DEC. 7-13, 2016

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at Dickens Fest

Residents have plenty

of ways to donate
during the holidays
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
Tis the season for giving.
While many people get to enjoy
the holidays with food, music and
in the company of friends and
family, others are not so fortunate. For this reason, Medford
residents should consider donating to a variety of local businesses and organizations that are
helping to spread holiday cheer.
The Orthodox Church of the
Holy Cross, located at 11 Wilkins
Station Road, is engaged in its annual collection of items to fill 50
Christmas stockings for the
Covenant House in Camden. The
filled stockings will contain hats
and gloves, toothpaste and brushes, deodorant, shampoo, lip balm,
razors, hand lotion and other
products that can help homeless
youth. For more information, call
the church at (609) 654-4865.
The Medford Historical Society
is taking part in the Toys for Tots
program, and has a drop box located at Columbia Bank at 133
Route 70. The Pinelands Branch
Library and Milton H. Allen Elementary School will also have

Residents encouraged to be
aware of drug addiction dangers
The first-ever Surgeon Generals Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and
Health has brought to light the
alarming fact that more than 27

million people in the United

States reported current use of illicit drugs or misuse of prescription drugs, and more than 66 million people (nearly a quarter of
the adult and adolescent population) reported binge drinking in
the past month.
In this 2015 report, substance
use disorders affected 20.8 million
Americans almost 8 percent of
the adolescent and adult population. That number is similar to
the number of people who suffer
from diabetes, and more than 1.5
times the annual prevalence of
all cancers combined (14 million).
Of the 20.8 million people with a
substance use disorder in 2015,
15.7 million were in need of treatment for an alcohol problem in
2015 and nearly 7.7 million needed
treatment for an illicit drug problem.
Medford Township is not im-

mune to this crisis. In 2016 alone,

Medford has suffered four overdose deaths, and public safety
personnel and family have administered at least 12 Narcan
doses to reverse the effects of an
overdose.
Opiate, heroin, alcohol and
other drug misuse and related
disorders are major public health
challenges that are taking an
enormous toll on individuals,
families and society. Neighborhoods and communities as a
whole are also suffering as a result of alcohol and drug-related
crime and violence, the increased
costs of health care associated
with substance misuse, and the
increased cost to Medfords police, fire and EMS departments
who are called out in response to
overdoses.

Police provide online protection

All departments should help online buyers and sellers with safe zones

s the holiday shopping season

is now officially underway, police departments across the
country are on high alert. Thats because, at this time of year, unfortunately, criminals are everywhere looking to take advantage of unassuming
shoppers who are just trying to enjoy
the season.
The criminals go out to malls, downtown shopping areas and other retail
hotspots just like the rest of us but
they, instead, are after the goods were
buying, and the cash and cards that
were carrying.
Its scary. And its sad. But its a reality of the world in which we live.
With online shopping as prevalent
as it is, and especially with peer-to-

peer sites such as Craigslist so commonplace, were glad to see that local
police departments are stepping in to
help the honest shoppers as best they
can.
Local police departments have recently begun to make a program available to the residents of town called
safe zones some with areas inside
of the police department building and
some right outside, where people can
conduct legal peer-to-peer transac-

tions. The locations are often equipped

with security cameras that will record
all activity in the zones, 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. The launch of
safe zones are timely, of course, with
these types of transactions becoming
more popular at this time of year.
Police departments play a huge role
in making people feel safe. Their job is
not just to pull drivers over and arrest
criminals.
We couldnt be happier about the
safe zones programs in towns that
offer it, and we urge police departments in other towns to offer similar
programs. If other towns do offer the
safe zones program, please remind
your residents of it, and urge them to
use it.

