Swimming
Championship
The Hancock Family Medical Foundation
Pilbara Championship (HFMF) 2016, was
held at the Newman Aquatic Centre on
25-27 November hosted by the Newman
Amateur Swimming Club. This Swimming
WA sanctioned event is one of only two
held in the Pilbara, so is an honour for our
town to host.
The championship attracts swimmers
of various age groups and abilities from
eleven towns across the Pilbara, Gasgoyne
and Kimberley regions.
The Newman Amateur Swimming Club
hosted an amazing weekend for the whole
Newman community, all the athletes, their
families, and great supporters.
The Newman Amateur Swimming Club
expresses its sincere thanks to HFMF,
Swimming WA, Shire of East Pilbara, FMG,
Piacentini, Newman Vets Assoc., Coates,
Dunnings, Newman Woolworths, Dirty
Grotts, Newman Lions Club, Programmed,
BHPB, Victor Sterpin, Newman Playgroup,

the amazing local volunteers for helping

make the event a positive and supportive
environment for all the clubs, swimmers
and families who attended.
The competitive Gold and Silver squad
swimmers, train five days a week and
complete approximately 20 ks a week for
8 months of the year. They are an amazing
group of positive young role models who
also buddy and support the Bronze and
Junior squads on a daily basis helping to
inspire upcoming champions.
This would not be possible without the
dedicated volunteer coaches, Lisa Parker

and Tracy Ehrenreich, who are on pool

deck more than 20 hours a week. With
their skills and knowledge plus the support
provided by assistant coaches, Newman
Swim Club Committee, Parent Committee
and phenomenal volunteers, they stand
proudly as a supportive team and member
of the Newman community.
Fantastic results were seen throughout the
weekend especially the many new junior
swimmers creating a time to goal set with,
and the senior squads beating their PBs
and qualifying for Country Champs held in
Perth in January 2017.

Pink Ribbon High Tea

By Nicole Willis

On a lovely Sunday afternoon in October,

the ladies at the Newman Visitor Centre
held a Pink Ribbon high tea. With 77
ladies and one gent in attendance, the
afternoon held plenty of laughs. Rachel
Roe impressed all present with her role as
Master of Ceremony during the afternoon.
She did not miss a beat the entire time and
kept the afternoons activities flowing.
Speaking with Barbara and Rachel after the
final tally was counted and the donation
sent in, they said how blown away they
were by the overwhelming support from
the entire community, with donations for
prizes and raffles still being dropped into
the Centre moments leading up to the start
of the event.
The Visitor Centre would like to make special
mention of the generous donations by
Captain Jacks Coolroom Hire, Woolworths
and Newman Mainstreet Project Inc. While
these three were the biggest supporters,
over 30 businesses, party planners and
private donors dug deep to provide prizes
for the afternoon.
Games were played that had the room
in hysterics such as Boobie Bingo, how
many names can you list for Breast, and
Pin the Nipple on the model (aka Gareth
Richardson). What is a fun afternoon
without a quiz on Newman trivia to cap off
the afternoons frivolity?!
Food and drinks were in abundance, with
many attendees purchasing take home
packs to share with their family and friends
who were unable to be at the event. The
delicious catering provided was a joint
effort between the staff from the Newman
Visitor Centre and volunteers.
The afternoon raised $2,590.95 for the
Breast Cancer Foundation. Barbara

ODriscoll, Manager of the Newman Visitor

Centre, said that she had only received
positive feedback about the event and
will look into the possibility of holding
other such events. She said there are
many causes that we can support as a
community.

So keep an eye out, Newman, for all

their new logo and promotional material
becoming more visible in the community. It
is the plan of the committee to be trading
as Red Desert Events from 2017 onwards
and they are very excited for the future
ahead.

This event was followed by their special

Christmas sale evening aiming to encourage
the shop local campaign for Newman
businesses.

