N479 Leadership Management Shadowing Activity Form

Your Name: Lauren Powell

Date of Activity: 9/15/16

Faculty name: Beverly Bias

Who did you shadow (add their credentials too)

I shadowed Jeni Ahring, RN.
Role of this leader and where do they practice? (Be specific)
Jeni Ahring is a SWAT Nurse at Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.
She spends most of her time in the Emergency Department and responding to Rapid Responses.
She makes rounds throughout the hospital and carries a phone to respond when someone calls for
assistance. She also helps nurses who struggle putting in IVs. She performs ultrasound-guided
peripheral IV placement, which is used for many emergency department patients. This procedure
uses ultrasound to visualize and cannulate a peripheral vein, which improves the likelihood of
success with the potentially difficult procedure of IV placement. Additionally, she helps other
procedures that may be difficult for some nurses such as Foley catheter placements. In other
situations, Jeni Ahring provided teaching and coaching to nurses who are developing their own
expertise with particular nursing skills such as working with a Swan-Ganz line or starting an
insulin drip. She also provided an extra set of hands when the workload increased on one of the
critical care units.
Discuss the benefit and value of this experience to you (Be specific).
This experience was very beneficial and of value to me. Shadowing Jeni Ahring exposed
me to great patient care. Jeni Ahring applied her knowledge and collaborated with all team
members to provide patient care and safe outcomes. For example, before one of the intubation
procedures, Jeni Ahring gathered all necessary equipment, supplies, and medications. This
demonstrated great time management and organizational skills and allowed the intubation
procedure to occur in a timely manner. Also, watching her delegation process benefitted me
because I am still working on this skill.
Would you recommend this specific shadowing experience in the future; why or why not?
(Describe why or why not)

I would definitely recommend this specific shadowing experience in the future because I
learned about the challenges that could happen in the healthcare setting and witnessed the Rapid
Response process. I also learned more about exceptional communication skills and its
importance. For example, one of the patients was having a panic attack and Jeni Ahring used
therapeutic communication in order to calm the patient down. I was very impressed because she
was able to calm the patient within a minute. Jeni Ahring also made the shadowing experience
really fulfilling and exciting.
Business card obtained/attached? Signature on validation of clinical hours form obtained?
I have received Jeni Ahrings signature on the validation of clinical hours form.
