My philosophy of nursing is to preserve and restore the fundamental needs
that all humans innately require via the collective action of holistic efforts focused not only on the patient but also the family and the community. Through the integration of values such as caring, accountability, respect, and integrity into my practice, I will devote myself to the attainment of the highest quality of life possible, while simultaneously preventing the degradation of health for all people I interact with. Nursing is a profession in which your practice is your signature, meaning that it is a stylized depiction that is unique to each individual. When you place your signature, you are confirming your identity as well as your intent. Over the course of the last two years, I have had the opportunity to develop my own identity and signature within my practice through education, and clinical experience. Through the attainment of education from school in combination with emulated behaviors of those nurses I grew to respect and admire, I have developed a practice which is cognizant of not just the body of the patient, but also the mind and the spirit. Nursing is just about as unique as each person that you come in contact with. This means that a nurse must be dynamic and stray away from the cookie cutter routine and develop a practice that incorporates the person for all that they are and that in which they believe in. Many people classify nursing as a science, speaking that the degree one gets when they pursue the field of nursing is a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. However, through my experience, nursing is just as much of an art as it is science. It is an art in the sense that each patient requires their own, tailored care plan that addresses all of their needs in the most fundamental way. This includes seeing the patient for all that they are and all that they stand for and believe in. Nurses must examine their own beliefs and fully understand how they feel towards each patient to even begin to comprehend the needs and desires of each person they serve. When it comes to how I view nursing as a career, I see it as an opportunity and not just an obligation. It is an opportunity to continually improve myself through the achievement of satisfaction through patient interaction, the improvement in patient condition, and through the achievement of lifelong education. To me, nurses serve as a lifeline for individuals during what one would argue to be one of the most negative times in their life. As a lifeline for another human being, they have granted you their trust by placing their lives in your hands to help restore them to the highest quality of life attainable. In order to maintain this level of trust and achieve the objective as a nurse, I will devote myself to professional development through continual education, keeping up to date on evidence based research, and achieving additional certifications.
