Here at Firelands we participate annually in two

offerings for the PC (USA). One is the One Great Hour
of Sharing collected during Lent, and the other is the
Christmas Joy Offering collected during Advent.
Because of our generous support of the Christmas Joy
Offering, church workers have received aid in their time
of need, and students of Presbyterian-related racial
ethnic schools and colleges have been afforded
opportunities to learn, grow, and lead in their faith.
Christmas Joy envelopes will be included with the
Sunday bulletins and your offering can be placed in the
offering tray or turned into the church office anytime
throughout December. Please read the bulletin inserts
for more information about the Christmas Joy Offering
and give generously.

Service of the
Longest Night
December 21
Christmas can be a
painful time for some. It
may be the first
Christmas without a loved
family member who has
recently died; it may be a
time that has always
been difficult.
The constant refrain on the radio and television, in
shopping malls and churches, about the happiness of
the season, about getting together with family and
friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or
have never had. The anguish of broken relationships,
the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill
health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel
very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending.
We need the space and time to acknowledge our
sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not
alone.
Our spirits sink, as the days grow shorter. We feel the
darkness growing deeper around us. We need
encouragement to live the days ahead of us.
For these reasons, Firelands Presbyterian Church offers
a special Longest Night service on December 21 at
7:30 PM
Come out, and join with us in sharing and hearing
prayers, scripture, and music that acknowledge that
Gods presence is for those who mourn, for those who
struggle - and that Gods Word comes to shine light into
our darkness. Everyone, regardless of church
background is welcome.
The service will be held at Firelands Presbyterian
Church, 2626 E. Harbor Rd. with the Port Clinton
Ministerial Association assisting.

Thank you
Thank You for all the prayers, inquiries and kind
thoughts - each day is a bit better than the
last. Firelands friends are the greatest.
Blessings to all. .

Bistro 163
Community
Meal
December 12
BISTRO 163 is hosting a
free public dinner
on Monday, December
12, at 1848 E Perry
Street in Port Clinton.
Serving hours are from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.
This is a free public dinner, open to all neighbors. Chef

Stacy and our volunteers will be serving up a

delicious meal. See you there! Firelands Folk will be
providing the musical entertainment.

Bistro 163 is in the News!

The Toledo TV ABC affiliate visited Bistro 163 in
November, and aired a four minute evening news
segment on November 10th. The next day saw a record
number of diners served by our volunteers 83 people
in only three hours!
In the mail on November 23rd arrived an official
proclamation from our elected State Representative,
Steven Arndt, congratulating Bistro 163 on being named
Best New Business and Best Non Profit by vote of
readers of The Beacon Newspaper. The proclamation
goes on to say:
These prestigious honors are a fitting tribute to
Bistro 163, for its staff has consistently
demonstrated professionalism and expertise, as
well as a commitment to maintaining the highest
quality standards. Due to the exemplary effort
and initiative exhibited by the employees, the
enterprise has attained a tremendous record of
service to the community, and its success is
worthy of admiration. The accomplishments of
Bistro 163 are a justifiable source of pride and
an outstanding reflection not only on the
business itself, but also on its astute
management, on its dedicated employees, and
on the community.
And theres more! The Port Clinton News Journal
published a front page article on November 25th,
featuring the Bistro 163 After School Snack and Study
program for school age children. The Bistro is open
every Wednesday from 3:00 5:00 PM, offering help
with homework and a nourishing snack. The reporter
highlighted Chef Stacys nutritious snack, our volunteers
(who include Kay McIntosh, Joyce Jagucki, Karen Coffin,
Jean Witkowski), the Bistro Kids, and our anonymous

donors who paid if forward for an entire winter of

Wednesdays.
The fourth free community meal at Bistro 163 took place
on Monday, November 14thth. Chef Stacy Maple pulled
out all the stops, preparing a complete early
Thanksgiving dinner of roast turkey, stuffing, mashed
potatoes and gravy, green beans and bread pudding.
More than 150 guests were served at long community
tables from 5:00 7:00. A number of diners came
because of our promotion to community agencies, food
banks, and subsidized housing. Many generous
neighbors also attended and made donations. The
Firelands folk musicians entertained in the building
lobby, with a mixture of requests, hymns, and standards
Our corps of volunteers continues to grow, representing
a number of local organizations and churches. More
volunteers are always needed, whether you can
volunteer one day a week or one day a month! Please
call the Bistro at 419.734.9887, or send an email
message to volunteer@bistro163.org, if you would like
to give some time serving your community and
addressing hunger at Bistro 163.