Transportation Alternatives Program

Grant sought by Medford town council
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
Main Street in Medford is home to a variety of businesses and annual community
events. To help further the streets economic development and to improve its
streetscape, town council applied for a
State Transportation Alternatives Program grant.
According to township manager Kathy
Burger, the township planner, Taylor Design Group, attended a seminar discussing
this grant earlier in the year. The planner
then brought up the idea to apply for the
grant to the township staff, which then presented it to council.
By applying for the grant, which was en-

dorsed by the Burlington County Board of

Freeholders, the township is hoping to receive about $600,000 to improve the road
from where Main Street meets Route 70 to
where it intersects with Mill Street.
According to Beth Portocalis of the
township managers office, the intended
municipal improvements would consist of
finding ways to expand pedestrian and bicyclist traffic and safety. She said the goal
is to make Main Street an attractive destination for residents and visitors alike,
rather than it simply being a centrally traveled road.
This effort began a few years ago when
Medford developed a bicycle network plan,
a circulation system designed to attract increased numbers of people to downtown
Medford and other destinations within the

township. Through this earlier initiative,

the township received a separate $300,000
grant from the state under its Transportation Enhancement Act for the 21st Century
grant program, which it will use next
spring to begin construction on its transportation transformation along Stokes
Road in the preserved Cow Point open
space.
As further part of this transformation,
sidewalk enhancements designed to repair
the original brick sidewalks that were constructed in the early 1980s has remained a
priority. Another goal is to retrofit and enhance Main Streets existing antique lights
to establish better lighting and electrical
access for the many events held on Main

Allen School Giving Tree, providing food and clothing to needy
families.
Nurse Sharon Conway and the
Chairville Outreach Committee
at Chairville Elementary School
has coordinated a food drive and
a Giving Tree and is participating
in the Pemberton Toy and Coat
Drive that supports families in
Burlington County. At Cranberry
Pines Elementary School, nurse
Karyn Reilly and teacher Rina
Cardenas are overseeing the
school's toy drive in conjunction
with Seneca High School.

Similarly, nurse Leah Quinn of

Kirbys Mill Elementary School
has coordinated the Kirbys Mill
Giving Tree which is providing
gift cards from local merchants
including
Target,
Walmart,
Shoprite, Murphys Market and
Acme for local families in need.
The school is also hosting a
glove/hat/sock drive to benefit
the
Wiley

in
Camden, which serves cognitively impaired low-income older
adults.
The Haines Sixth Grade Center's student team 6-2, under the
direction of teacher Alison Murphy, has focused their servicelearning project on the organization One Warm Coat to provide
outerwear to local families in
need. This is a nationally registered charitable drive, and there
is a donation bin located outside
the school for drop-offs.
Similarly, St. Mary of the
Lakes Schools Mission Club, an
after-school service-based club,
holds an annual toy drive for

Catholic Charities. It collects new

and unwrapped toys for a donation to Catholic Charities. The
school also collects items for families in need and donates them to
the St. Vincent De Paul Society in
Medford. This is an annual tradition, as is having students make
Christmas cards for senior citizens that are distributed at various local senior centers.
Aside from toys and other
goods, residents can also choose
to donate blood. Sponsored by the
Medford Lakes Lions Club, a
blood drive will be held on Monday, Dec. 12 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The event will take place at Oaks
Hall, located at 1 Cabin Circle in
Medford Lakes. First-time donors
are welcome, and appointments

Council hoping grant

aids local economy
COUNCIL
Continued from page 6
Street. The township also hopes
to achieve streetscape uniformity
through acquiring matching
benches, trash receptacles and
bike racks, and to improve signage to highlight places such as
the community center, municipal
building, arts center, library and
parking.
All of the signs and street
amenities would have the same
style, Portocalis explained.
Most of the time, when we pick
things up for the town, there hasnt been continuity in ordering.
Weve also had a lot of donated
benches, but this uniformity
would involve a plan.
The township would use identified circulation patterns on Main
Street to know where benches,
signs and bike racks should be
placed.
Portocalis also explained that
once these elements have been
implemented, new businesses
could flourish. She gave an example that with a new caf, offering
benches and tables could encourage people walking up and down
the street to sit and relax for a few
minutes, while also encouraging
them to shop at the local businesses allowing Main Street to

