Preface: questions: I think whats working well with my paper is I feel like I have all the research
but I dont know how to set it up. I feel like my paper is unorganized and needs a lot of shaping
up to do. I need to focus on making my paper a lot organized. I also feel like my paragraphs need
to flow better into each other. If I had two more weeks, I would like to improve on more detail
about the space exploration missions and better my research. I have learned that from this inquiry
project focusing on your topic is important. I have also learned that a paper can always use work
and its never 100% done.
Future Living and Expectations
1.

Growing up in America I have always heard on the news or from various people
that NASA was where scientists and Astronauts learned about space. All I have ever
known about space is that Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were the first people on the
moon. I never grasped or even asked about what they discovered. Having no knowledge
on the space program I began to become curious. I started to think, why is it necessary for
NASA to spend money on exploring the Galaxy?

2.

The Voyager 1 was sent out thirty-six years ago to help scientists find the
unknowns about space. To this day the Voyager 1 still sends signals so that scientists will
receive key information about the universe. Also NASA has rovers on Mars unlocking
hints that could possibly show proof of life, not only on Mars but around the whole
galaxy (How Space Exploration Propels Scientific Discovery, Tourism, Mining, and the
Economy). By doing this, it will increase our chances of finding new depths of the galaxy

that we have never studied before, thus opening up more discoveries to new technology
and medicines. People have always questioned what the space program does and how it
benefits us. For example, some have wondered should exploration focus on Mars or
asteroids that have potential to devastate Earth? The answer to this would be both,
economic and environmental benefits of exploration (How Space Exploration Propels
Scientific Discovery, Tourism, Mining, and the Economy). Scientist study Mars because
it once was a wet and warm planet, but now it has turned into a dry and desolate planet.
This change keeps scientists busy on figuring out why this is happening so it doesnt
occur to our planet. This can help us understand our climate behavior which is looked at
with our satellites (How Space Exploration Propels Scientific Discovery, Tourism,
Mining, and the Economy). To stop the asteroid side of the question, NASA has a risky
mission to capture an asteroid and put it in orbit around the moon to study its behavior.
According to Darrell M. West, If the mission turns out well, it could represent a
prototype for future economic enterprise (How Space Exploration Propels Scientific
Discovery, Tourism, Mining, and the Economy). Success of the mission will help more
space programs flourish, so they can stay afloat and find new discoveries.
3.

NASA has been focusing most of their time on finding life on other planets.
Although it is not for certain that life on other planets exist, NASA is working diligently
on finding planets that are capable of supporting life. According to Marcia Clemmitt,
thousands of other orbiting stars have been confirmed since the late 1900s, which means
that new unknown planets are not far away from discovery. NASA has recently found a
new planet that is announced to be 17 times the mass of Earth. Unlike most heavy
planets, this planet is not made out of gas or ice but mostly dense rock. This tends to lead

to a better chance that life is on it since life is usually sustained on hard surfaces (Search
for Life On New Planets). Having a new found planet can open multiple doors to human
society, not only the finding of new life. With the help of the International Space Station,
multiple vaccines, medicines and other societal advancements that can benefit human
existence can be discovered.

4.

I never thought that that the International Space Station (ISS) or NASA could
have such an impact on the future of human society. According to astronaut Ron Garan,
The research on the orbiting laboratory is not only enabling humans to explore the solar
system, it is leading to countless improvements for life on Earth. For example, space
based science offers an environment to foster new materials, better medicines, improved
methods to provide clean water, and better ways to grow enough food to feed our
increasing global population (Why Spend money on space exploration when we have so
many problems here on Earth?). This shows that NASA is trying to make a valiant effort
to help the human society flourish on Earth. NASA believes that their progress in space is
not only helping to find new medicines and sorts, but theyre also able to study the
astronauts physical condition while in space which enhances understanding of the human
body (Why Spend money on space exploration when we have so many problems here on
Earth?). The ISS has come a long way in advancing society, and its gives unlimited
opportunities for space exploration to have no boundary for findings of new discoveries.

5.

Space exploration offers advancements in society other than medicine. For

example, it can allow us to potentially redo our whole way of interaction. In the early

Lanoix

space exploration missions, it exposed the world to global positioning,
telecommunications, and advancements in the way we could predict weather (Benefits
Stemming from Space exploration). Since the beginning of space exploration, there has
been multiple societal benefits that have kept the human race safe and out of harm. In the
near future, while traveling the galaxy, we could become knowledgeable of new
discoveries of materials, power generation and energy storage, recycling and waste
management, advanced robotics, transportation, engineering, and computing and
software. Also, these new innovations will improve space systems services because they
will have high performances and lower costs. Something that is benefitting our society as
we speak is that in the year 2020 the International Space Exploration Coordination Group
(ISECG) will go beyond the low earth orbit (LEO). This will require a development in
more robotic advancements. According to the International Space Exploration
Coordination Group, they say, The next ten years will be essential for building the
global partnership required for achieving the ambitious goals of space exploration
(Benefits Stemming from Space exploration). They believe this is true and will benefit
our society because they will have to partner with other countries through the ISS, which
will cause for unity and alliance between other countries. Having more unity and
alliances will boost economics and foreign policy.
6.

The beginning of space exploration has created many technological advancements

in health and medicine. These advancements have led to the creation of Light-Emitting
Diodes or (LEDs), which are growing plants in space that help humans on Earth. LEDs
are used in the front lines of war for minor injuries and pain. Space traveling has also
helped create air conditioning for airplanes in the sky. NASA anti-icing systems helped

create Thermawing. This powers air conditioning for a single engine on an airplane
(Spinoff). Also, the space program has helped people with amputated legs walk again by
the creation of the prosthetic leg in the early 2000s. It was created by robotic sensing and
actuation capabilities for use in NASA. Later, they adapted it to where amputees could
wear them (Spinoff). These are only a couple of new advancements NASA helped create
to benefit life on Earth through new discoveries in space.

7.

NASA uses their explorations to help society grow and prosper. Space vehicles
with sensor embedded materials are designed to tell you if something is damaged. It is
used in bridges to make sure that if a bridge is damaged it will let someone know so that
they can fix it and no one will get hurt (Voyages). NASA uses a variety of gadgets that
help everyday society. Many people dont realize, but NASA is responsible for a lot of
positive things that have happened on Earth without anyone ever hearing about it. NASA
keeps everyone on Earth safe, and I believe that NASA should remain doing space
exploration if it means finding new medicines and other advancements to help human
society.
