Instructional Objective
After completing a lesson on equivalent expressions, the students will evaluate expressions with
100 percent accuracy.

Key Concept
The students will evaluate expressions to determine if they are equivalent.

Standards and Indicators

Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the

reasoning.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.REI.A.1

Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the equality of numbers
asserted at the previous step, starting from the assumption that the original equation has
a solution. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method

Motivation
I will ask the students to give a real life example of equivalent expressions that they have
encountered in their life. This will make the lesson personal to each individual student.

Materials
Worksheets, Smart Board

Strategies
Cooperative Learning: This will be evident when the students work in pairs in order to determine
if expressions are equivalent. The students will work with each other to complete the exercise
given to them.
Direct Instruction:

This will be evident when I directly review what the students have already learned about
variables and expressions including the different types of properties.

Independent Work:
This will be evident when the students are working independently after they complete the group
activity. The students will complete an exit ticket on their own that I will collect to assess the
students.

Adaptions
For the 2 ELL students, I will constantly check for understanding and give them copy of the class
notes at the end of the class. For the student with ADHD, I will have the student come up to the
board to answer questions so he has the chance to get up and move around.

Differentiation of Instruction
Tier 1: After completing a lesson on equivalent expressions, the students will evaluate
expressions with 100 percent accuracy. The students will receive help from the teacher if needed.

Tier 2: After completing a lesson on equivalent expressions, the students will evaluate
expressions with 100 percent accuracy.

Tier 3: After completing a lesson on equivalent expressions, the students will evaluate
expressions with 100 percent accuracy. The students will also be asked to explain their
reasoning using words.

Developmental Procedures
Students will be given expressions in which the students will be asked to identify which property
is being used. (Which property is being used in this example?)

Students will define and tell the teacher how to determine each property. (What are the different
types of properties? What are the steps when distributing?)

Students will work in groups of 2 to determine if expressions are equivalent. (How were you able
to determine these expressions to be equivalent?)

The students will complete an exit ticket for me to assess their understanding.

Assessments
The students will be assessed by their ability to determine if expressions are equivalent. At the
end of class, they will receive an exit ticket that will be collected and returned to them the next
day so the students can see where they made their mistakes if there was any. I also will assess
the students throughout the class by going to each group to see which students need more
assistance.

Independent Practice
At the end of class, the students will receive homework problems that are similar to the problems
done throughout the class. This will help the students receive more practice while also acting as
an assessment tool for the teacher to find out which students need more practice on this subject.

Follow-up: Direct Teacher Intervention and Academic Enrichment

Direct Teacher Intervention: The student and the teacher will work together on the worksheet.
Afterwards, the student will try completing some equations on their own so the teacher can see
that they are understanding the information.
Academic Enrichment: The students who want to be given a challenge will receive a worksheet
to take home that has difficult questions that we would normally not cover in class. The students
will have to use critical thinking and problem solving to find a solution for the problem.