Now I Lay Me
Down to Sleep
will benefit from
Gift of Lights
Last year the best-decorated
Christmas tree at Adams
Street Park in downtown Port
Clinton was won by the Oliver
H. Perry Masonic Lodge. That
gave them the honor of
selecting which charitable
organization would receive
this years monies. All monies raised from the Gift of
Lights this year will be donated to the Now I Lay Me
Down to Sleep Mission of Firelands Presbyterian Church.
Thank You to Wayne Walter, a member of the Masonic
Lodge, for suggesting Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.

Preschool News
November is one of our favorite months of
the Preschool Year! Not only did we learned about Fall
Harvest, Turkeys, Thanksgiving and Gingerbread, we
also had our very own Presidential Election, a Pajama
Party, an Ohio State/Michigan Party, and a Thanksgiving
Feast!!
For the first week of the month we talked about Fall
Harvest! We got out all of our farm toys and tractors.
The kids loved playing with tractors in the sensory bin,
which was filled with sunflower seeds and popcorn
kernels. We read books about harvest time and made
some fun crafts. One of their favorites was reading
There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves
and then making scarecrows with their faces on them.
During Turkey week we read silly books about turkeys,
made turkey crafts, and learned about the different
parts of the turkey. All of our centers were turkey
themed- counting feathers, cutting feathers, turkey
writing and tracing, turkey coloring and lots of other
"turkey business." The kids love dancing to Any Turkey
Can Tango by Silly Sally!
During Thanksgiving week we learned about The
Mayflower, Pilgrims, Native Americans and what it
means to be thankful. The students were thankful for a
variety of things, including their families, toys, food, and
friends!
We ended the month a unit on Gingerbread. We read a
different versions of The Gingerbread Man and talked
about how they were the dame and different. We made
gingerbread crafts- including "gingerbread" ornaments.
We even had a visit from the Gingerbread Man! He sent
us on a hunt around the building and left us a special
treat!
And of course during all of this fun, we learned all about
the letters T, I, P, and N! The children learn the name
and sound the letters make. They build the letters with
wooden sticks and practice writing them on papers and
dry erase paddles. We also color the letters and pictures
of things that being with that letter.
Thank you to the parents and students that attended
our Family Reading Night! We hope you enjoyed the
snacks and story time with Mrs. Winkie!
As November winds down and
December is upon us, we will be
spending lots of time getting ready for
our Christmas Program.

Preschool Christmas Program

Our preschool will have their annual Christmas Program Thursday
December 15th at 6 pm. It is a delightful evening and you are invited to
attend. Children sing, present the Christmas Story and are treated to a
visit from Santa.
Our congregation will be helping with the reception following the program.
We could use donations of cookies (do not have to be home baked) and a
few willing folks to assist with the reception.
A sign-up sheet for cookies is on the opportunity table. If you would like to assist the evening of the program, please
call Marilyn Umlauf 419/798-8812.
Thank you in advance from the Mission Committee

Help Wanted: Food Pantry

Volunteers Needed
John and Kay McIntosh are looking for Friday substitute
Food Pantry Volunteers for the last two weeks in
December as well as the months of Jan, Feb and March.
How to help: on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning,
call the office of Transitional Housing (419) 734-9494 in
Sutton Center to see if any families have asked for food.
If needed, on Friday morning shop for fresh food items
at Bassetts and pack bags of non perishable staples
from our food pantry. When the food is collected, call
Transitional Housing to let them know you are on the
way. The food is then delivered to Sutton Center to the
side entrance (take out door for the Bistro 163 kitchen).
Please call the church office or Kay McIntosh 440-7251546 to offer to help for any or all of these months.

An additional way to help from

our food pantry:
When it is your day to help in our food pantry and when
you call or speak to Heather or Sandy at Transitional
Housing (419) 734-9494, ask if they need any additional
bags of emergency staples. If they say yes, pack bags of
non perishable items for a family of two from our food
pantry and bring to the side entrance of Sutton Center
after notifying the Transitional Housing office that you
are on your way. These bags of food and other
necessities will be helpful when they get calls for help
and food is urgently needed.

