The goal of this lesson is for the students to describe legacy and culture of the major
indigenous settlements of Tennessee.
This lesson is a continuation of TN social studies standard 4.1
Students will use a Web 2.0 tool called Slideshare, which students will share their
information and ideas with one another. Students will also create a cartoon of the lesson
by using Toondoo.com.
I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for the students who did not master the
objectives and those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in
this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
Begin by introducing the Web 2.0 Tool SlideShare and Toondoo.com to the students and provide how
Procedures:
Prior to the Computer (5 minutes)
Teacher Procedures:
After a brief introduction, have students open an Internet browser to find information about the legacy and
cultures of the major indigenous settlements in Tennessee. Once students have researched and found all of their
information, the students are directed to open MS Word and place all of their information into MS Word and
save their information as a Word document. Then students will be directed to use SlideShare and Toondoo.com
to display their information.
Student procedures:
1. Open an Internet Browser
2. Find information about the cultures by using the websites listed in the Materials section.
3. Open MS Word and save information about the cultures, and save the information as a Word document.
4. Open SlideShare and Toondoo.com
At the Computer (45 minutes)
Teacher Procedures:

1. Open MS Word and Internet Browser
2. Go to websites listed in materials section and copy the information from the websites
3. Go to MS Word and paste the information into a new document
4. Add the following title: Early Tennessee indigenous settlements and cultures.
5. Below the title, Insert 4 column and 9 row table
4. Add the following column names: Settlement, Culture, Picture, Why Picture
5. Cut and Paste the name of the battles into the table
6. Locate an image
7. Use pull-down to copy the image
8. Go to Picture cell in the Word document
9. Paste the picture
10. Write why you selected the image for the battle
11. Save work
12. Repeat items 7-13 for the remaining battles
13. When all battles are completed, check for errors
14. Print a Copy
After the Computer (40 minutes)
Teacher Procedures:
1. Place students in groups of 5
2. Ask students to pass their work to the right.
3. Students will review the work and take notes of any additional information from any of the battles, then
pass their work to the next person.
4. Give students 15 minutes to discuss any additional information.
5. Have students write a reflection of the assignment.
Student Procedures:
1. While in a group, students review each others work and note any additional information on any of the
battles.

Closure:
Students will volunteer to give their thoughts on the assignment. At the end of the class, the teacher will collect
the assignment and check for assignment submissions, and ask the students questions of the assignment.
