UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

The Mythology lesson is part of a unit covering how to determine the meaning of words as they are used
in text including mythology as described in the common core language arts standard 4.4.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given a computer, TLW will accurately complete the myth research handout after researching their chosen
mythological story to demonstrate a clear understanding of vocabulary words found in mythological text.
Using their research and toondoo.com, TLW create a cartoon that displays their chosen myth with a score of 4
out of 5 on the rubric.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text,
including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology (e.g., Herculean).

Teacher example for the comic strip

Technology will be integrated by using the smartboard to play the YouTube video and by allowing each student to use a
computer to research their chosen myth and to create a comic strip that illustrates their myth.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of words found in myths by providing new
vocabulary words and their meanings onto their hand out and creating a comic strip for their
chosen myth.
The critical academic language that must be addressed in this lesson is research and mythology.
This lesson is a continuation of Common Core Language Arts Standard 4.1
We will refer to the cartoons created in this lesson as we continue to explore myths and the vocabulary found in
myths.
Differentiated activities/ assessments need to be planned for in order to make sure each student has what
they need to learn the content being covered. A visually impaired student may need some of the
assignments in braille and a scribe to complete some of the days assignments. Students with IEPs for a
writing disability will need to be assigned a scribe to help them complete the work. A hearing-impaired
student may need to sit closer to the front of the class to hear or read better and the instructions for
assignments. For students with IEPs for a speech disability, they will not be required to answer questions

aloud in class and they will be given a student whiteboard to use to communicate with the class and the
teacher.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:

TTW: Today we will continue studying vocabulary in mythological text. Does anyone like
comic strips? (Give students time to answer.) Well, today you will get to create a comic strip
that displays an aspect of the mythological story you chose in our last class, but first we will
review one of the myths we learned last class by watching this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKMrPV81gyo

Provide a brief review on the Greek myth about Cronus eating his children and Rhea hiding
Zeus so that he is not eaten.

Show the teacher example for the comic strip and explain that this is what the students will
do after they research their myths.

Procedures:
Before computers: (5 minutes)

After the introduction TTW distribute the myth research handout.

When the students receive their handouts, they will fill in the information for numbers 1
and 2.
After they have finished the beginning of the handout, TSW be assigned to a computer.

At the computer:(35 minutes)

TSW use a search engine to find 5 websites that have information about their story.
TSW record their findings onto their handout
When the student has found 5 websites and they have completed the handout, TSW go
onto http://www.toondoo.com and begin making a comic strip for their chosen myth.
TSW print out the finished comic strip

After the computer:(15 minutes)

TTW ask each student to present their comic strip to the class and explain how it relates
to the myth they chose.

Closure:

At the end of class, the teacher will take up the handouts and the comic strips for assessment. In
addition, the teacher will ask the students for feedback or if anyone has questions concerning the
lesson.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

Formative Assessment: The students will turn in their mythological story worksheets for assessment. In
addition, the teacher will also assess the students cartoons using the rubric.
There will be no summative assessment for this lesson.
The formative assessments relate to the objectives because the research activity will display the students
understanding of vocabulary found in mythology and meanings. In addition, the comic strip helps
students use the new vocabulary found in the text outside of simply reading it.

MODIFICATIONS:
With the teachers help, the students who did not master the objectives will form research groups and create a
project displaying a myth that is assigned to the group.
Students who are ready for enrichment activities will move on to understanding vocabulary found in poetry by
using the same worksheet, but documenting and researching a poem instead of a myth.
