HW13

1. A 1-in diameter, 5-in long cylindrical wooden handle is attached to a frying pan. The hot end of the
handle is at 275oF while the cold end is at 100oF. If 1.1 Btu/hr heat flows along the axis of the what is
the thermal conductivity of the handle material?
Area = (/4)(5/12)2 = 0.00545 ft2. x = 0.4167 ft.
Q = 1.1 Btu/hr. = kA(T /x) = k(0.00545)(175/0.41676)
k = 0.48 Btu/ (hr.ft.oF)
2.

To the wooden handle (5-in long, 1-in ID) of problem # 1, another 1-in long (same dia) section was
added. Heat flow rate is still 1.1 Btu/hr, but the combination handle (of 6-in length) end temperatures
are now 275o F and 83oF. Calculate the new section materials thermal conductivity.
R = T /Q = (275-83)/1.1 = 174.6 oF-hr/Btu
R1 = (x1- x2)/(Ak1) = (0.4167)/(0.00545*0.48) = 159.1

k2 = 0.99 Btu/ (hr.ft.oF)

R2 = (x2- x3)/(Ak2) = (1/12)/(0.00545*k2)

3.

R2 = R - R1 = 15.5

Water is to be heated from 15 C to 65 C as it flows through a (3 cm ID and 5 m long) tube. The tube
is heated by an electric resistance heater. Determine its power rating if the water flow rate is 0.001m /s
and there is no heat loss to the surroundings.

Oil (Cp = 2150 J/(kgK) ) enters a 2.5 cm I.D. / 3cm OD tube of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger at
20 C with a mass flow rate 0.3 kg/s. It is heated to 50 C by steam condensing at 120 C (latent heat: hfg
= 2203 kJ/kg) in the shell. If the overall heat transfer coefficient is U = 500 W / m 2K (based on the
inner surface of the tube), determine the length of the tube required. What is the minimum mass flow
rate of the heating steam?

5.

Consider an oil-to-oil double pipe heat exchanger whose flow arrangement is not known.
Temperature measurements indicate that the cold oil enters at 20 C and leaves at 55 C, while hot oil
enters at 80 C and leaves at 45 C. Do you think this is a parallel flow or a counter flow heat
exchanger? Why?
Answer
o

Counter flow exchanger because at the exit the oil being cooled down has a lower temperature than the oil
receiving heat.

6.

0.10 ft3/min of water is to heated from 50oF to 100oF as it flows through the inner tube (1-in ID)
of a double pipe heat exchanger. 0.25lbm/s of hot water at 200oF enters the outer pipe and flows
counter-current to the cold water. The overall heat transfer coefficient based on the inner tube is
100 Btu/(hr-ft-oF). Calculate tube length. Note that Q = UATmean and specific heat of water is 1
Btu/lb/oF. Please draw a diagram and indicate your Ts on the diagram.
