In this lesson we will look at David and how he prayed. He has so many examples found in the bible and we know a lot about his
life as well. This is the eighth lesson on prayer. Students are continuing to define what prayer is and how they should pray.
What are your objectives for this lesson? Indicate connections to applicable national or state standards.

Students will explain what prayer is and how we should pray.
Students will be able to identify and explain the structure of Davids prayers and how he writes them.
Analyze Davids Psalm writings so that they can write their own about their life.




II. Before you start
Knowledge of prayer how we should pray and when and what we should pray for.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills. Reading

I will assess my students by having them write down about how they should pray
according to what the bible says. They will write in their faith journals and at the end
of the unit will write about all that they have learned.
Assessment
I will assess my students by asking to identify different statements in Davids Psalms
(formative and summative)
and ask them to respond to what he asks for.
I will assess my students by reading the prayers they write according to the structure
and phrasing that David used.

Tell me about prayer: how do we do it? What do we say when we pray?

Take your Bibles out and look through the book of psalms.
Ask students,
What do you notice about the Psalms? Do they look like any other book of the Bible?
Who wrote them?
Skim through a few and tell me what they are about?
What do they talk about it? Wants needs?
Read Psalm 5:3
When did David set aside time to Pray? (Morning by morning; probably early morning)
What notes do you read at the top of Psalm 4 and 5? (Psalms written to accompany
instrumental music)
What does this tell us about some of Davids prayers? (Included Music or were intended for

music) (What does this tell you of David? Think back to when he was a good friend with
Jonathan, King Sauls son, Do you remember that David played the Harp?)

Closure

Note to the students that David often wrote Psalms in response to his life. He often wrote a Psalm as
a prayer to God. Asking God for help, thanking Him for who He is, and how awesome and powerful He
is.

In 2 Samuel 13:23-15:37 we find that while David is King one of his sons kills his older son so that he
could be king. Absalom fled from David because he feared that David would kill him. After about three
years David wanted to see his son again. While away Absalom created followers. His followers grew in
number and soon become a good-sized army. Most of Israel started to follow Absalom and not David.
A messenger came to David and warned him of Absaloms plot to kill David so that he could seize the
throne. David fled and wrote a Psalm about it.

Read Psalm 3 and make a list of statements David made.
These three statements about Davids distress and then find the corresponding line that David find
faith and assurance in the Lord.

Model one for the students

-How many are my foes. (David defines his distressed)
-But God is a shield around me, he lifts my head (David was assured; he trusted God)

After the Hebrew poetry Pairs David changes up his style of writing.
Ask, How does his writing style change? What does he write? (verse 7 and 8)
Now, he declares his confidence in God ability and willingness to deliver David his distress.

What are the statements of confidence that David writes?
God strikes down his enemies
He has broken the teeth of the wicked
The Lord brings deliverance and blessing

Using What we just learned let us write our own prayers like David did.

Write three statements about the troubles you are facing. For each statement then write three
statements showing your confidence in God that he will deliver you from your troubles. Write this
prayer in with your other comments about prayer.

As we have seen with so many people: Jacob, Hannah, Daniel and now David what can we ask for
when we pray?
Anything, we can confess out sins, what is troubling us
God is there to always listen to our every need. He can take a load of weight off of our minds.
Our focus should be on Him in all things that we do.

Update your prayer Journal on your idea of prayer. What did you learn today? What has been
reinforce about prayer?

What about your lesson went especially well? What strategies were effective? Did the students learn what you intended them to
learn? What specifically would you change if you were to teach it again?
Students participated well on this lesson. I asked for volunteers and most of the students participated. The students dived into
the questions and analyzed the psalms before they answered. They made great connections between different lines in the
psalms. They even wrote their own poetry pairs that correlated with their own life. Students identified poetry pairs which was
my objective along with explaining what, how, and why David wrote them. If I were to do this lesson again I would change it so
that I explained and modeled all of my questions. I am working on this still, but I need to model things in such a way that
students can pick up on them and then complete their own examples. I do not want to give answers away because I know they
will continue ask for more examples like this so they do not need to do the work. Will of course continue to ponder and ask how
I can be more effective in my presentation.
