Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
Authority and Respect and how Daniel achieved these through prayer and dedication to the Lord
Briefly describe the context of your lesson. How long have students been studying this particular topic and/or how does it tie
into a unit?
Students look further into how we can pray and look at yet another example of someone in the Bible who had courage and has
prayed in a different situation
What are your objectives for this lesson? Indicate connections to applicable national or state standards.
(If an objective applies to only certain students write the name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies.)

Students will understand the terms of respect and authority
Students will think and analyze situations in which people are put in authority over us and how we should act (worldly and
biblically) towards those people
Students will brainstorm what respect and authority is and what it means to them
Read the story of Daniel and interpret and analyze how Daniel may have gained so much respect during his lifetime
Through the story of Daniel students will see when they can pray and how they can pray.

II. Before you start
Life of Daniel, definition of respect and authority. What is prayer and what have we learned
about it?

I will assess my students by having them write down their own thoughts about
respect and authority. And then come up with examples of who has gained respect
and who has authority over them.
I will assess my students by listening to them respond to how we should act towards
Assessment
other people who have authority over them
(formative and summative)
I will ask read responses and listen to questions about how they think Daniel
received so much respect.
I will assess by what they updated in their faith journal

Multiple Means of Representation

Multiple Means of Expression (Action)

Multiple Means of Engagement

Options for Perception

Provide concrete objects such as books,
handouts, and paper

Options for action/interaction

Students will be going through the bible
looking a different verses and students
will be creating a poster and presenting it

Options for Language/Symbols

All words or symbols in lesson should be
understandable. But we have access to
dictionaries and chromebooks.

Options for Expression

Students will be giving a report on a few
bible verses. Students can talk, draw, or
could do a skit

Options for recruiting interest

Another lesson in prayer. Students will
have a few options as to what they will be
creating on poster.

Options for Sustaining Effort &
Persistence
Students will present poster so they will
have to create one.

Options for Comprehension

Throughout the lesson I can pause and
reflect on what is being taught. Different
question strategies will also be used to
check comprehension and to assess for
other questioning to gain a students
better comprehension.

Options for Executive Function

Students know the objectives of the
lesson and what they will need to create
as a poster. They will see others present
and can gain ideas for their presentation.

Options for Self-Regulation

What students gain or learn will be
assessed at the end of the unit. So at the
end of each lesson in this unit they have
time to journal about what they have
learned.

Materials-what materials (books,

handouts, etc) do you need for this
lesson?
Technology utilized?

Faith Journals, Bibles, pencils, pens worksheet (pg 177), student textbook

Do you need to set up your

classroom in any special way for
this lesson? If so, describe it.

Devotions

What is respect? Take out a piece of paper and jot a definition done.
How do you gain respect? (a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important,
serious, etc., and should be treated in an appropriate way)

What does God say about respecting people in authority? (God says we should respect and obey
anyone who is in authority over us)

Who are some authority figures? (teachers, coaches, parents, pastors, etc.)
Is there any time where God might allow us to disobey those in authority? (The only times we may
disobey authority is if they are asking us to do something that violates Gods law.)

your lesson

Noted to the class that, Daniel had a lot of respect going for him. He had already gained the
respect of his captors because he showed respect.
Call on a student to read page 89-93 in the student text.

Ask the students, how do you think the other high officials felt after Daniel was promoted to
nd
2 in command? (angry, jealous)
Read Daniel 6:6-10 ask the following questions
o What did the other officials do to try and get rid of Daniel? (create a decree that will
kill anyone who prays to anyone but the king.)
o What was Daniels response to this decree, Knowing that he would be condemned
for praying to God? (he went to his room and still prayed 3 times a day to God)
o What does verse 10 tell us about the way in which Daniel prayed following the
decree? (He prayed three times a day, on his knee, facing his open window.)
o How did Daniel feel about prayer? (It was a vital part of his daily routine; he was not
ashamed to pray)

Daniel throughout his whole lifetime respected and obeyed officials above him. But in this instance he
disobeyed his authority.
Why do you think Daniel disobeyed now?
What does this show us about Daniel? Why would he follow and obey his entire life and then
now choose not to?
(Daniel concerned about obeying those in authority over him, until such obedience
threatened to interfere with his commitment and relationship to God. For Daniel, God always
came first.)
Read page 92 in student text book.

What is the take away from our look into Daniels life?
We must follow God and obey Him as our first priority. God asks us to respect and obey all
those who have been placed in positions of authority over us, unless doing so would interfere
with Gods laws. Daniel only disobeyed when things conflicted with Gods commands.
Prayer establishes a relationship with God in which we can expect miracles. When we pray
continually and consistently God will hear us and answer us in His way.
Prayer takes commitment. if we make prayer a priority in our lives, we wont let anything else
get in the way of our meeting with God.

In your faith journal Write the word Commitment. Using this as your trunk write a prayer using the
word.

Date this entry and update or add to your knowledge of what prayer is.

What about your lesson went especially well? What strategies were effective? Did the students learn what you intended them to
learn? What specifically would you change if you were to teach it again?
I thought this lesson went pretty well. We had a good conversation going about respect and how we should respect others,
especially those who are in higher positions of authority. We started talking about the election which I did not want to do

because most of my students have strong biases towards one candidate. But in the end it turned out okay in the sense that
whoever would be our next president they were respect the position that that person held. I was trying to stay away from this
kind of talk because many of the comments from my students are not wholesome. I asked questions in relation to the school
atmosphere, teachers, parents, pastors. But overall the conversation was mostly respectful towards others. I was very
impressed with the connection the student made with the story of Daniel. The students understand that Daniel was in a foreign
land and should have hated his captor. The students realized and made the connection on their own, without my help that even
if this was the case Daniel still showed great respect and this respect got him further in his life and accomplished Gods purpose.
It was very effective to keep the pace of the lesson moving and keep throwing questions out about what students had said. This
limited their time to stray and go off-topic.
