Instructional Procedure/Activities
Part one: Morning
Activating Strategy:
Teacher will play a video, Letter Sounds by Jack Hartmann:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQB7gpDpt6o
Teacher will place the letters on the board and perform the chant we do during
student of the day. Give me an F (students respond with F). Give me an A (students
respond with A). Give me an L (students respond with L). Give me an L (Students
respond with L). What does that spell? Student should respond with Fall but if no
children can read the word then the teacher will call on Shaina to read the word. (She
has been tested on a letter G book)
Teacher will ask students to raise their hands and give a fact about Fall.
This is a web and we can use this to organize our thoughts. We can use this
oval to write our topic. A topic is the thing that we are talking about. So what is our
topic?
Students should answer with Fall. Teacher will have already written out five
categories to discuss; trees, sports, clothes, weather, and birds.
I have thought of some things that are different in the Fall lets read them. We
have trees, sports, clothes, weather, and birds. Since Clifford is our class pet I am going
to read Cliffords First Autumn.
Read Cliffords First Autumn by Norman Bridwell:
- Front page: Why do you think I chose this book, Cliffords First
Autumn? Students will have the chance to answer the question. If no one can
make the connection between Autumn and Fall the teacher will discuss the
connection. Autumn is another name for Fall. They both describe the same
season. So you can say it is the first day of Autumn or you can say it is the first
day of Fall.
- Title page: Norman Rockwell is our author. What does an

author do again? (Students will respond with The author writes the book) I
dont see another name on the book so that means what? (Students will respond
with He writes the book and draws the pictures).
- Pg 1: So it is summertime. Lets look at the background. What
color are the trees? (Students will respond with green) Also what is Emily
wearing? (Students will respond with sandals, shorts, etc.)
- Pg 2: Point out the birds on the ground.
- Pg 3: See all of the different fruits that we have in the summer. I
see plums, kiwi, peaches, and clementines. In the summer we see many
different fruits because we can grow more in the summer.
- Pg 4: What noise do you think Clifford is hearing? Why is the
radiator making that sound? Answer: The heat is being turned on. Some
houses have a radiator that heats the room instead of just having vents. Why do
you think the heat is being turn on? (Students respond with It is cold outside)
Teacher will point out that the weather gets cool in the Fall.
- Pg 6: What do you notice about this page? Answers: You can
see the leaves falling and Cliffords breath.
- Pg 8: Im going to go back in my text. Lets look at the Summer
picture again. Flip back to pg. 8 Now tell me what is different about the
trees. (Students should respond with They are orange, purple, yellow, and
green.) That is on our web. Another thing on our web is clothing. What is
Emily wearing now? (Students will respond with jacket, hat, socks, etc.)
- Pg 9: Why couldnt Clifford chase the birds? Answer: They
are flying south to stay warm. Point to birds on the web.
- Pg 10 & 11: Now what do we see outside of the store?
Answer: Apples and Pumpkins. They are the fruits we see in the Fall.
- Pg 15: Is there anything on this page that we can add to our
web? (Students might say that windy can be added to the weather section of
our web) If the students do not make the connection then the teacher will point
it out.
- Pg. 17: They are raking leaves. Do any of you help mommy or
daddy clean up the leaves?
- Pg 21: They are playing football. This is something else that we
see in the Fall. Where can we put this fact? (Students will respond with sports)
We learned some fun facts about Fall. But my favorite part about Fall is the
fruit. What fruit do we usually see in Fall? Answer: Pumpkins and Apples.
Before school starts, the teacher must hide the letters all over the room. There
will be 20 letters hidden around the room. One for each of the 16 children and four for
the adults in the room. 6 letters will not be hidden and come into use later in the lesson.
I went around the classroom and hid some lowercase letters around the room.
What are the lowercase letters again, are they big or little letters? Answer: They are
little letters.

After lunch we are going to be letter detectives and find them. But first we
have a few other things we have to do.
Part two: After lunch
Teaching Strategy:

What are the lowercase letters again, are they big or little letters? Answer: They are
little letters.
We are going to be letter detectives. But first we need to know what is
expected behavior. We need to quietly go around the room, because detectives are
always quiet, and find one letter. How many letters are we finding? (students will
respond with one) When you have found your one letter come back and sit quietly. I
am going to count to three and then everyone will get up quietly and find their letter.
One, Two, Three!
Summarizing Activity:
When all of the letters are back: I am so happy we were able to find all of our
letters. We cant just leave our letters laying all over the place. How can we organize
them? Is there an order that they are always in? Students should point to their
resources in the room and tell the teacher to put them in that order. If the students do
not do this then the teacher will point out the resources. Teacher will ask for students to
bring up their letters by calling out the sound. Example: Who has the letter that makes
the sound /t/. If students are struggling with this I will ask the students to bring me up
the letter t.
If a letter is called that no one has I will ask the students to tell me what letter it
is, come up and pick it out of the pile that was not used, and add it to our ABC chart.
Students will go recite the ABCs along with the song that is played. Teacher
will point to the letter.