Red Desert Events is

Coming
By Nicole Willis

Come 2017, Newman Mainstreet Project

Inc. will be transitioning to their new name;
Red Desert Events. The name change came
as a result of recommendations in a 2012
business plan. The determination of the
name was made over two years and almost
three committee member combinations
with the perfect name finally decided
earlier this year. It highlights the core
business of Newman Mainstreet Project;
events and hire.
Since commencing in 2001, Mainstreets
role within the community has been to
deliver community events and showson-the-go. In order to bring about these
events, Mainstreet relied on funding from
various bodies to cover partial or complete
expenses, with little to no profit made from
these events. Therefore, Mainstreets main
income is generated from equipment hire
and fundraising at community events such
as markets, letterbox drops, raffles and
advertisements placed in the Newman
News. They can also assist in planning
private events and set up of those events.
Any profits support the wage of their one
employee and keeps the non-for-profit
operational as it has for the past 15 years.

Radio for the

Community

With the recent invigoration of Newmans

community radio station 6NEW early this
year, came a retrospective look at what
programs were previously entertaining.
6NEW first went on air in March 1979
with 26 residents who were trained as
announcers.

Community groups and individuals have

been very supportive of the radio station
through donations and sponsorship. Local
businesses including the Capricorn Bar and
Grill and Newman Home Hardware were
long term supporters of the station. The
station seeks sponsors wishing to advertise.

Craig Hoyer presents a Saturday morning

football show including local junior and
senior results along with other sports
between 10 am and 12 noon. He has been
doing this for over 14 years and continues
to do so. Tune in to 92.9 FM. A new
weekly show, the Newman Community
Show airs each Monday evening from 6
pm. With a different host each week, the
show introduces the different not-forprofit organisations, clubs and community
groups that make up the Newman
neighbourhood. NfPs may advertise their
community events free of charge and
are encouraged to email the station on
newmancommunityradioinc@westnet.

BHPB Family Day

families of residential and FIFO employees

facility.

either ingestion through the mouth or nose

or contact with the skin.

It was fun for everyone to see where family

members work. It was great time for all
and was a lovely gesture by BHP Billiton to
allow the morning to happen.

Mosquitoes are common near the dam and

may be carrying Ross River Virus or Murray
Valley Encephalitis Virus which are harmful
to humans

The day began by families checking in at

the gate house where the children were
given their very own hi-vis orange BHP
Billiton shirt so they could look like Mum or
Dad. Then all families were allocated a bus
and the adventure began.

The bus convoys first stop was the main

administration build, there the families
got to look at various machines; loader,
excavator, dump truck, dozer. The site
Emergency Service Officers (ESOs) were
on hand to give a demonstration of the
various emergency service vehicles and
equipment. It was at this point the kids got
to wet ESO, Michael Bond, who was in a
Hazmat suit and took the full force of the
fire hose in good humour.
While inside the building the Lions Club
cooked a barbecue for everyone and
the children were able to participate in
some art, play out in sand pits with little
diggers, or get their faces painted. Many
superintendents led by example on this.
From the administration building, the
bus convoy continued up to the White
House which overlooked the pit and
where production of the pit used to be
coordinated before this role was moved to
the Perth office. The White House has a
great view of the pit as well as the crusher
and rest of the mine.
During the drive around and through
the hub, crusher, beneficiary plants, the
children got to see dump trucks dumping
their loads of ore into the crusher and

The dam is actually owned by BHP Billiton

and is part of active mining operations.
A recent BHPB brochure states that
Ophthalmia Dam is located in a drinking
water catchment and the underlying
aquifer which Ophthalmia Dam recharges is
utilised for the extraction of groundwater.
Several parties are involved in the
management of the water quality including
BHPB, Shire of East Pilbara, the Department
of Health WA, and the Water Corporation.
In order to protect the water source, fauna
and flora of the area, and the safety of you
and other users of the dam, guidelines
have been put in place. There are inherent
risks when it comes to water bodies so be
careful of all children and other users when
at the dam.
The brochure states that there are common
risks associated with Ophthalmia Dam:
Physical hazards
Heavy rainfall and rapid increase in
water flow and water levels
Rips and currents
Shallow water and submerged objects
Uneven and slippery surfaces.
Contaminants and organisms
Ophthalmia dam water is prone to
contamination by a range of viruses,
bacteria, toxic algae and other harmful
microorganisms. These water contaminants
can cause harm to human health through