Pastors Page

I enjoy writing newsletter articles. That actually surprises me, because it seems I always have a difficult time coming
up with something to write about. That leads to some stress and even guilt on my part because I have read that more
people read the pastors newsletter article than anything else he/she writes or says. Even so, once I get that big
decision out of the way, I do enjoy the process. I cant wait to see whats going to come out.
The December newsletter article may be the hardest one of all for me. That may seem strange, because, well, what
else is there to write about except Christmas? Is there anything new and unique to say about Christmas? Hasnt
everything already been said at least eight or nine hundred times? Lets face it. Once weve come up with the Smurf
Christmas Special, were officially out of ideas for Christmas.
Maybe, if I gave myself permission, I could say something about Christmas that was new and unique for a church
newsletter article. Such as, forget about it. Forget about celebrating Christmas this year. Dont buy the presents and
put up the tree and do all the things that our culture forces us to do this time of year. We know all the usual trappings
of Christmas have almost nothing to do with the birth of Christ. The holiday has moved on beyond things like mangers
and miraculous stars and so forth. So, is it any surprise that its become Happy Holidays instead of Merry
Christmas? Maybe we as Christians ought to just refuse to be a part of all the commercialism and retreat into our
homes and churches and observe Advent and celebrate the birth of the Christ child in the ways we know how. And
lets not even try to create guilt in others by reminding them Jesus is the reason for the season because, honestly, it
was a secular holiday (celebration of the winter solstice) before it was a celebration of Jesus birth. We hijacked it,
obviously not too well. So, let the malls do their thing and well do ours.
Im not really going to make that suggestion. Christmas as it is celebrated is fun, and Im not going to bah-humbug
fun. Fun is good. I like fun. The important thing is for Christians to resist the temptation to make it all about fancy
trees and alcoholic reindeer with their red noses. We, of all people, need to make sure that we make this season
about the coming of Christ, giving gifts out of love, not obligation, and singing Joy to the World! with all our hearts.
Im not even going to decry the commercialization of Christmas. I have this crazy idea that in a secular age like ours
Christmas may be what saves Christianity. The story is told of a young boy who visited the Grand Canyon. He looked
at the vastness of the canyon for a minute and said, Something big must have happened here. Perhaps someday
somebody will look at all the hoopla around Christmas, all the lights and all the hurry and bustle, all the songs of
Have a holly, jolly Christmas, and Rockin around the Christmas tree, and think, Something big must have
happened here.

STATED SESSION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS November 8, 2016

Pastor Mark Cooper opened the meeting with prayer.
Report of the Clerk: Dave Moore, Clerk of Session
A motion was approved to authorize Pastor Mark to provide home communion with an elder, deacon or trained others
to accompany the pastor, as possible.
Treasurers Report: Darrell Brand, Treasurer:
Total GF Income YTD of $110,317.88 minus Total GF YTD Expense of $119,423.64 results in a loss of $9,105.76
for YTD 2016. The budget projected a loss of $10,807.42 YTD October 2016, but the actual loss is $1,701.66 less than
projected. This is a large improvement of the numbers we were looking at the end of August 2016. We must
remember that the budget called for a deficit for 2016 and at this time the actual vs. budget is positive. This is
accounted for in that income is more than budgeted and expenses are more than budgeted, but the difference is
positive. Our extra expenses for our waterline fix and the furnace repair were not in the 2016 budget. Hopefully we
can continue these positive numbers thru November and December.
The Preschool YTD income of $69,972.10 minus Total YTD expenses of $69,213.08 results in a gain of $759.02 YTD
October 2016. The YTD income is $1,724.40 less than budgeted and the YTD expenses are $1,882.92 less than
budgeted. The net income YTD is $158.52 more than budgeted.
COMMITTEE

REPORTS

Christian Education/Spiritual Nurture & Preschool: Karen Coffin, Chair Sunday School led by Ernie
McCullough and Wednesday Bible Study at the Magruder Hospital Caf led by Pastor Mark continue with loyal
followers. Newcomers always welcome.
We are working with Kay McIntosh to set up a workshop titled An Introduction to Christian Listening to be led by
David and Carol Ball. Carols recent sermon as our guest preacher sparked an interest in this concept.
The Preschool committee, consisting of Marsha Bordner, Karen Vardyan, Bill Sharp, Cole Hatfield and Rachel Johnson
met to discuss issues relating to our very successful program. All reports were positive and the projected budget looks
stable. Miss Rachel serves as both Director and Head Teacher, which allows us to maintain an affordable fee structure
for the schools operation. We owe her a big thanks for being willing to do both jobs in such an outstanding manner.
Financial Stewardship : Bill Sharp Hopefully, a successful Stewardship Campaign Drive for our 2017
administrative year will result in our presenting a strong and meaningful budget for Sessions approval. A budget
which will have a zero balance, will have the necessary financial means to support our church life, allow our continued
mission efforts and ultimately demonstrate our fiduciary responsibility.
Pledge cards were dedicated on Sunday, November 20th. However, anyone who has pledges may still be turned in
for inclusion in the December 7th budget planning.
All members and congregants are encouraged always to talk to any of the Financial Stewardship committee memberswe see this as a good sign of your concern and interest.
Mission: Karen Vardyan, Chair Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, as of Nov.8, has given beds & bedding to over 90
children since this mission began in the summer of 2015. The winner of the community Christmas Tree Decorating
Contest, at Wayne Walters suggestion, gave the money collected during the voting to our bed mission. We have
applied for a grant from the Portage Resale Center and will hear the results in December.
We are making plans for the Advent and Christmas seasons by collecting toys, coats and filling the Mitten Tree for the
Salvation Army; and paper towels, toilet paper and tissue for Holiday Bureau. Our Christmas Joy Offering will be held
in December.
Outreach: Mary Caracci The highest entries on our Facebook page this month were:
Yoga & Potluck Lunch 70; Sunday School New Hours 68; Preschool pizza kits 110;
Musical Arts Series Steve & Lisa Ball 96; Darrell Brand & PC Lighthouse 125;
Steven Keizer Presbyterian Foundation 131
Our web site, www.firelandschurch.org, was consulted by 102 persons with 74% first-time viewers.
Bistro163s Chef Stacy Maple planned a full chili supper on September 12 th. Volunteers from the 7th grade Girl Scout
Troop at PC Middle School and the youth group from St. Joseph Church in Marblehead helped serve. More than 130
guests were fed.

