Configure and Start NPO Client Application

This section describes how to install an NPO Client.

1 Initial Checks and Configuration

All the installation tasks (i.e. Windows OS installation, Java installation) must be performed using the
Administrator user.
If other users are created, they must be part of the Administrator group, and all the configuration tasks must be
performed for all the users.

1.1

Install/Configure Operating System

A clean installation of Microsoft Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7 operating system is

recommended in order to avoid conflicts between already installed applications and the applications
needed to run the Icon Box application.
Additional information on Windows XP Professional/Windows Vista/Windows 7 installation tasks can be found on
the http://www.microsoft.com/ Internet site.
The operating system must be Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista or Windows
7.
Perform a clean installation of the Operating System. This ensures that no conflicts appear during installation:
Create only one disk partition (C:) or ensure that the C: partition has at least 40 GB. The C: partition must
be in NTFS format type.
Create only the Administrator user and make sure it has a password. If other users are needed, they
must be part of the Administrator group and all the configuration tasks must be performed for all these
users.
For Windows XP, it is mandatory to have the Service Pack 2 installed. If Windows XP Professional is
delivered without Service Pack 2, download it from http://www.microsoft.com/ Internet site and install it.
Machines with a preinstalled Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista or Windows 7 can also
be used but with the following constraints:
Only the Operating System must be installed (no other applications that consume resources can be
present)
Java is not installed.
Only the Java delivered with NPO application needs to be installed, otherwise unexpected abnormal behavior
may occur for NPO applications.
In case the existing Java is removed, after the removal check if C:\Documents and Settings\<windows
login>Application Data\Sun\Java\ directory is deleted. If still exists, it must be removed manually. This
directory shall be removed for all the users declared/created in Windows. Here <windows login> is the current
user name.
