Audiences of all ages are invited to this years Homelinks theatrical production with two classic plays rolled
into one engaging show: The Secret Garden and The
Reluctant Dragon.
Homelinks students aged five to sixteen are bringing to life these two magical tales. In uniquely different
ways these two stories both speak to the power of coming
together with others and finding ones true voice.
In The Secret Garden (based on Frances Hodgson Burnetts well known story published in 1911) two unhappy
children, Mary and Collin, become transformed through
bringing a secret garden back to life with the help of
Dickon, a boy deeply connected with the natural world.
This charming and hope filled story tells of friendship,
magic and new possibility.
The Reluctant Dragon (original story by Kenneth Grahame, 1898) is a dragon tale with a twist. An erudite and
poetry loving dragon is helped by a friendly family and is
ultimately accepted by the bigger community. In the end,
friendship and love win against fear and suspicion, just as
we hope they do in real life!
Show times are Wednesday, December 7 and Thursday,
December 8 at 4 pm at the Covenant Church, 702 Stanley
Street, Nelson. The show is approximately 1 hour and 40
minutes long and admission is by donation.

Hadwins Judgement
Nelson Film Night Fundraiser
Join your friends in Nelson for a film night fundraiser for the West Kootenay EcoSociety on Wednesday,
December 14 at 7 pm 9 pm at the Nelson Civic Theater,
719 Vernon Street.
A spellbinding account of environmentalism, obsession
and myth, Hadwins Judgement chronicles BC logging
engineer and survivalist Grant Hadwins emotional crusade to alert us all to the egregious devastation wrought
by clear-cutting on the worlds last great temperate rainforest. His journey ends with a shocking, illegal act a
tragic mystery and a prophetic warning.
A short presentation and Q & A will follow the film with
Herb Hammond, who is featured in the film. Herb is a forest ecologist, forester, keynote speaker and award winning
author who developed the process of ecosystem-based
conservation planning, which he has assisted First Nations
and other rural communities to apply across Canada
and elsewhere in the world over the past four decades.

Ready for the holidays? Finding or receiving the ultimate gift may feel great, but helping others is more
rewarding. If youre feeling overwhelmed by all the gift
shopping youll be doing, check out these tips for getting
into the holiday spirit.
Get Social: Tweet, share, pin and like charities
social media posts. This helps them spread awareness about their causes.
Donate To Charity: Forget Black Friday; participate
in Giving Tuesday instead! Created by nonprofits to
promote charitable giving, Giving Tuesday infuses
some altruism into the season. If youre passionate about nature conservation, for instance, you
can donate to the Nature Conservancy of Canada
(NCC) on Giving Tuesday and double your impact
for nature. Copernicus Educational Products will
match every dollar donated, up to $40,000.
Volunteer: Giving your time is often as valuable as
giving money. Sort food at a food bank, serve soup
at a homeless shelter or help tackle invasive species
as a Conservation Volunteer.
Recycle: Want to make room for all those holiday
gifts? Clean out the basement or garage and donate
your old stuff to a clothing bank or thrift store.
Many of them run charitable programming for the
under or unemployed.
Give Food: While cleaning out the garage, clean
out the cupboards too! Food banks always appreciate donations this time of year. Canned beans, peanut butter and baby formula are popular items. Ask
your local food bank about what they need most.

Canada and how you can get involved, please visit www.

working with metal, he was hooked.
Having completed the Metal Fabricator Foundation

way through a metal fabrication apprenticeship at Rosslands Columbia Steel Fabricating & Welding. With an

its always changing and its always different, says Hwalstad. You get different jobs and different drawings, then
you have to build it. Some of it is repetitive like drilling
holes, but you dont do the same thing every day. What
attracted me was making something out of nothing, he
says. You have this pile of steel and you have to make
something out of it.

Metal fabricators build, assemble and repair products made
of steel. The application of the
trade is seen in a wide variety of
manufacturing and construction
industries. Metal fabricators can
work for fabrication and welding shops in the manufacturing
of structural steel, boilers, heavy
machinery and transportation
equipment. The work of a metal
fabricator is often intricate and
requires an individual who pays
attention to precision. Its a Red
Seal designated trade under the
Industry Training Authority
(ITA) which allows individuals to
travel and work all across Canada.
The Metal Fabricator Foundation Program is currently accepting applications for the January
30 intake. The 23-week program
prepares learners for entry level
positions. Students engage in a
variety of classroom and shop
activities where they learn theoGift