become its own destination within Medford Village and Medford

Township.
Although Medford is not modeling its Main Street transformation after any other town, Portocalis said she believes the town is
inherently blessed to have historic and walkable downtown
Main Street available, and that
being a part of the Main Street
New Jersey program is helping
with its marketing and business
recruitment efforts. She also said
town council has been instrumental in helping to strengthen
Main Street through amending
several ordinances to facilitate
commercial business on the
street. For example, it voted to
change a sign ordinance to allow
for easier-to-read signs and
amended an ordinance allowing
breweries to produce and sample
craft beer.
We hope to sustain a lively, engaged Main Street community.
We want people to travel from
outside of Medford for space,
while also increasing local resident traffic through increased
pedestrian traffic, Portocalis
said. Town council definitely
wanted to pursue this opportunity and the availability of the
grant.
The township will receive notice sometime in the spring as to
whether it is awarded the grant.

Celebrating the most

wonderful time of the year
LINDSEY NOLEN/The Sun

Medford held its 27th Annual Dickens Festival on Saturday, Dec. 3 on Main Street. Pictured clockwise
from above: Maggie Redington, a 3-year-old resident of Mt. Holly, met Elsa, Olaf and Ana from the Disney
movie, Frozen. The Ridgeway Singers, from left, Kathy Matos, Denise Weintraut and Teresa Seibel performed holiday classics as the community gathered to welcome Santa. Lincoln Jacobus of Marlton plays

arrive.

DEC. 7-13, 2016 THE MEDFORD SUN 17

Session to provide drug information

SESSION
Continued from page 4
Most residents know someone
with a substance use disorder,
and many know someone who
has lost or nearly lost a family
member as a consequence of substance misuse. Yet, at the same
time, few other medical conditions
are
surrounded
by as much shame and misunderstanding as substance use disorders.
To bring local attention and action to these issues, the Township
Councils Neighborhood Services
Advisory Committee, the Medford Municipal Drug Alliance
and the Medford Police Department are hosting a free presentation, Current Trends-Opiates &
Marijuana Extractions, facilitated
by John Kriger of Kriger Consulting.
Newly updated, this highly ac-

claimed session offers an impactful overview the most up-to-date

information available on adolescent behavioral trends, focusing
on the two primary issues facing
parents and professionals today;
opiates and extractions. Learn
the most current information on
these two high-risk behaviors,
and how they are drastically
changing the risk potential for
every family. Discover the risks,
various sources of information
and what every parent and professional is up against.
Here are just a few of the questions to be answered in this program:
1. Why is fentanyl so dangerous?
2. Are those who use these
products at greater risk than in
the past; and if so why?
3. What are Budder, Shatter,
Dab, Flakka and the Deep Web?
4. How are people becoming
addicted to opiates and what are
the risks?
5. What is Narcan and can it

actually protect someone from an

overdose?
These presentations promise
to be one of the most enlightening, edutaining and informative programs participants will
ever benefit from on this topic.
Please plan on attending to get
more information on this crisis
and take advantage of the opportunity to get answers to the questions you have always wanted to
ask.
The presentation will be held
on Wednesday, Dec. 7 from 7:30
p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Medford Public Safety Building, located at 91
Union. Participation is free and
pre-registration is not required.
The session will be live videostreamed via the Medford Township website (http://www.medfordtownship.com/content/233/243/967/default.aspx)
and the video will also be
archived and available for viewing anytime via the same link for
the convenience of those unable
to attend.

Additionally, the Woodford
Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge is encouraging the public to symbolically adopt wildlife for holiday
gifts in a program called Adopt a
Wild One. Community members
can help one of the injured or orphaned animals by symbolically
"adopting" it for a year. The support provides food, medicine, veterinary treatment and lots of tender loving care. Visit the Resident
Wildlife page to see what animals

are adoptable.
The Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge
is also collecting wish list items
for the wildlife this holiday season. It is most in need of paper
towels, no-mess birdseed, green
veggie baby food, latex medical
gloves and rakes.
To show support for the U.S.

David Silver, one of the cofounders and president of the organization, said. By donating,
