Design of load bearing stiffeners:
checking the req of load carrying stiffeners.
Buckling strength of web to be compared
with point load. Buckiling strength of web:
(b1+n1)tw*fcd . B1=0 (as no. of plate is
one). Assuming load has been dispersing on
both side at 45* n1=(2*D)/2 for support it
would be one. Fcd = Design compression
strength based on slenderness ratio Kl/r.
considering area of cross-section of web
here, (b1+n1)tw. Fcd is found from
lamda=Le/gammay. Le = .7d where d =
depth of strut b/w flanges, gammay=
tw/sqrt(12). Table 9(c)-is 800 . the buckling
strength will be less than point load.

Clause 8.7.4 Fw> given point load. Check:
clause 8.7.5.2 Fpsd > Fx. Design of load
bearing stiffners under the point load:
similarly as above. Assume the pair 160*8
mm Check for bearing strength. Design of
connection: Design of weld for load bearing
stiffeners at the support. Assuming size of
weld as 6mm for connecting web plate to lbs
at support. Assuming length of weld=40mm.
strength of weld = .7*6*187.37= Ws. c/c
spacing of weld=((Ws*n)/Vh)*eff length. N
assuming stiffeners on both side for both
stiffeners. Vh=S.F/D.Clear spacing= c/c
spacing-eff length.
The fillet weld will be in the plan of load as
well as moment as shown in figure and
therefore it will be subjected to shear
because of tension as well as vertical shear.
Calculation of bending moment to be
resisted by splice plate: B.M of web plate
*(Iweb plate/ Igross plate). Each plate will be
subjected to B.M.S.P/2 and Shear force also
S.F/2. For calculating size of weld to be
provided for connecting splice plate with the
web plate equate the strength of weld with
the resultant shear. Strength of weld= .
7*S*189.4. Assuming length of weld along
the span for each of the web splice as
400mm. Considering the weld as line weld i.e
thickness is to be considered as unity and
therefore total length of weld= Centroid of
weld x bar=. Taking moment of all areas
about plane AD and calculating Ixx, Iyy, Ip.
Shear due to tension at point shear B= T*r/Ip
where r = distance for point load
hypotaneous T is bending moment. Vertical
shear= S.F/ total area. Resultane shear. From
that equate it with strength of weld and find
thickness(s).
