inventory will be completed in a timely manner
with the assistance of the students.