The viruses mentioned can have long

term health implications. Newman News
has previously written several articles
about the various diseases and prevention
methods. Here is a brief list of a few simple
things you can do:
Avoid outdoor exposure around dawn
and early evening
Wear protective (long, loose-fitting,
light-coloured) clothing when outdoors
Apply a personal repellent (there are
some natural methods too) to exposed
skin or clothing
Remove stagnant water sources where
possible
Flooding poses an additional risk. If there
is a risk of flooding, a broadcast message
will be conveyed through the local radio
network.
The brochure asks that you adhere to the
following guidelines for your health and
safety.
Permitted activities:
Kayaking / canoeing
Scenic appreciation (e.g. bird watching)
Walking and picnicking within the
permitted public access areas around
the Dam
! Always watch your footing when close to
the waters edge
! Always cover up with clothing and apply
insect repellent
Not permitted:
Swimming (to avoid immersion / direct
contact with the water)
Surfing
Water skiing
Diving
Fishing
Motorised boating
Camping
Alcohol consumption

recreational area, please contact the East
Pilbara Shire on 9175 8000 or the BHP

Runners Let Their Mo

Grow
The Newman Running Club, started by Zee
Rijkuris who is a FIFO worker, is motivating
others to support Movember and raise
awareness of its cause. Plus, it is a great
chance to grow some interestingly styled
moustaches. Running is one avenue for
improving general health and mental
health issues. This social exercise group
for people of all abilities was created and
began on the first of November to help
promote this.
The Movember Foundation began in 2003
aiming to help stop men dying too young
through supporting research and health
initiatives and has now expanded through
21 countries. Some of the biggest causes of
premature death in men include prostate
and testicular cancer, and suicide.
Zee was impelled to start the running club
here due to the impact health issues have
had on his life. He started battling Hodgkins
Lymphoma as a teenager and has since
been a supporter of cancer research. He
lost his father-in-law almost two years ago
to what he says was an entirely preventable
cancer. If he had not been so scared to talk
to a doctor and seek help, he could still be
alive today, Zee said.
Having only reclaimed his own health and
fitness a few years ago, he wanted to share
his passion for running with others. His
running habit has seen him complete the
Tokyo Marathon in 2015 which he says is
proof that if I (he) can do it, anyone can.
The Newman Running Club meets every
Tuesday and Wednesday night at the
fitness station on Fortescue Avenue by the
corner of Ethel Creek Street at 6:35 pm.
They start the run/walk at 6:45 pm. They
welcome all runners and walkers of all
speeds and fitness abilities offering 2, 3 and
4 km return tracks for those who want to
get into it, and longer tracks for those who
want to push themselves.

Zee encourages people to support the

Newman Running Club through Movember
by donating to:
http://moteam.co/mo-runners or donate
a gold coin on the evening run/walk. All
proceeds go to the Movember Foundation.
Donations are most welcome despite
November being over.

Ole Grandads Ice

Cream

By Jesse Hamad through the eyes of a relatively

new town resident

Newman is great place to live; if you can

handle the heat!
In this small town of metal roofs and red
dirt, there is really only one name you need
to know: Ole Grandads Ice Cream.
Paul Foster is a 21 year native of Newman
who loves the town he has adopted as
his home. For the last three years, he has
been dispensing soft serve ice cream from
a bright pink ice cream van at events and
throughout Newman neighbourhoods to
the delight of young and old alike.

Bogan Bingo
By Lynda Langlands

Bogan Bingo was held on Saturday 19

November to raise money for Ivys Army.
Ivy Steel is an amazing little 6 year old girl
from Hamilton in Victoria who is battling
cancer for the third time. Her last chance
now of survival is to receive treatment in
America which will cost her family in excess
of $400,000.
There was an amazing turnout with 165
people at the Newman Club dressed as
Bogans. Fun and games besides the bingo
included an air guitar competition, and
Newman King and Queen Bogan being
announced.
Thanks to the Newman Vets Football Club,
Newman Club, Shire of East Pilbara, and the
Newman Hotel for their financial support.
Thanks also to Grenelda Services and Maria
Cournane for their donation.
Everyone enjoyed a fantastic night of
laughter and dancing. An amazing amount
of $4,235 was raised on the night.

