During our next unit of study, you will read one piece of American Fiction that explores the idea of the
American Rebel. For this assignment, you will be expected to read both inside and outside of class. You will
choose from the following: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Twain), The Catcher in the Rye (Salinger),
Fahrenheit 451 (Bradbury), or X (Shabazz).
Although your teacher has limited copies of each book for students to check out, the best way to ensure you
get to read the book you really want is to obtain a personal copy.

Earning Your Grade

Participation (20 points per Reading day)
We will have daily activities that give you the opportunity to discuss what you are reading with a
partner or small group. We will use the Hot Seat activity, Stop, Plop, and Roll, and an
Independent Reading Interrogation.

Exit Tickets (25 points per Reading day)

You will be given a bookmark with a series of questions. Each day, you will pick three questions to
answer on your Exit Ticket.

Reading Conferences (Double quiz grade)

You will have one reading conference with me. In our reading conference, we will discuss what you
have read so far. This is the where I check your progress to make sure you are on schedule. You will
lose points if you are behind on your reading schedule. The conference will count as a double quiz
grade (x4 in the grade book).

American Rebels Reading Log Booklet

Throughout the unit, you will be completing a log book that asks you to make analytical connections
to at least one character in the book as well as other characters we will study in this unit. You will
finish the booklet by completing a series of choice activities based on your book. YOU WILL
RECEIVE YOUR BOOKLET ON THE THIRD READING DAY.
