Two Classic Plays In One Show
Audiences of all ages are invited to this years Homelinks theatrical production with two classic plays rolled
into one engaging show: The Secret Garden and The
Reluctant Dragon.
Homelinks students aged five to sixteen are bringing to life these two magical tales. In uniquely different
ways these two stories both speak to the power of coming
together with others and finding ones true voice.
In The Secret Garden (based on Frances Hodgson Burnetts well known story published in 1911) two unhappy
children, Mary and Collin, become transformed through
bringing a secret garden back to life with the help of
Dickon, a boy deeply connected with the natural world.
This charming and hope filled story tells of friendship,
magic and new possibility.
The Reluctant Dragon (original story by Kenneth Grahame, 1898) is a dragon tale with a twist. An erudite and
poetry loving dragon is helped by a friendly family and is
ultimately accepted by the bigger community. In the end,
friendship and love win against fear and suspicion, just as
we hope they do in real life!
Show times are Wednesday, December 7 and Thursday,
December 8 at 4 pm at the Covenant Church, 702 Stanley
Street, Nelson. The show is approximately 1 hour and 40
minutes long and admission is by donation.

As the days become shorter and cooler we know that the

holiday season is just around the corner. At North Kootenay Lake Community Services, we are gearing up for our
annual Food Hub fundraising events. From the following
letter you can see the importance the Kaslo Food Cupboard has on our residents.
I am writing this letter because I wanted to say how
much the Food Hub makes a difference to my family.
We are in a lot of ways a very normal family, mom, dad
and two young children. Dad has had a hard time finding steady work in this small rural town (a lot of jobs are
seasonal) and usually the work he can find is part-time and
doesnt really quite cover everything a family needs.
We do our best to make ends meet but we always seem to
come up just a bit short. It is such a relief to know that I can
go get something good to put in my girls, my familys belly.
And that it will be there next week and the week after. It
helps us keep perspective. Its easier to figure out what you
are going to do next, if you know that you are going to be
okay right now at least.
I know that there are many other families like mine that
depend on the Food Hub too. I cannot imagine what our
town, our community would do without it. I know my
children would not be able to continue to grow healthy and
happily like they are, without it. Food Cupboard Client.

Hub (Tuesdays, 10 am to 1 pm or Thursdays from 5

Annual Conservation
Leadership Awards Presented
Grant Trower receives his award from KCP Chair Derek

Petersen & Heather Leschied accepts her award from KCP
Program Manager Juliet Craig.
The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) awarded
their annual Conservation Leadership Awards as part
of their Annual Gathering in Creston on November 25.
Heather Leschied and Grant Trower were both recipients
of the award, showcasing outstanding leadership qualities
in the field of conservation in this region.
Grant Trower is a conservation leader. He has dedicated himself towards protecting fish, wildlife and their
habitats, particularly in the Meadow Creek area. He has
held positions as the former coordinator of the Friends of
the Lardeau, a long-term board member for the Fish and
Wildlife Compensation Program Columbia and current
coordinator of Wildlife Habitats for Tomorrow. He has
worked tirelessly to gain Protected Area status within the
Lardeau area and has given his time freely for fish, wildlife
and habitat in the Columbia Basin. He has received recognition by the Land Conservancy for his efforts around
land protection.
Heather Leschied is a champion of conservation in the
Kootenays. Her passion, knowledge and ability to communicate have enabled her to move ideas into action and
create a stronger culture of conservation both within and
beyond our region. She has been involved in water stewardship and citizen science initiatives in the Columbia
Basin for over a decade. She is chair of the East Kootenay Integrated Lake Management Partnership and Kootenay Lake Partnership; a founding director of the Lake
Windermere Ambassadors and Friends of Kootenay
Lake; director for the BC Lake Stewardship Society; and
serves on the Columbia Basin Trust Environment Advisory Committee and Kootenay Lake Local Conservation
Fund Technical Review Committee. She was instrumental in the launch of Living Lakes Canada in 2010, which
has now expanded her work to the Mackenzie River and
Lake Winnipeg watersheds. Her work has won awards by
government and industry, and has influenced the management of water bodies in the Kootenays.

For many people, getting the flu can be inconvenient,

yet tolerable. You feel sick for a week or so, maybe stay
home to rest and then return to your old self after the illness passes. But for others, the flu can cause serious problems that could lead to hospitalization or even death.
It can affect everyone, including those who are healthy.
The flu is very contagious and can spread quickly and easily through coughing, sneezing and touching common
surfaces.
With the spread of the flu, there can be a risk of serious
complications for vulnerable groups, particularly:
Young children
Adults aged 65 and over
Pregnant women and newborns up to six months
People with a chronic health condition
To protect high risk family
members and friends, as well as
others with whom we come in
contact, everyone over the age
of six months should get the flu
vaccine. In particular, the following people should ensure they
are vaccinated as early in flu season as possible.
Those in close contact with
individuals at high risk for
complications (e.g., childcare
workers, health care workers,
home-care workers, family and
close contacts)
Personnel who provide services within closed or relatively
closed environments with individuals at high risk (e.g., flight
attendants, cruise ship employees, teachers)

2 For 1 Tuesday Comes To

The West Kootenay
Every Tuesday in December will be a 2 for 1 Tuesday

in the West Kootenay. On these days, all transit passengers who bring a travel buddy on board will pay only one
fare. All fare products will be accepted, including cash and
monthly passes, for the 2 for 1 program.
BC Transit is proud to be partnering with the Regional
District of Kootenay Boundary, the Regional District
Central Kootenay and the City of Nelson to support this
initiative, which makes it even easier for locals to use
environmentally-friendly public transportation.
The West Kootenay as a region has already experienced
exceptional growth in transit usage. In 2015/2016, ridership increased across all three transit systems, including
10% in Nelson, 7% in Kootenay Boundary and 8% in Kootenay Lake West. This promotion will only support further growth moving forward.

A Partnership To Help
Young Entrepreneurs
Community Futures Junior Dragons Den and JA British Columbia are teaming up to help young entrepreneurs
in the Kootenays. Students throughout the region who are
enrolled in JABCs Be Entrepreneurial program now have
a competitive advantage when preparing to enter Junior
Dragons Den, a Columbia Basin-wide initiative where
qualifying young entrepreneurs pitch their business idea
to a panel of judges, in a live show format.
The Be Entrepreneurial program is one of the many
classroom-based learning programs available to students
through JA British Columbia, stated Don Freschi, GM
at Community Futures in Trail. It covers everything
from finance to product development and is the perfect
four hour prep course for students when preparing their
business concept pitch for a chance to compete, added
Freschi.
At JABC we believe in the power of partnership, and
we are very pleased to be partnering with Community
Futures(CF) to give young people in the Columbia Basin
area the benefits of both Be Entrepreneurial and CFs,
Junior Dragons Den competition, said Jason Ranchoux,
regional manager, Interior.
Modelled after CBCs The Dragons Den, Junior Dragons Den, which started as a West Kootenay-Boundary
student business competition three years ago, expanded
throughout the Kootenays in the fall of 2015.
Led by Community Futures, Junior Dragons Den is
open to students from grades seven through to post secondary with regional competitions taking place in Nelson
on April 20, 2017 and in Cranbrook on April 24, 2017.
The winners from each respective competition will automatically advance to compete in the Junior Dragons Den
championship which will be held on May 6, 2017 at the
Bailey Theatre in Trail.
Submissions are evaluated based on finances, marketability, the product or service idea and the plan presented.
Registration for Junior Dragons Den is now open and
applications can be accessed via www.juniordragonsden.
com