A number of diners came because of our promotions to community agencies, food banks and subsidized housing.
Many generous neighbors attended and made donations.
The Firelands Folk provided a musical mixture of requests, hymns & standards. Our third free community meal will be
Monday, November 14th. All neighbors are welcome!
Bistro 163 is serving lunch to families & individuals referred by Transitional Housing, United Way, Salvation Army, Red
Cross and several local food pantries. Vouchers for a complimentary meal have been given to the Grau family, whose
home across from the church was recently destroyed. We have provided volunteer opportunities to individuals
performing court-ordered community service, a Habitat for Humanity obligation and those volunteering in return for
their meal. This is truly a community food ministry.
Every Wednesday afternoon, Bistro 163 is now offering After School Snack and Study from 3 to 5 p.m. for school
age children to help with homework and a nourishing snack. To help in the after-school program - call 419-734-9887.
Volunteers who can serve in the Bistro tell us at www.volunteer@bistro163.org
Worship and Music: Kay McIntosh, Chair The Firelands Folk played in September and October for the Bistro free
community meals and for a community dinner at St. Thomas Church in September. They played for our October 2nd
worship prior to the Annual Meeting. They will also play for the Bistros November community dinner and are
preparing a program of Christmas music at play at Edgewood Manor in December.
Members of our committee and Firelands Folk participated in the memorial services for Doug Falls and Margaret Mann.
A big Thank You to Sally & Dave Wahlers for creating the fall dcor in the sanctuary.
Communion was taken to member Tom Gahris and his roommate Charlie Albertson at Edgewood in September. We
will take communion to them again in November.
Supply Pastors in October were David Hawley, Carol Ball and Judy Frank.
A community Thanksgiving Service will be held on Monday, November 21 st at St. Johns Lutheran Church in
downtown Port Clinton.
We will decorate the church for Advent on Wednesday, November 30th. Deadline to order and pay for poinsettias to
give in honor of loved ones is December 4th.
The Advent Choir led by Kay McIntosh and Susan Larcey will lead worship services on Sundays, December 4, 11 and
18. Choir rehearsals are at 7:30 on Thursdays, Nov.17 and December 1, 8, and 15. All singers are welcome to join us
to share in this holy season. Our Advent worship will culminate in our candlelight service with special music on
Christmas Eve, Saturday, December, 24th.
Sally Wahlers is preparing the Advent wreath for the first lighting on Sunday, November 27th. Pease sign up on the
opportunity table to take part in this ceremony. Nila McCullough will be shepherding the families and friends
participating in this tradition.
The Service of the Longest Night is being planned for Wednesday, December 21st at 7:30 p.m. at our church with
clergy from other Port Clinton churches participating. Alison Falls, Marilyn Umlauf, Kay McIntosh and Connie Brand will
help plan; Pastor Mark will give the homily; Sally Wahlers will coordinate the candle lighting & dcor.
Audio Visual Committee to form Pastor Mark will meet with Wayne Walter, Jack Combs, John McIntosh and possibly
John Rogers to plan a multi- media service for December 4th.
Property Management: John Pugh, Chair We will be receiving a new freezer sometime in November. Some paint
touch-up on the church exterior has been completed which should get us through the winter until we can do thorough
re-painting in the spring.
Committee: Ed Bettendorf was elected as the new Clerk of Session to replace outgoing Elder Dave Moore. New
Officer Induction can possibly take place on December 11th. Administrative Assistant Janine Dress will confirm this
date.
The next meeting of Maumee Valley Presbytery is on November 15 th at the First Presbyterian Church in Bowling
Green.
Pastor Mark closed the meeting with prayer. Next meeting is December 13, 2016.
