Unit Title: Chemical Reactions

Name: Maribel Trejo

Content Area: Science-Chemistry

Grade Level: 10th grade

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

HS-PS1-4 Develop a model to illustrate that the release or absorption of energy from a chemical reaction system depends upon the
changes in total bond energy
HS-PS1-5 Apply scientific principles and evidence to provide an explanation about the effects of changing the temperature or
concentration of the reacting particles on the rate at which a reaction occurs.
HS-PS1-6 Refine the design of a chemical system by specifying a change in conditions that would produce increased amounts of
products at equilibrium.
HS-PS1-7 Use mathematical representations to support the claim that atoms, and therefore mass, are conserved during chemical reaction
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
Big Ideas
Energy is neither created nor destroyed.
Mass is neither created nor destroyed.
Substances can combine or change (react) to make new substances and predictions can be made of chemical reactions.
Unit Goals
Students will be able to connect the relationship between chemical reactions and important biological and geological phenomena.
Students will be able to identify unknowns of various chemical reactions based on the outcome of the reaction such as temperature
change, precipitation, color change, etc.
Students will understand how bond enthalpy and the conservation of energy in a reaction coincide.

Unit Summary:
In this unit students will learn about chemical reactions and be able to explain the three big ideas. First students will take an online survey
to see how well they have retained their knowledge of various chemical reactions presented to them in prior science classes. Then a
lecture will be given on the six different types of chemical reactions accompanied by some guided notes. After students will be put into
groups and will take turns playing with interactive games and simulations to help them better understand the concept. They will also help
one another comprehend bond enthalpy how to calculate H, and how to draw bond energy graphs. Next students will be collaborating
with new students to create a thinking map/graphic organizer to answer the question: How can important biological and geophysical
phenomena be explained on the basis of chemical reactions? Lastly students will be instructed on how to properly conduct a lab and
submit a lab report concluding their findings and answering the three main concepts of this unit stated above.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
1. Survey on chemical reactions in
order to tap into the students prior
knowledge.
2. Teacher lecture with guided notes to
help students understand the six
different chemical reactions

Formative:
1. Webercise on different topics related
to chemical reactions: balancing
equations, limiting reactants,
molecule bonding, and bond
enthalpy.
2. Graphic Organizer will show the
connections between chemical
reactions and natural phenomena.
3. Quizzes will be given after students
complete guided notes, webercise,
and graphic organizer.

Summative:
1. Lab Report will test the students
scientific knowledge by performing
a hand on experiment.
2. Test will be half multiple choice and
half written.

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective:
Students will be able to
categorize and
differentiate chemical
reactions.

Lesson 2
Student Learning
Objective:

Acceptable Evidence
(Assessments):
Students will fill-in
their guided notes and
create their own
example to recall the
six different types of
chemical reactions in
order to make sure they
have acquired the
knowledge to be fully
prepared for a quiz.

Lesson Activities:
Students will actively listen and participate in an introductory lecture on the six
different types of chemical reactions. Students will also have guided notes to follow
along and keep up with the material. The guided notes have a wide range of variety
activities from answering questions to fill in the blanks to help them better remember
the material. Most importantly the guided notes offer a space for students to be able
to come up with their own way to memorize a certain equation. In doing this,
students will better learn and understand the different types of chemical reactions,
and be well prepared for their quiz.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will use

Lesson Activities:
Students will work in groups of about four to five students and complete a webercise.

Students will be able to

better grasp different
concepts related to
chemical reactions in
order to calculate H.

Lesson 3
Student Learning
Objective:
Students will be able to
take a step back and
look at the big idea by
comparing two
different phenomenas
and answering a
driving question.

provided websites to
complete a webercise to
help them understand
important concepts
including bond
enthalpy.

This is an online assignment that introduces them to online interactives, games and
education videos. First students will do chemical equation interactives in order to
help them understand products, reactants, and leftovers. This interactive has some
balancing equations problems, but they will not entirely cover that until the second
interactive on this webercise. Next they will watch a video about bond enthalpy and
take notes as well as do a practice problem. Lastly they will have more practice
calculating H and understanding the importance of bond energies. Also there is
questions in between sections to help to students think critically as they go through
this assignment.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will create an
online graphic
organizer providing
pictures and
explanations on the
process using chemical
reactions.

Lesson Activities:
Students will be asked to complete an online graphic organizer/thinking map that
will answer the question: How can important biological and geological phenomena
be explained through the process of chemical reactions? Students will be given
various topics, both biological and geological, and asked to organize their thoughts
into three main categories. The first is explanation, in this part of the organizer they
are to list three different boxes containing facts and/or examples. The second
category is the visual part of the assignment where they display pictures. Last they
explain the chemical reactions that are occur to make the phenomenas of their chose
happen.
