Biology Extra Credit

Nobel Prize has long been known as a priceless award, and the scientist,
virology or biologist, coming from a variety of classes in society, has discovered
things to contribute on the development of the world and save humans life. With
Virology called Harald zur Hausen, a man who has worked for years in order to
discover a virus which cause cervical cancer, which will help us to make a longer
step to find the treatment and medicine or even vaccine for that.
Personally, I think its right to choose this discovery to be awarded Nobel Prize
due to a large number of people that this discovery has saved. First, I would like to
discuss about Mr.Zur Hausen life and carrier first.
Zur Hausen was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, went to the Gymnasium in
Vechta to study medicine at the Universities of Bonn, Hamburg and Dsseldorf and
received a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1960 from the University of Dsseldorf,
after which he became a medical assistant From 1983 to 2003: he was a
chairman and scientific director of the Management Board of the German Cancer
Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. 2003: he became an emeritus professor
and then since 2010: he is a vice-president of the European Academy of Cancer
Sciences until now.

His work was led to the introduction of a vaccine to combat HPV in 2006. It
took him two years to discover the virus that causes cervical cancer. As far as I am
concerned, I think, his work also bases on other discoveries that other scientist had
worked before, therefore, with his discoveries, all of them have worked together to
create a discovery of virus, which causes cervical cancer. Due to some authorized
resources, Zur Hausen has moved to a deeper level of treating cervical cancer, and
now he is working to create a vaccine for this cancer.
Cervical cancer is a cancer arising from the cervix. It is due to the abnormal growth
of cells that have the ability to invade or spread to other parts of body. At first, there
is no symptom, which is the same as other cancers. Later symptoms may include
abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or pain during sexual intercourse. While
bleeding after sex may not be serious, it may also indicate the presence of cervical
cancer. Some researches reported that there were 266,000 people dying of the
cancer out of 528,000 cases of this illness. Cervical cancer causes 8% death of
people who suffer from cancer. In some low-income countries, this illness is the
most common cause of cancer death. However, in some high-income countries,
thank to the development of the cervical screening programs, there has been a
dramatically reduced of the people getting cervical cancer. Moreover, cervical
cancer will also create some health problem on children if they are given birth by
people who are suffering from the cancer. In my view, its one of the most
dangerous cancers because it creates bad effects on both mother and children.
In my opinion, there is only one way to apply is to save women from facing with
this cancer, but, if we just say, help them from this cancer, we will see that it is so

normal. But if we look deeper, we will see that each year, there are 266,000
women, wife, mother are saving from the death. We have known that this cancer
can cause a woman from have a child, or even killed them. But, for me, I think
figuring out the virus is the first step to make vaccine and then, eradicating that
disease, which we just have done with smallpox and other illnesses.
In conclusion, there will be no word that can express what this discovery has done.
But, we know that, this discovery has built the foundation, the first step to save
women from this illness.
