Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Mathematical Robots

Name: Jennifer McNutt
Group Size: 26 Students working individually

1 Elementary Subject Area:

Students will have an excellent learning experience with the subject of

Mathematics while using geometry based skills.

2 CCSD Curriculum Standards: (recommended grade 2)

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.1

- Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a

given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. 1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals,
pentagons, hexagons, and cubes found at : http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/2/G

3 Objectives:

Students will understand the importance of shapes in everyday life. They will
have a new understanding in that they are not something that you just you in
math class. They are used to build things you see every day from houses to
bridges to in this case robots. Furthermore, they will have a new
understanding in how two shapes can work together to form a bigger,
possibly different shapes. There are shapes all around us.

4 Materials/Equipment:

Construction paper (4 different colors per student 2 full sheet and two half
sheets) , scissors, glue, markers, glitter, colored pencils/ pens, crayons,
buttons, bottle caps, rulers, erasers, smart board/overhead projector for
demonstration , Math teachers manual for reference, Student Math text book

5 Procedures:

Begin with discussion. Ask students where that have seen shapes in the
outside world ( pies, pizzas, bridges, houses, ect)
o Carry on by asking about how many angles a triangle has a circle?
What about a square or rectangle. How many faces dose a cube have?
Where have you seen a cube? Where have you seen a pentagon (home
plate)? Shapes make up the world. They are everywhere. Where would

we be without them
o Carry this discussion on for about 20 min
Instruct students on making of the robot project.
o Students robots should consist of 4 different shape : circle, square,
triangle, rectangle
Students can use more shapes and of different type but the four

above are required

Instruct students to take their full sheet of colored paper to glue their

robot on
The other sheets can be used to create the body, head, arms, legs and

knobs and buttons for their robots.

Students can directorate their robots with markers, colored

pencils/pens, crayons, buttons, and glitter

Instruct the students that rulers and bottle caps can assist in drawling

the shapes needed (remember how many angles each has).

o Let students work on projects for around 30-40 mins
Once the robots are complete they will be displayed around the room

6 Closure:

In closer I want each student to tell the class about their robot. What is each
shape they have included? What dose each do when pushed or turned? What
is each students robots name and purpose in the world? Tell me what have
you learned today from your project and what we have discussed?