Paul, or Grandad as he likes to be called, is

extremely fond of his home and neighbours
saying, Newman is such a giving place.
The best bloomin place in the world! and
what about his decision to set up shop here
as the Ice Cream Man? ... [it was] the best
thing I ever did in my life!

pancreatitis, where the bodys pancreas

begins to auto-digest itself. Even with
prompt and aggressive medical treatment
this condition can be fatal. In some patients,
pancreatitis can then lead onto permanent
diabetes.
Some of the common signs of pancreatitis
in pet dogs can include lethargy, loss of
appetite, vomiting and abdominal pain;
which may be manifested as shaking or
trembling, tense abdomen, hunching, and
or yelping when being touched. Pancreatitis
is best treated early, but ideally prevention
is better than a cure. To help keep your
furry ones safe this Christmas, make sure
you educate your friends and family about
the dangers of feeding pets Christmas leftovers.
Stay safe and Merry Christmas from the

Bushfires
Sausage Season

By Dr Lucy van der Weide BScBVMS

Veterinarian, Newman Veterinary Hospital.

The suns out, the pool is beckoning, and

the Webber is cranking. It is that time of the
year again where we engage in Christmas
shin dings, end-of-year parties and, well,
barbecues because why the hell not!
Our furry friends may delight at this
opportunity to haggle a sausage or some
left-over chops. It may seem like a harmless,
loving and fun thing to do, but I strongly
urge all pet owners to resist the temptation
and avoid feeding their pets BBQ scraps.
At the Newman Vets we see a spike in
cases of gastroenteritis and pancreatitis
every year around the festive season.
Many of these patients require afterhours treatment, blood tests, admission
into hospital for intravenous fluids, and
expensive treatments. It is not just fatty
left-overs; bones, corn cobs and barbeque
skewers can become lodged and stuck in
the intestines necessitating emergency
surgical removal. Even onions can be a
deadly snack to both dogs and cats. We
also treat dogs and cats every year for
serious burns to their paws after jumping
up onto the barbeque plates.
Unfortunately, our pet dogs (and cats) are
simply unable to digest fatty meat properly
and are extremely susceptible to a painful
and potentially deadly condition known as

Bushfires are a fairly common occurrence in

the Pilbara given our extreme temperatures
and wide open areas where fire can speed
through.
The Department of Parks and Wildlife
undertakes prescribed burning throughout
the year to help limit damage done by
natural fires, such as those caused by
lightning, and those caused by humans;
not just arson but also vehicle accidents
as recently experienced near Auski
Roadhouse.
In winter, DPaW carried out over 250 kms
of edging along public roads, rail lines and
infrastructure in the Pilbara. They also
treated 150,000 hectares of land with
prescribed fire mainly with aerial ignition
from a helicopter, the majority of this was
in Millstream and Karijini national parks.
Further burns are planned for the Karijini
NP in Dales camp ground and the visitor
centre this summer. DPaW are waiting on
decent rains to occur and when tourist
numbers are very low. Further prescribed
burning may occur in summer.

When planning an excursion or travel, it is

important to check out and monitor
conditions through DFES, DPaW, and Main
Roads.
https://www.emergency.wa.gov.au
Should you be caught unaware on the roads
and tracks, it is essential that you follow
directions given by emergency services.
Driving with your headlights on also assists
with road safety as other cars, cattle and
people may be there. If you pull over, leave
your headlights on so that you can be seen
by others.
It helps to be carrying enough water should
there be unexpected delays or extended
routes that need to be taken.
If out camping, it is important to determine
in advance the fire danger rating to
see whether it is safe enough to light a
campfire, and there are then numerous
things to think about besides what cut of
meat to take.
Fires can change quickly in speed and
direction with impact from wind and other
factors. Smoke can extend much further.

Keep safe. Stop, think and prepare.

What can we do to protect ourselves and

property from bushfire damage?
Even in town and surrounding areas,
house and land preparation can reduce
the likelihood of fire damage. Part of this
includes cleaning gutters, getting rid of
garden waste, and reducing general rubbish
around your property. The Shire of East
Pilbaras annual verge collection helped
residents with this and this year resulted in

Enduro Club
The Newman Enduro Club held a club
fun day out with camping at the Sylvania
Station in mid-November. Bush riders of all
ages and experience enjoyed the weekend
which offered a controlled environment for
family and friends to ride.
Enduro is described as a form of motorcycle
sport run on courses that are mostly offroad. Enduro consists of many different
obstacles and challenges. This fun day was
just that!
