HE.3.P.7.7: Self Management - Demonstrate the ability to practice advocacy, health-enhancing

HE.3.P.7.2
Investigate a variety of behaviors that avoid or reduce health risks.
Essential Question is: What foods do I need and how much of each should I have?
Type of lesson: Conceptual Understanding
Assessment:
Summative: Putting together a semi-perfect meal plan for a day
(include a tool or data youll gather)
Formative: Class circle puts their name and a food from their assigned food group into a giant
bowl and passes around to make a full and balanced meal. Then, each student must define
which group the list of foods written down on a sheet and turn it in as the menu.
(include specific ways to measure and document progress)
From this activity, children will be able to see what their peers think makes a good meal and use
their collective creativity to both learn teamwork and get ideas of their own through thoughtful
processing.

Learning Objectives
Objective(s): 1. Identify the food groups
2. Categorize the food groups
3.Compare and contrast foods and/or food groups
4. Identify healthy portions
5. Assemble a healthy diet guideline
Prior Knowledge: 1.Students must be able to understand simple terms of protein, dairy, and
fats
2. Students must be able to differentiate between groups
3. Students must understand practicality in their choices, and understand the plate is not a
concrete idea.
Complexity: While some students might have parents more conscious of health and nutrition or
parents in the medical field, other children may not even understand what the nutrition labels
are for. Some students may be familiar with the allergen parts of the label, while others may

need to watch the carbohydrates and sugar content for the purpose of their diabetes or other
medical dilemmas.
Vocabulary: Children must understand food group sectors and nutrition label terms such as
calories and fats
Instructional Design Framework:

Differentiation: The children will need to work in small groups, assigned different portions of the
plate to each student at the table and assembling a proper meal.

They will also be offered paper portions of said foods, using processing differentiation to piece
them together through hands-on learning. Last but not least the product they produce will be
assessed by a rubric based on what the children have learned as a whole from the activities.

Technology Integration
